“I thought as much, Cap,” Coulson responded to his unspoken refusal, “it’s not up to me to change your mind, here,” at least the man had the decency not to try and talk him into agreeing, “but, I’m going to level with you here, others will pressure you to sign up for one.”

Steve simply continued to stare, impassively, at the agent. Waiting him out, hoping that his silence would encourage Coulson to continue to speak much as it had back during that first Quinjet ride together to the Helicarrier right before Loki released the Chitauri. Steve’s always known the power of a well-placed silence. And just like before, it worked for him again.

“You have to suspect; you must know, that they won’t let you go without a fight.”

“I think you mean, Agent Coulson, that they won’t let the serum go without a fight.” Steve corrected him and was perversely satisfied to see the beta man blush at that.

Tony slams himself against the wall after he passes the corner, hands smacking roughly against the surface. Hopeless. They can scent him out wherever he is anyway, but he needs to catch his breath—catch his mind. There was a way out of this, but maybe he had passed it on the highway of this misadventure long since past.

The elevator opens and Tony holds back a keen. It’s one or both of them, their footsteps solid on the concrete, and he doesn’t know which he wants to escape more. He scents the air, and both of their unique smells fill his nostrils.
