is it over now? (was it over then?)

part five: i was hoping you'd be there

Robin managed to keep her shit together for approximately ten minutes after she stopped watching Steve make his way through security and into the depths of the airport. In the ride back to Steve's place, her leg was shaking so much Nancy discreetly grabbed Robin's pinky and held it in the back of the car.

The rest of the trafficky route back to Steve's all Robin could think about was how to fix things. She knew Steve didn't tell her about Eddie so she could fix things and Steve didn't run off to Italy to hide from everything but the situation still bothered Robin. She hadn't known Eddie for a terribly long time but he made her dingus happy so she held him in relatively high regard. It didn't make sense for him to just cut tail and run without leaving some sort of door open for a resolution and Robin was going to her darndest to figure out how on earth she could find that crack.

When they got back to Steve's apartment, Nancy didn't let Robin go long without asking for an explanation.

"Robs, babe, what is going on?" Nancy asked.

"I need to figure out how to solve Steve and Eddie." Robin answered.

"I don't think Steve wants you too. He seemed pretty resolved to close that chapter." Nancy urged.

"I know what he said but that's not what he wants. Also Eddie is a huge dummy if he doesn't realize how good he had it with Steve and also that Steve would never cheat on anyone. Especially not after y'all's whole thing. No offense." Robin continued.

"Okay so we aren't letting this go. What's the plan?" Nancy asked.

"Thanks for your support, love. I just can't figure out why Eddie jumped to the conclusion that you and Steve were together again. I mean no offense but like that ship very publicly sailed," Robin said.

"I'm trying really hard not to take offense but the more often you say it the more I am having trouble not being offended," Nancy snarked.

"Sorry, dingus wormed his way into my little heart long before you so I still gotta give you shit over soulmate solidarity. But back to the matter at hand. Eddie only assumed you would only be visiting Steve if you were trying to get back together when really you were coming to see little old me. So what if I came out. Like what if we came out? And shared some of the pictures from like super early on and thanked Steve for being a great friend for many years when I wasn't ready to take that step," Robin knew she was rambling but, hell, she was on a roll.

"Are you ready for that? I'm happy to take your lead on all this. It's not like we haven't already told everyone who is actually important to us. I mostly write freelance nowadays anyways so there isn't really some big bag corporate overlord I need to worry about. You know Steve doesn't need you to do this? It's one thing if you're ready to come out on your own, it's a whole different thing to do it for someone else," Nancy counseled.

"I really think I'm ready. I'm sick of Steve feeling like he needs to come to everything with me and you're stateside a lot more often and I'd love to go out on dates without the next day having like a million articles speculate if you're trying to move in on Steve. I think it's time," Robin rationalized.

"All right, then. We're doing this. Should we use this as an excuse to make Jon take cute couple pictures of us?" Nancy giggled a little at her suggestion.

"Yes! Perfect. Get him over here. Operation Save Dingus from his Self Sacrifice is a go!" Robin jumped up on the couch to make her point and Nancy immediately had to come to her aid as she wobbled enough to lose her balance.

Robin was excited. She was ready for the next step with Nancy and if it helped Steve get out of his own head and/or convinced a certain metalhead with very few remaining braincells to get his head out of his ass then so be it. Robin couldn't wait to think of all the sappy shit Nancy would pretend to be annoyed at she'd be able to do now. Steve would be back in a few weeks so Robin anxiously awaited Jon's response and started several caption ideas in her notes app.

Sol Invictus

He hears the commotion before he sees it. A low mutter of hushed whispers that picks up at the back of the crowd, spreads all over the courtyard within moments, swelling in volume until it crests into a chaos of excited shouts and cheers and clapping hands. Eddie’s stomach lurches, and for a brief moment, he considers just turning away and leaving, sparing himself this last look.  The thought pulls a wry little laugh from his lips. Who is he even trying to fool?  Of course he must look. He has been helpless against it since that day in the alley, when he first laid eyes on him.  And so he raises his eyes, and he looks upon the sun.

The Harrington Pet

Steve's father, the Duke of Harrington, throws a young man to his feet. His captive is hunched over with cream tunic torn, bright blood dampens his sleeve and chest while sable curls fall forward to obscure the features of a pale face.

"Here, I got this from the battlefield. It's your pet. A future duke needs a fine and pretty pet." The older man's eyes are as flat and venomous as a snake, yet his tone carries traces of amusement like he knows the repugnance his heir will feel at his gift.

Steve's hands shake, but he keeps them flat against his sides lest he give away himself. "Thank you," he manages, calm despite himself.

His father nods dismissively while throwing his steel gauntlets onto the broad oak table. He takes a necklace from the desk and casually throws it to Steve, red glinting in the air. "Here, you'll need this."

Steve dangles it in front of his face, trying to get a deeper understanding of what he's holding. On a thin leather loop hangs a ruby oval, glistening like blood in the candlelight it is framed by silver, skeletal fingers.

A scatter of goosebumps form at the back of his neck. "What is it?"

That damned amusement is still present as the Duke says, "Clutch the ruby and your pet will feel the pain right to its heart. Like a stern fist squeezing it. I believe it is supposed to be excruciating."

Steve feels bile building under his tongue, turning almost coppery in fear. He will not be using anything so barbaric, but he nods tightly to his father, "Thank you, I'll use it well."

He looks down at his 'pet' who has shifted back onto his heels. Dirt is smeered across a surprisingly delicate and handsome face, and Steve can see the rips at his knees from being roughly thrown about by his father's men.

