“There is a copy of the NES game Golf in the firmware of every Switch system”

Me: Oh haha, what a weird thing, probably some remnant from the debugging process -

“Since that was a game that Satoru Iwata programmed himself, this could have been intended as a way of saying that Iwata is spiritually a part of every Switch and is watching over and protecting every system.”

Me:

On July 11th*, the date of Iwata’s passing, doing Iwata’s “directly to you” motion with the Joy-Cons on the home screen will play a sound clip of Iwata and launch the game.

(* Before you try this yourself, note that simply changing the date on your system will not work, as this runs off the Switch’s internal internet-synced clock, meaning that changing the date manually will only work if the system has never been connected to the internet)

I… I can’t…

There are a number of people out there whose graves I wanna put roses and tobacco on.

I need to keep a list.

I just found out about this man, Hugh Thompson

He essentially halted the rape and murder orgy by American soldiers at the village of My Lai in Viet Nam during the Vietnam War by placing his chopper between the civilians and his own soldiers and telling them he’d mow their asses down if they continued the onslaught. He then flew the survivors to military hospitals for care. At least 500 Vietnamese non-combatants were brutally murdered at My Lai by US soldiers before Thompson intervened.

He was vilified by the Army and many of the American people for publicly exposing the Army’s actions at My Lai, and spent the rest of his life with ptsd, alcoholism, and severe nightmare disorder that contributed to his divorce. In other words, his own life was basically ruined by his heroic compassion. He died about 12 years ago at the age of 62 of cancer, and is buried in Lafayette, Louisiana, with full military honors.

He should be remembered.

Is there any hatred stronger than the rage kids get towards Barney the dinosaur as soon as they are just a little too old for Barney the dinosaur

So, this guy, Martin Pistorius, fell into a coma when he was 12 years old and eventually awoke completely paralyzed, at least physically. He was misdiagnosed. Doctors believed he was in a completely vegetative state, but in reality, he had regained full consciousness and awareness. He just didn’t possess any motor function, so he couldn’t communicate to anyone that he was alive in there. He lived this way for 12 years before he overcame it by sheer force of will and was given the tools to communicate. He tells his story in his book, Ghost Boy. Since then he’s also been the subject of the first episode of Invisibilia on NPR and had his own TedTalk.

Anyway, the breaking point that incited his plan of escape was being forced to watch Barney reruns all day, everyday at his care center. Sitting in front of the TV, he learned to tell the time by the shadows on the wall. If he had time he could know when Barney would end. With the ability to measure his days, he was able to pull himself out of the void and ultimately start down the path to recovery. Today, Martin can communicate whatever he wants with the help of a computer program, but there’s one thing he can’t articulate: “I cannot even express to you how much I hated Barney.”

So it turns out that the primal hatred people have toward Barney is strong enough to pull a disembodied consciousness out of the abyss of existential despair and into the physical world out of pure spite

Yoko Taro’s (NieR Automata Director) Favorite PS4 Games:

  • RESOGUN - I always keep an eye out on the games that Housemarque senpai creates, but the playability of their game that hits the spot as a shooting game, and the way the graphical effects are flashy but not gaudy is striking.
  • Final Fantasy XV - I was thinking “oh man, Versus is an action RPG right? It would suck if the release dates were close to each other.” Looking back, I feel like I was trapped by the curse of Versus for about 10 years. This game and its content created over the course of 10 years is unparalleled and unique, and I enjoyed it a lot.
  • Horizon Zero Dawn - I was stunned that a world filled with such imagination like this title would be created. By the way, the release date of this game was only one week apart from NieR: Automata, the game I created. I thought I was going to die. Well, I did die. (I just noticed that I keep on talking about release dates…)
  • Gravity Rush - I feel like recent Western titles are polarized into super AAA titles and indie games, but the Gravity Rush series is a game right around the middle of the two. By the way, I go out to drink with the director Keiichiro Toyama once in a while but the only image I have of him is him being drunk, and I can’t help but think “how can a title like this come from a person like him?”
  • Danganronpa - I go out to drink with the scenario writer Kazutaka Kodata once in a while too, but when I saw his piercing eyes that appear as though he doesn’t trust anyone around him, I thought “ah, he does seem like the person that would create a mad game like Danganronpa…”
  • Life is Strange - The direction is completely different! This surprise was how I met Life is Strange. In sharp contrast to Remember Me, this title is about life in school in a quiet city. By the way, Remember Me is still not localized into Japanese, when is it going to be localized?
  • The Last Guardian - I’ve waited seven years. Seven. This is a game that I ended up feeling happy to have been able to play while I was still alive.

you sure spend alot of time thinking about kids on tumblr

This is factually untrue. I spend a lot of time thinking about porn and ways I’d kill myself.

I was thinking of this curious habit we humans have of demonizing and dehumanizing people we don’t like. It’s kind of a No True Scotsman deal where we just systematically decide this group of people is no longer the same thinking, feeling human being as I am.

It’s not even just with things like racism (although don’t get me wrong, racism is horrible), this is an antifa thing. This is a “Let’s kill all the goat-f*ckers” thing. This is a “What that person did was so bad they can’t possibly be a person” thing. It is, for lack of a better word, illogical.

There’s footage of Adolf Hitler telling jokes and petting kittens and people are genuinely surprised to see and know this, as if he was some kind of alien who orchestrated a genocide. They can’t even seem to process that a real, flesh-and-blood human was behind those horrors and he did normal mundane people things just like you and I. We’d all want to distance ourselves from someone like him, and maybe that’s understandable, but it’s also a bit….self-righteous.

Much as we’d all like to think “real” people would Never Do Really Bad Things, everyone is capable of it to some extent. If you’d been brought up in a different environment, raised by different parents, experienced different things in life, lived in a different time, you would likely be very different from who you are today. You may be better, you may be far worse. You may be so bad that someone out there will decide you’ve stopped being a “real” human and be relegated to this nebulous concept of being a “monster.”

Monsters are people. People can be monsters. I think that is a part of humility - realizing that you are not immune to being cruel to the point of monstrosity and that cruel people are still humans with souls, with thoughts, with feelings, with loved ones, with normal, mundane interests. With the capacity to do vile things.

THATS ALL THE BIG SCARIES IN ONE BUG TFFF JU

Give it a dime, apparently.

Had to go research this thing, and the answer to what to do if it stings you is scream.

from Wikipedia-

“One researcher described the pain as “…immediate, excruciating, unrelenting pain that simply shuts down one’s ability to do anything, except scream. Mental discipline simply does not work in these situations. In terms of scale, the wasp’s sting is rated near the top of the Schmidt sting pain index, second only to that of the bullet ant, and is described by Schmidt as “blinding, fierce [and] shockingly electric”.“

Let’s back up a second and fully appreciate that description.

The Schmidt sting pain index, a widely used classification system for the bites and stings of ants, bees and wasps, is literally the personal ranking system of a guy named Justin Schmidt, who goes around letting bugs sting him for science. Like, that’s this Thing as a scientist.

In one entry, he describes the sting of the common bee as “almost pleasant, [like] a lover just bit your earlobe a little too hard.”

In another, the sting of the yellowjacket is described as “hot and smoky, almost irreverent. Imagine W. C. Fields extinguishing a cigar on your tongue.“

So when the Schmidt sting pain index characterises the sting of the tarantula hawk as “blinding, fierce [and] shockingly electric”, well, now you know what your standard for comparison is!

this is fascinating but when do we kinkshame Justin Schmidt
