F No Sexist Costumes

@fucknosexistcostumes / fucknosexistcostumes.tumblr.com

This blog is not about shaming women who choose to wear these costumes. This blog is simply pointing out the extreme differences in costumes aimed at women and costumes aimed at men.Costume ComparisonsChildren's Costumes

Went to party city today, notice how it’s not even “sexy nurse” yet they give her thigh high fishnets and a short ass dress. Burglar (m) is in a wool sweater and jeans and the woman is in a full body latex suit???

The absolutely inexistent effort to think critically about this of the people going “if the stores sell this it is because women want them”.

Maybe the market has created that need because, shocking, the market befits from sexism? Just like it did gendering boys/girls toys? And hygene products, and stationary, and literally everything else it possibly can?

Maybe the fact that something sexist is done to make money doesn’t stop it from being sexist? Maybe the suggestion that the aim of it being making money somehow validates the oppression it’s perpetuating is a horrible take?

And why? why do women even “want” them, to begin with? Have you thought about it? Because you might wonder as well why do women systematically submit to pain and discomfort, why do they “want” to be cold and unfortable, why do they “want” to wax their body hair, why do they “want” to lay under a scalpel and needles and pay surgeons to cut them up and sew them back together, just to conform to what we’ve been taught since we were toddlers that was expected of us (and the demands keep getting more and more unattainable and insidious as we grow up).

There’s a lot of things we “want” we don’t genuinely want, we’ve been taught to want the social reward and the validation that comes with the sacrifice, but it is a sacrifice. And most women don’t even want to analyse that, because admitting you’re not 100% the ruler of your own brain and actions is frustrating, and painful, and shameful, specially in a society under a sudden trend of valuing “women’s empowerment” (women’s empowerment to freely choose to submit to patriarchal norms and be fuckable 24/7, yay!). Cause it makes you feel like YOU are weak, YOU are not empowered enough, it’s YOUR individual problem if you feel pressured.

“Women do that because women want it” is a weak ass argument that deliberately presents women as living in a bubble where their actions and decisions are solely their own and not affected by their context, which is a heteropatriarchal and capitalist society that impregnates everything.

It’s a fucking Halloween costume, I couldn’t care less about it, we don’t even celebrate Halloween were I’m from, and I’m sure people can find other costumes elsewhere. But it’s the constant ridiculing and minimizing of people (specially women) who denounce things that are wrong, or prejudiced, or oppressive (specially when it’s sexism) in a site that prides itself on being mostly “woke”, that kills me.

Most donated clothes won’t be sold in your local charity shop, they will be wasted. You might think that giving your old clothes to charity guarantees that they’ll go to a better home, that the charity will make money because of your kind donations, and that your pieces will live a long life for years to come in someone else’s closet. Nope. In fact, only 10-20% of clothing that is donated to charity ends up getting sold in local shops. The rest is often sold to foreign buyers, who import and resell in their countries. If we’re taking the sustainability angle here, this is not the eco-friendly option, as your clothes are shipped halfway round the globe and cause some serious carbon emissions on the way. But beyond that, a lot of other countries don’t want our used clothes any more. That’s because we’re buying so much low quality fast fashion, which means the quality is literally too low to resell, and these items are classified as ‘junk’. And you know what they do with those clothes? They get incinerated. So yeah, sure. If you donate something really amazing, like a designer or really high quality piece, it will probably be sold on in a charity shop and live a happy life in someone else’s wardrobe. But if you’re donating your high street purchases they’re probably going to be shipped abroad or burned, neither of which are great. Basically, regularly donating huge amounts of high street clothes after a few wears does almost nothing to help the environment.

(submission) I was on amazon and I thought “Oh! I wonder if I could find a Thomas Gage costume here!” I could not find one (no surprise, he’s not exactly a classic Halloween costume), but the recommendation came up for generic red coat costumes so I looked at that. Let👏🏻me👏🏻tell👏🏻you👏🏻 Adult costume: not fun and very much male targeted. Kids costume: the most fun but it’s a kid costume so… Women’s costume: THAT. Not only is the women’s costume THAT, but I also noticed that the kids’ costume is modeled for boys and I couldn’t find a red coat costume for kids that did have a girl model.

There’s a “Sexy” Handmaid’s Tale costume. The description of the costume: "An upsetting dystopian future has emerged where women no longer have a say. However, we say be bold and speak your mind in this exclusive Brave Red Maiden costume featuring a red mini dress, a matching cloak with an attached hood, and a white bonnet headpiece."

i used to be in the antifeminist community (i know, ew) and they would always say like, "oh there's nothing stopping women from wearing the men's costumes." and that still frustrates me today bc 1. "men's" costumes generally don't fit the same as "women's" costumes, and 2. even if they did, you shouldn't *have* to buy costumes meant for dudes in order to cover your titties!! damn!!!

Fat shaming halloween costumes The last one is called “Freshman 15″, a quote from the website: “Great for parties and any time you want to pay homage to another girl that falls victim to the inevitable alcohol calorie gain”

Here’s Proof That Tween Girl Halloween Costumes Are Way Too Sexed-Up [x]

This is starting to worry me.

Don’t forget that these are Tweens. They aren’t teens or adults. They’re 9-12 year olds. These are kids that are still in elementary school. A good majority of them haven’t even hit puberty yet. If that doesn’t bother you, There’s a problem.

This is gross

so gross. so scary.

I didn't take a picture, but while I was finding stuff to make a costume, I found a super revealing maid costume in the teen section. Because, you know, every 13 year old wants to be a sexy maid. I obviously passed on that and got a hot dog hat.

That reminds me of this…