His eyes are a dark brown, the type that should be full of wide warmth but are instead covered in a flat, calculating sheen. That is, until he sees Steve watching him, then the shrewed look disappears behind a beguiling smile, "Hello, Master. Please, call me Eddie."

"Mom," Steve whispered in the inky blackness of his parents' room. "Mom, there's something under my bed."

Patricia Harrington turned over. "Steven, go back to sleep," she murmured.

"I can't." Steve said. "There's a monster."

"No such thing." his mom said, angrier, more awake. "Go to bed now, and if I catch you out of bed again you can forget going to Tommy's this weekend."

Steve nodded and padded back down the hall, pausing at his door then taking a running jump into bed.

The room was silent.

okay due to popular demand (3 people mwah!), here's all i have on prisoners ranger!steve, bard!eddie, and the royal entourage accompanying the diplomatic mission that went so horribly wrong

Steve’s whole body is made of pain, and has been for the past few days. His feet are aching and raw from trying to keep up as they were bound to horses and dragged along. His skin is chafed and bleeding where the unforgiving rocks have managed to destroy his clothes after one too many falls, and every smallest of cuts feels like his body is nothing more than a pulsating mess.

Worst of all, though, is the dizziness. He doesn’t know if his head is still bleeding or if the wetness he can feel running down his temple is his body’s testament to the unfamiliar heat, but it wouldn’t make a difference anyway.

There’s only pain. And nausea. His eyes are open but he needs a second to understand what he’s seeing — and what he’s seeing is a ceiling made of sand coloured stone. Distantly, he hears a door clanging shut, but that might just as well be a memory.

He’s going to throw up. Tough luck when you don’t even know where up is.

A groan leaves his mouth as he tries to take a deep breath and fails miserably. Instead, he can add two broken ribs to the list of misery.

Gods above — whichever of them are listening — he’s tired. But he fears that if he closes his eyes, he might not open them anymore for the sheer release that would bring. He can’t sleep, can’t rest, not when—

“Easy now,” a gentle voice interrupts his less than coherent thoughts and just moments later, a tender hand is combing through his blood-crusted hair. “You shouldn’t move, my friend. There’s nowhere to move to anymore.”

pt. 1 2 3 💐

When Steve first started working at the flower shop, he had only been helping customers and taking their orders over the phone. Their small family business had grown quicker than anticipated, and Steve’s parents had needed the extra set of hands.

The shop had been a gift to his mother. It had been something she’d always wanted, but his dad had never agreed to, until finally, he had fucked up badly enough in their relationship and had funded it out of guilt.

It shouldn’t have been a surprise that it turned out to be as successful as it was. Steve’s mom, Linda, was passionate and talented. She loved flowers and celebrations of any kind and maintained a big, beautiful garden at home.

It also helped that his father and mother were socialites. They had a lot of friends to support the business, spread the word, and make it b(l)oom. They had a great location in the mall with little competition around.

For good or bad, weddings, anniversaries, sickness and death, flowers were always there.

Steve had mostly helped after school, but it became his full-time gig once he’d graduated and hadn’t gotten into college. Due to the sheer volume of orders, his mother could no longer make the arrangements alone, so she’d taught Steve everything she knew.

From watching her over the years, Steve knew how to care for the flowers. He could prep them and nurture them. The creativity that came naturally to his mother took Steve a bit of time, but he eventually realized what looked good. Usually, it was the simpler arrangements. He was good at that.

Linda was very kind in general, always giving him positive feedback and encouragement instead of criticism. Steve was lucky to have her, especially since his father was so hard on him. She loved and cared for him unconditionally. While his father constantly tried to make him feel inferior, her belief in him built him up to be the strong, confident man he now was.

When his mom had to step back even more from the business to travel abroad with his dad, Steve suggested they hire Robin. Scoops hadn't been fun for her, probably ever, and Steve had missed her since graduating.

At first, Steve didn’t think he’d like working at the shop, but like a flower, it had grown on him. He liked helping people, talking to them, and most surprisingly, he liked the flowers and what he could do with them. While he liked roses—after he removed their thorns, of course—his true favorite was sunflowers.

Working there suited him. It was simple. It let him use his hands and mind in ways he hadn’t tapped into while in school or doing sports. He enjoyed the additive and subtractive aspects of flower arranging. His favorite part was the pruning. It was almost cathartic. He loved pulling and clipping off all the unnecessary parts and making them look perfect.

It took Steve a minute to recognize the man walking around the shop.

Last month, when he was working on the big window display, Steve had seen him for the first time. Guitar case, long rocker hair, enough rings and piercings to set off a metal detector fifty miles away… but Steve remembered it most because the guy had tried to say something to him through the glass. He had left before Steve had gotten the chance to go out and ask him what he’d said.

The second time, Robin had waited on the mystery man. Steve had just caught him walking out with a dozen Black-eyed Susans while he stood there, disgruntled, in his soil-stained apron.

This time—the third time—it was late, and Robin had already clocked out for the night. Steve was sick. He was in the middle of a cold and just wanted to go home and crawl into bed. But even though he wasn’t feeling good, he knew he still had to do his job. There were flowers to be sold.

So, mustering up a charming smile, Steve approached him. "Can I help you find anything today?"

