"what is it, sweetheart?" he doesn't even look up at you when he says it, mind still utterly consumed by the report he was already reading when he walked through the door. he's sitting on the bed, tie half untied, shoes tidy by the entrance but socks still on. you squirm from your spot by the door.
"no work in the bedroom, right?" your words are quiet, cautious, not wanting to come across as a brat. you pick at your fingernail when he looks up and meets your eyes. "t-that's what you said."
it's like your voice has the immediate effect of making the tension in his body seep away. his shoulders relax and the little crease between his eyebrows smooths out.
he places the report in the drawer and shuts it before all his attention is back on you. "you're right. I did say that."
"can I—" his brow twitches, waiting for you to continue as his hands finish the job of taking off his tie and then unbuttoning his cuffs. you flush, "can I sit on your lap?"
soon enough you're sliding into your rightful place, face finding familiar refuge in the crook of his neck. you breath each other in, arms tight around the other's frame, hearts meeting in the middle. "missed you. missed you so much"
you don't know if it's you or him that says it, it's probably both, but one thing you know for sure is that you both mean it :')