You might have noticed that my BigBang still hasn't been posted, but that doesn't mean I haven't been working on it, just like my wonderful artists @mcdadarts and @m00n-arin have. I would like to give you a small teaser before the posting date on February 15th...

My Steddie Corpse Bride drabble seemed to get people interested in more. I heard you and because of that, I proudly announce that my BigBang fanfiction is...

With This Ring

(an excerpt from the first chapter, very reminescent of the drabble I posted over a year ago)

Steve wandered further and further into the forest, kicking at decayed wood and fallen leaves, his mood sour. “You want vows, I’ll give you some,” he muttered and grasped the wedding ring in his hand so tightly it made an imprint into his skin.

He stomped on a rotten branch, snapping it in half.

“With this hand, I will punch my father’s perfectly shaved face and get arrested, maybe that would postpone the stupid wedding for a day or two.”

His foot slipped on a wet patch of moss and he stomped on it in retribution.

“Your cup will never empty because if you ever marry into my family, alcoholism is the way to go, baby, and wine might not be enough to get through a single dinner with my parents, do you like vodka? You will need vodka.”

Steve’s suit got caught on a thorny bush and he swore, sending a bunch of nearby crows into a complaining match. He could relate.

“With this candle, I will set fire to our marriage certificate and set you free, at least for two days or so before our parents bribe someone to re-issue it on a fireproof paper.”

With that last word, he slipped on moss once again and barely kept his balance, only stopping against a stump of an old oak tree. He remembered spending careless summer afternoons there, in the small clearing with Eddie, laughing and humming tunes that his mind refused to forget. The same ones he still played whenever he could, gripping the memory tight and not letting it go. Eddie might have been gone, but his melodies would stay with Steve forever, no matter how dramatic that sounded.

The old oak tree used to be a place of comfort for him and Steve really needed some comfort. Uncaring whether his suit trousers would survive the damp and overgrown seating, he slumped down and closed his eyes, sighing. It really felt like his life was over before it had even begun.

He finally opened his palm to look at the ring, turning it in his fingers. It looked beautiful in the setting sun, gleaming and reflecting the dying rays of light. Such a small thing. Such a commitment.

“With this ring, I wish someone like you could be mine,” whispered Steve and hung his head down.

He would have been content sitting in the woods much longer, but several things happened that foiled his plan.

First, the birds stopped singing and the woods became eerily quiet.

Second, a strong gust of wind threw several fallen leaves into Steve’s face, obscuring his vision.

And third – a hand grasped Steve’s ankle and started pulling.

Steve yelped and tried to run, get away from that icy touch, but to no avail - the grasp of the hand, yep, definitely a hand, not a root or anything, remained firm, although he distantly noticed some of its joints cracking, as if they were finally getting some movement after a long period of stiffness.

Steve’s escape attempt had him yanked back, spinning around and then everything was a whirl of thick tree crowns, growing shadows and cowing of crows – and then his back hit the forest floor and everything went dark.

When he came to, he immediately wished he’d remained unconscious for just a little longer.

The pressure on his ankle was gone, but only because the hand found something better to do – digging. It started removing the soil around and soon another one joined it, loosening the soil…and disappearing into the ground.

A thud from underneath. The crows were louder and louder, flapping their wings and flying in circles over the clearing.

Another thud, roots cracking, the whole tree stump shaking and tilting back.

And with the third one, the roots snapped and those hands were back, but with them a head of messy dark hair, pale skin covered in mud, sticks and patches of moss, faded black clothes and a chain belt, a belt that Steve knew too well, this had to be his punishment, had to be a sign because he still tried to pretend that he hadn’t known from the second the hand with all those gaudy thick rings touched him, but now he couldn’t pretend any longer, the long fingers pushed back all those dirtied strands of hair and Steve was met with the deep eyes that haunted his dreams, the best and the worst ones. Only in those dreams, the eyes had a spark of life in them, the desire to exist, to fight.

These had none of it. Not anymore.

Crawling away from the horrifying sight, Steve hissed as something in his ankle snapped and with unexpected clarity, he remembered his recent half-baked plan to break his own leg. Finally, something going according to plan, he thought and felt a hysterical urge to laugh.

The figure spat out a mouthful of dirt and wiped his face, throwing his head back and letting out a dry, humorless laugh. His skin had a blue tint but, and Steve couldn’t comprehend why his brain would focus on that instead of the actual reanimated corpse in front of him, was surprisingly well-preserved. It would have been a wonderful Halloween costume and maybe others would have doubted, assumed that it was a prank, a sick joke, but Steve saw the undisturbed moss, the unnatural movements of those once graceful limbs, and knew

What used to be Eddie leaned down, the clearing quiet except for cracking of joints and Steve’s uneven breathing, and picked up something shiny, something that caught the last ray of the setting sun before shadows enveloped both of them, the living and the dead. It was a ring – the ring that Steve must have dropped right before he fainted.

“Eddie-“ Steve whispered and he wanted to say so much, ask even more, but the words wouldn’t leave his lips. He just stared at his former friend and the ring he was holding.

Eddie’s pale lips spread into a wide smile, his dirtied teeth on display. “That for me, Harrington?” he asked, cocking his head to the side as he examined the ring. His voice was rough, parched. “I expected at least one date first, perhaps a dinner. And the ring isn’t really my style. But,” he sighed with theatricality so familiar that it made Steve’s heart ache, “beggars can’t be choosers. Well then, King Steven the first of the House of Harrington…”

Steve couldn’t speak. He just watched as Eddie slipped the wedding band onto his ring finger.

“I do.”

The full fic will begin posting on 15th of February, unless the world ends. Or something.

werewolf steve, werebat eddie (ch2)

🦇🧥🦇

Eddie’s knee bounces in the stationary van parked outside the Harrington house; he stares down at the open Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual clutched between his arms, flipping between the werewolf and the dire wolf. A drawing of the former has it standing upright, muscled and snarling with outstretched claws; his eyes are drawn to chaotic evil.

He knows that Steve isn’t evil. He does. The man who had spent hours next to Eddie at his hospital bedside showed an honour and trustworthiness that had drawn Eddie in even before he’d recognised it.

No, the caring guy he’s come to know is about as far from an alignment that lacks compassion and kills for sport as someone could get. That Steve is capable of wielding a nail-bat against the monsters of the Upside Down only lends an appealingly chaotic feel to the man Eddie had begun to think of as a rogue knight.

Sighing, he flips to the other page held open by his spare hand: dire wolf. Unaligned and a beast advantaged by its pack, this seems like Steve’s speed. Resembling his transformed self more acutely with its simple, albeit large wolf appearance. His finger stops on the bloodied maw, but the idea of it is still terrifying.

Reluctantly, he turns to the page he’s now memorised by heart. Man-shaped, this monster growls with open fangs too; sharp tapered ears are fixed on a figure draped in an aristocratic overcoat and cape. Finger trembling, he traces undead and lawful evil before pausing over bat polymorph as one of the vampire’s characteristics.

A loud bang smacks against the side of the van and Eddie jumps high enough to hit his head on the Chevrolet’s roof. “Ow, Christ!” He hisses, rubbing the sore spot and glaring at Dustin grinning at him through the closed window.

“Come on,” he shouts, “Everyone’s here!”

Eddie scowls, leaving behind the manual to tumble out of the van. Dustin immediately starts pushing him from behind and Eddie whacks at him with his hands, “Lay off, man. I’m coming, okay.”

Dustin hums doubtfully, “Yeah, but I watched you sit in the van for the last ten minutes and that was only after I noticed you’d arrived. Who knows how long it was going to take you?”

He quickly opens the front door before Dustin pushes him right smack into it, but the younger boy continues shoving at Eddie until he stumbles into Steve’s living room. In a similar configuration to yesterday’s intervention, the party sits, lounges, or stands about the room, quietly talking.

On the couch, Robin sits cross-legged with Steve who’s flipping through a magazine. Eddie’s relieved to see that all four limbs are human-shaped, and mouth only curved into a soft pout as he contemplates the article in front of him.

Everyone pauses to look over at their loud entrance. Steve glances up and, meeting his calm expression, Eddie almost blushes at how uncoordinated he must have looked falling through the door. He averts his gaze to El who approaches him with an outstretched palm, “Are you ready?”

Eddie sighs but takes her hand; she leads him to the open floor and they sit across from each other, “Yeah, we might as well do this. So, you’re going to force the bat out or something?”

“There’s no guarantee that you can shift,” Lucas leans back against the wall next to Will with casually folded arms. “You could be a normal human with bat scars and that’s it.”

“Or I could be a vampire of the night,” Eddie counters darkly. “I’ve been craving meat lately.”

Max rolls her eyes, “You have not, you big liar. I saw you scoffing down Honey Crunch on your front porch only two days ago.”

“Yeah, well, I was high. Maybe weed mellows out the beast.”

Eddie’s gaze flies to Steve when he snorts, but Steve looks away, concentrating on the magazine that Eddie suddenly suspects he’s not actually reading.

The thought that he’s avoiding Eddie stirs a familiar sense of guilt, giving rise to the niggle that he’d tried to forget after the wolf left yesterday, further punctuated by Robin’s distinct stink-eye. Even amidst the fear that had gripped him, he’d been able to see a sad, dejected version of Steve in the down-turned tail and slow trudge away.

“I'm going to take you into the void,” El says, holding out both her hands over her knees and Eddie takes them at her urging. “When I visit Steve there, he is able to feel the wolf and communicate with him.”

“I sort of see him next to me, if it helps,” Steve finally pipes up, watching Eddie warily like he’s expecting him to reject the advice, but Eddie only nods grimly. He’s going to need all the tips he can get he suspects. “Do I let it possess me or something?”

Steve frowns, a hint of reproach about him, “My wolf doesn’t posses me, he is me. Just like I’m him.” He shakes his head at Eddie’s confusion, “If you have a bat or a vampire or, I don’t know, maybe you’ll have a wolf too, then just reach out to him. He wants to be a part of you and you’ll both figure it out from there.”

Eddie looks into the steady gaze of Steve’s hazel eyes and feels it like a hand over his own: Steve has done this before, and successfully. He just needs to trust in the rogue knight one more time. “Okay,” he says, closing his eyes and following El’s lead.

🐺🐺🐺

Steve throws his Fine Gardening magazine onto the coffee table and leans against Robin’s shoulder, she presses back. “Does it usually take this long with me,” he murmurs, trying to keep quiet for the two sitting silently in the middle of the room. Both El and Eddie have their eyes closed and hands clasped with the other. Max had turned the television to a snowy channel to help channel El’s concentration with the static sound.

She hums a negative, “But then, you two only did it to play around and see if there was more you could learn about yourself. This is Eddie trying to find out whether he even has another version to turn into.”

She grabs his arm suddenly, “Wait.” Steve blinks, unsure of what he’d seen other than to describe it as a pulse around Eddie. A long beat passes before the trick of the eye flickers again, so quickly that Steve can’t be sure of what he’s seeing.

In one rapid swoop, the air around Eddie contracts, pulling abruptly inwards until Eddie the human disappears to be replaced with a bat standing unsteadily in front of El. He blinks wide eyes, faltering on tiny feet before stumbling over to land on his back.

Eddie squawks in what Steve thinks is shock before frantically flapping his extended wings and tossing over to push up into the air, erratically darting around the suddenly panicking humans.

With one wing beating harder than the other, he drunkenly tilts and rolls into Mike’s long hair. Shrieking, Mike pulls Eddie out and flings him away even while crying out, “Shit! Sorry, Eddie! Sorry!”

Eddie cries out himself and flutters, gaining his momentum only to slam into the wall with a thump next to Dustin who leaps forward trying to catch him, but Eddie desperately twists before leaping higher, aiming for the peak of the ceiling.

“Catch him,” Will yells as Lucas runs out of the room.

“I’m trying,” Dustin shrieks in a tone that matches the high screeches of Eddie above them.

Robin shrugs off her boxy jacket, “Wait, I’ve got this.” She advances on Eddie as he zig zags against the wall again, but he must see her as a large threatening animal because he chitters wildly before smacking his wings at her face. Robin yelps and falls, only narrowly avoiding hitting her head on the ground by Max urgently jumping underneath to stop her rapid descent.

Lucas skids into the living room, triumphantly holding aloft the large pool skimmer usually stored in the garden shed. “Steve,” he yells before throwing it across the room.

Steve deftly catches the long handle in the air and, with a twist of his wrist, scoops Eddie mid-flight. Quickly flipping the pole, he entangles his small body in the net.

Panting or, in Mike’s case, holding down his hair, the group silently gather around the squirming bat version of Eddie as he shrieks and tries to bite his way out of the thin rope.

Steve thinks of his first fumbling and panicked steps: the distinct difference between having two legs extended to four, not even at the right height, let alone the terror of suddenly having a completely different way of looking and feeling the world had been indescribable. There are still scratches in the wooden floorboards from how hard he had dug his claws in to stop his legs from skidding in all directions.

“Back up, guys,” he says softly, keeping his tone low and soothing. “Hey, Eddie, hey,” he shushes, positioning the net against his torso so he can roll Eddie out of the mesh without letting him escape. Everyone steps back or sits in a chair, and Steve brings Eddie higher up to his chest so he can meet the eyes of the little guy.

Although his thinking or way of interpreting his surroundings may be a little different, Steve is always aware of the world as he would be as a human, and he can see that it’s the same for Eddie. The big wet eyes of his bat form aren’t that different from his human ones, Steve thinks, a little amused even while worried at how hard Eddie is panting.

“It’s okay,” Steve says, “You’re okay, you’re with friends, and this isn’t permanent. You’re just a bat for a little bit, Eddie, and you’ll be human in no time. Okay? You’re okay.” He keeps repeating reassuring nonsense, keeping his fingers firmly wrapped around squirming wings and resting Eddie against his heart.

As a wolf, Steve likes to lay his head over Robin’s heart, likes the proof that she is alive and well under him, and often finds himself calming under her steady thump, thump, thump.

Under his fingers, he can feel the frantic thrumming of Eddie’s heart start to calm too.

“That’s good,” he croons softly, stroking his thumb over the soft down of Eddie’s head. He takes stock of the little body in front of him: over Eddie’s nose the bridge is one long stripe of white, the rest of him covered in a deep brown while the ruff of his neck is almost golden, his ears are tapered as is the long tip of his pink tongue.

They all watch while Steve successfully calms Eddie as if he is a baby cradled to him. “Do you think that’s a were thing?” Asks Lucas, peering at Eddie as his breathing slows down, he blinks back up at him.

“I don’t know,” Will says thoughtfully, “Steve is pretty soothing to have around.” El nods while Mike shoots his friend a look of betrayal.

Steve rolls his eyes, “He was just scared. Look, now he’s had a moment to chill he’s with us again.” And, sure enough, little Eddie’s eyes are drooping as Steve continues to lightly pat him, clearly relaxing into the comforting gesture. He loosens his hold, still keeping a firm grip but not so tightly in fear of Eddie struggling again.

Max snorts as she peers down, “Oh yeah, there’s the big bad metalhead everyone fears.”

Eddie’s closing eyes snap open with a glare and he squeaks at her. Unfortunately, Steve thinks, the cuteness of it all only supports Max’s teasing. Robin meets his eyes over the kids’ heads and silently laughs in agreement.

“Okay,” Steve orders, “I think the lot of us in the same room may be too much for him right now. You guys skedaddle and we’ll let you know when he’s back to rights.”

Dustin looks doubtful, “What can you do that we can’t?”

Robin snorts, “Uh, Dusty-bun, Steve is literally the expert in this room when it comes to were-changes. You can’t research your way out of this one.”

Dustin grumps, “I could. If we didn’t have Steve, I could absolutely be the one to help him get back to normal.” He turns to the backpack shoved against the table. “Here,” he says, pulling out two books with photos of bats across the covers. Steve peers further into the bag and can see back-ups that apparently didn’t pass muster. “These are the books I brought on bats. If he starts craving blood, let me know — I have more on vampires when he needs them.”

Max takes them from his hands while Lucas steers Dustin towards the front door, where they’d left their bikes outside. Mike mutters a mocking noise that sounds like skedaddle and, with that, the room falls silent once more.

Robin and Steve look over at Max as she falls back onto the couch with El quickly following behind. She stares back belligerently, “What? Mom dropped me off and Eddie was our ride back.” El crosses her arms with a serene smile.

Steve sighs, “Okay, but we’re not doing anything exciting and you guys are making dinner.” The girls readily agree, heating leftovers from Steve’s fridge and serving the four of them as they sit in the living room, eating while watching a Bewitched marathon. At Steve’s instruction, Robin had brought down his blue hoodie with its tunnel-like pocket over his belly.

Little Eddie had curled up inside of it and Steve keeps one hand over him to provide what he hopes feels like shelter and comfort; under it, he can feel the heat of his small body and the steady rhythm of his breathing.

“You look like you’re pregnant,” Robin acerbically observes from the other end of the couch, feet crossed into her lap for the lotus position.

“Does that mean that I can finally eat butterscotch ice cream without you making that face?” He counters with a bitchy expression back.

“What face?” She protests even as she makes The Face. Max rises her brow to Steve, “Why does she look like that?”

“That summer at Scoops maybe put her off some flavours for life,” he shares. El ignores them all in favour of watching Samantha wiggling her nose to float Darrin out of a tree.

“If I have to smell USS Butterscotch one more time, I’m going to puke — lack of pregnancy be damned,” Robin warns.

The commercials blares once Samantha finishes rescuing her husband, and El moves to peek inside the hoodie, tentatively extending a finger and gasping when Eddie’s little bat foot comes out to grip it. “He feels so soft.”

Steve snickers at Robin and he thinks he feels what’s supposed to be a bat bite through the cotton in retaliation, but it’s hard to tell with the lack of sharp fangs behind it. He sobers for the younger members of the room, “Yeah, but he can’t stay this way forever. Can you sense anything from him, El?”

She closes her eyes while continuing to hold Eddie’s foot, “He is not upset like earlier, but I don’t think he is ready to come back to being human-Eddie yet either.”

Steve looks worriedly down at the bump over his stomach, “Is he okay? I ran around a lot at first too, but once I figured out what was happening I tried to turn human again as soon as possible.”

“Yeah, but you also didn’t know that it was possible to turn back to human,” Robin points out. “He could be chilling ‘cause he knows that everything is going to be okay.”

El hums, “No, I do not think that’s it.” She shrugs, gently untangling Eddie’s clawed toes to lean back into Max who shifts an arm and drapes it over El’s shoulders comfortingly. “But he is not willing to share either. I’m sorry.”

“It’s not your fault,” Robin reassures her as she peeks into the other end of the pocket, smirking as she waggles a playful finger at him. Steve can see the wide, wet eyes of Eddie peeking out at her in curiosity. “Maybe he knows that he’s cuter as a bat than as a stinky human boy.”

Eddie glares and snaps his small teeth in the air before sullenly turning, curling up and facing the other way. Once again, a small hidden lump in the hoodie. Steve sighs, “We’ll give him the night and, if he’s not back tomorrow, maybe you can look for him in the void, El? Ask him what’s going on or guide him back to being human again. Whatever it is that he needs since it’s not working for him right now.”

He glances at the stairs, “Do you guys want to stay over? You can sleep in one of the spare rooms?”

“I call third bedroom,” Robin calls, standing up decisively, “Second bedroom has a weird smell.” She points her finger at Steve’s opening mouth, “I don’t care if you can’t smell anything, which, weird. Since you’re the one with the super nose these days.”

She grimaces and says more quietly, “I don’t think I can bunk up tonight, all the screaming got me…” She waggles her hand around her ears and Steve nods, knowing that she needs some quiet time after a lot of stimulation.

Max smirks and takes El by the hand, “That’s cool, we can’t smell whatever weirdo smell your nose is picking up. Night guys.” The girls wave before heading upstairs and Steve shuts off the television.

Picking his way through the house he double checks that the windows and doors are locked before turning off the lights and heading to bed. Lying down, he snuggles little Eddie to him, the small body already curled on top of his chest and asleep.

If you enjoyed anything of this I hope you'll consider leaving a comment over on Ao3 - it would make my day! 💖🦇🐺💖

@birdinthefamily said "👹", which i am taking to mean she wants a snippet of the fic:

"That was pathetic," Robin tells him, as Sherrie Steer walks dejectedly out of the store.

"I'm trying to lead with honesty, here," he says, grabbing the tape she abandoned and taking it back to the shelves. He didn't want to watch Sixteen Candles again anyway.

Robin pulls her vest on, clips her bangs back, and switches over the cash drawer so she can close. "What are you even doing? You don't have shit going on tomorrow."

He reshelves the tape a little more forcefully than it deserves. "Um, I do actually have shit going on tomorrow, I'm picking Dustin up from his little club and then we're getting Hoosier Pie at the American Legion."

She stares at him.

"I told Claudia we'd meet her there," he says defensively.

"Sherrie Steer was throwing herself at you."

He scoffs. "I don't think she was, actually."

"She was literally asking to go roll around in the backseat of your car, Steve, and you're turning her down to go hang out with a fifteen year old and his mother at the American Legion. On Valentine's Day?"

"There's gonna be free pie!"

I owe you a black eye and two kisses

TW: drugs, swearing

Steve knew this was a bad idea. He knew it, and yet there he was, doing it anyway. His hands were shaking, and he was pretty sure he was still bleeding somewhere, but he sat patiently at the picnic table behind Hawkins High, waiting for the dealer to show up.

And honestly? Drugs wouldn't fix his situation. If anything, they would probably make it worse. But he just wanted to get back to that floaty-feeling he had felt with Robin a few days ago—to get rid of the feeling that he wasn't safe, because the people who hurt him were gone, and he was fine.

He should be fine, but he wasn't.

And he had a headache, just to top it all off.

He pressed his face into his hands, hating the way That his still-raw skin stung at the contact, but he didn't have the energy to lift his head up. He had felt on the verge of passing out for hours, and he was probably some kind of fucked up, again. But how would he know?

After starcourt, he had pushed the paramedics away—insisting that they check on everyone else, first, leaving him to sit in the back of an ambulance alone— his bruised-up Knees dangling over the edge of the vehicle, a blanket wrapped around his shoulder.

He hadn't needed it. He should have given it to someone else.

He could have gotten himself killed by refusing medical help like that. But that's who he's supposed to be, right? The self-sacrificing hero who puts others before himself—always making sure that everyone else is okay and comfortable before he limps off to go and tend to his own wounds in solitude.

And that's what he was doing. Tending to his own wounds. By buying drugs, of course, like any reasonable person would do. Besides, getting high was always more fun for him after serious head-trauma. He knew the risks, and he liked them.

He and Robin would have to find a new job, too.

Family Video was hiring soon, though, he had seen an ad for it in the newspaper this morning. He'd have to talk to Robin about that. But, then again, he’d probably end up vetoing the option, since he really didn't want to work for Keith.

A voice startled him from his thoughts —a teasing "Well, well, if it ish't Steve Harrington"—and he panicked, his body flinching into itself on its own, back curled like that would protect him from any kind of harm. He could still be beaten senseless like that, though, he knew from experience.

Steve forced himself to straighten, taking a deep breath, and trying to ignore the way that the pounding in his head only got worse after the sudden movement.

He didn't turn as Eddie Munson made his way to The other side of the picnic table, sitting down and placing his small, metal lunchbox between them.

“Munson,” Steve muttered, Kkeeping his head ducked, his eyes glued to a spot of lichen growing out of the wood of the table, desperately hoping that the hair falling over his forehead would help hide his battered-up face better.

“Harrington,” Eddie said back, but the cockines and teasing in his voice faltered slightly. "Shit, man, what happened to you?"

Steve shook his head, trying to turn away, but Eddie must have leaned over the table, because there was a thumb pressed to his chin, bringing his face up—the tip of it just brushing his bottom lip for a moment. It didn't move away when he winced and tugged back slightly, his skin burning at the contact. “Steve. What happened?"

Steve moved his eyes up to meet Eddie’s, and he had never felt more exposed in a t-shirt and jeans than he did now, what with the way Eddie was looking at him. It was Robin's Madonna t-shirt, and even though she only wore baggy things, really, it was still a bit tight on him, pushing up against his stomach a bit. But he had borrowed it because it was soft and cotton, the kind of fabric that didn't make him feel like he'd need to peel off his skin to be comfortable again after wearing it.

"Starcourt, " Steve managed, kind of loving the way that Eddie's thumb pressed against his skin a bit harder, his index finger hooked under Steve's chin to keep him in place. "M'okay."

Eddie narrowed his eyes, looking Steve over again, and Steve could feel his face flush as Eddie ran a finger down Steve’s bruised cheek and sighed. “Huh. Alright, then. Glad you’re okay.”

Steve nodded and watched as Eddie opened the box, looking at Steve expectantly, because of course he was waiting for Steve to tell him what he wanted, but Steve was feeling unsure, now. Did he really need to get high? That didn’t seem like it would help with his headache. He had really only done this once, and he felt horrible afterwards.

“I—I can’t do this,” He choked out, hating the way that his eyes stung, his hands gripping at his arms as he looked away, because he was tired. He was tired, that was it. Definitely. His fingers dug into his skin a bit harder, and he managed to get out an, “I’m sorry,” when he heard Eddie sigh and the box close.

“It’s okay,” Eddie whispered, his voice softer and less demanding than before. “Do you need anything? A ride home? You look kind of pale, sweetheart.”

“I don’t…I’m fine. You probably—you don’t need to do that,” Steve sniffed, wiping his eyes. He didn’t want to cry in front of Eddie, but he really couldn’t help it.

“At least let me walk you to your car?”

“I didn’t bring it. I—I walked here. Needed some fresh air, I gues…”

He looked back at Eddie, and Eddie looked him over once more, getting up and looking at Steve expectantly again. “Well, if you think I’m going to let you walk for half-an-hour like this, then you’re wrong. Let’s go, I’ll drive you home.”

(I might make a part two of this and post it if people are interested, but I’m putting this here so that you guys can bug me about finishing this if you’d like :D)

I did not read this over. So sorry for any mistakes.

Eddie gets famous but Steve is the one who ends up addicted to the kind of shit Eddie knows better than to touch. The band is taking off and Eddie worries, so Steve makes sure that he keeps it hidden. If he had less money, he would have a slower slide into deeper, more dangerous risks. But his boyfriend is the lead guitar of the band on the cover of magazines, so it's easy for Steve score. His boyfriend is famous and touring and Steve is listed as a personal assistant as he tags along. His boyfriend is performing to a roaring crowd at Madison Square Garden, and Steve is overdosing in the bathroom.

Uh. Sorry?

Eddie tosses the towel to the stagehand and catches the water bottle right after. He downs it, misses the throw to the trash can in the hallway by several feet, and retreats to the dressing rooms. Gareth is already stripped to the waist and headed towards the shower, Jeff is still in full makeup, devouring the pizza their contract rider has delivered during their second encore. Frank has ear muffs on and his eyes closed. Each of them to their own preferred come down after a show.

last sentence tag game

I was tagged by @griefabyss69 and @doublecherrypiediscosuperfly and it totally wasn't almost a week ago 😉

rules: share the last sentence you wrote and tag as many people as there are words in the sentence.

At least the man he loved would live to fight another day. Eddie only wished he could be there to see it.

12 words, 12 tags

Demogorgon daily prompt for the word Lucas on the Stranger Things Writers Guild! G

Assume the setup for this is Steve carrying Eddie into the ER all bloodied and heroic before eventually collapsing cause sepsis and concussions and such and such and ending up in the hospital as well. It's been a few days, Max is awake cause El, Eddie is cleared, things are great.

~~~
"-eel safer when you're around, even Mike." Eddie surfaces disoriented, hears a voice but can't quite place it in the moment of groginess with the beeping and the stark white room assaulting his eyes and the hospital smells burning at his nose. "You know he'd never admit that though."
A pause.
"Louisville beat out LSU by eleven yesterday, it was a pretty good game, I thought maybe we could watch it, I got my dad to... tape it... for me." Lucas, the voice is Lucas, wobbly as it gets towards the end. "The finals are tomorrow so, you should hurry up and wake up, you know? You're gonna miss it. I know Indiana didn't get very far but, you like Louisville right?"
Eddie cracks his eyes back open slowly, brightness of the room a lot less harsh the second go around, and looks over towards where Lucas is sitting. His back is facing Eddie and he's perched in a chair at someone's bedside, *Steve's bedside*. which, shit, the last thing Eddie remembers is... huh, bats, telling Dustin he loved him, Steve's worried face hovering over him.
So what happened to Steve?
"I have to go soon, Mom wants help setting up Max's room, she's gonna stay with us until she can get the casts off her arms, remember?" Lucas sighs, "I think she was hoping you'd wake up before she got sent home, it'll be hard to bring her to visit."
Eddie doesn't know if he should interrupt the moment, Lucas' voice taking on that wet quality that signals tears, Eddie's never been the best at dealing with tears. Hasn't been the best at dealing with Lucas in general really, which, he grimaces, is something he still needs to fix.
"Steve. Come on man you have to wake up soon. You promised to take me to see the Pacers, who else is gonna do that?" A sniffle, and Eddie can see Lucas wipe his sleeve across his face. "None of the other's even came to my game, but you-"
He sobs, a cut off quiet sound hand coming up to cover his mouth, and it gives Eddie time to feel like shit about that one before Lucas continues. God he was a dick about that, Steve had chewed him out about it too.
"I was on the bench and you still came." Lucas' voice lowers to a whisper and he adds, "you have to get better, Steve, nobody else understands like you do."
He stands, taking a deep breath to settle himself he grabs Steves hand, giving it a pat and then fiddles with his blankets so they sit just so.
"Dustin will be here in a few, I'll see you soon, Steve, rest up." Call Eddie a coward, though he thinks he's earned a few weeks leeway on that at the very least, but he quickly snaps his eyes shut before Lucas can turn. He shouldn't have heard any of that, it wasn't for him, he has things to make right with the kid but now's not the time for that either.
Lucas pauses at the foot of Eddie's bed on his way out, taps the railing twice before he goes on his way.
Yeah, they definitely need to talk, Eddie thinks as he opens his eyes again to look over at Steve resting quiet in his bed. He's got a few apologies to make, jocks aren't all bad, after all.
Ao3 link will go here eventually lol
Wayne knew something was wrong before he even finished parking in the gravel out front of the trailer.
He took his time fitting the key into the door and turning the lock, the hunting rifle he kept under the truck seats braced carefully under one arm. Entering slowly, he scanned the kitchen and hallway for threats. Instincts he hadn’t called upon in years, a vigilance he’d learned across an ocean, guided his eyes towards the spots that would provide best cover for a potential attacker.
But he didn’t find any attackers.
Eddie seemed to be composed entirely of knees and elbows, folded as small as he could make himself in the farthest corner of the front room. But what struck Wayne the most was his eyes. Not just the purpling swell of a day-old bruise that cast a shadow over one in the dim, yellow light. No, it was the deep, primal fear in Eddie’s expression that gave him pause.
The boy was looking at him like he carried an executioner’s blade.
again, happy birthday lexi <3
“Hello?” Steve answered, having learned to not open the call with who was answering without knowing who was calling from one too many scam calls
“Is this Steve Harrington?” A soft feminine voice asked, taking Steve by surprise.
“May I ask who’s calling?” Steve asked, not willing to concede his identity until he knew it wasn’t someone looking to sell him ‘Alpha Pills’ or something just as ridiculous.
“Of course! My name is Chrissy Cunningham, you sent in an application for being a full time nanny and tutor?” She responded with a cheerful voice. “I can’t <i>really</i> go much more in depth without an NDA being signed.”
