Have you ever stood in front of a mirror, and just…
It might start as a passing glance, at first.
You’re on your way out and catch a glimpse of your outfit, turning back to inspect how it falls on you, how the colour compliments your skin tone.
Then, before you know it, ten minutes have somehow passed.
You’re staring into the eyes of the person other people see when they look at you, and you realise…
You don’t know that person.
You’re not the reflection that’s staring back at you. The lids that blink when your eyes dry out. The mouth that moves when you talk. The hands that touch the skin that binds you.
They’re a stranger to you – even though they are you.
It’s a strangely existential thing, I’m reminded in this moment.
The last thing I remember is my brother grinning at me in that usual shit-eating way he does, before he sucker punched me in a grand dick move.
I’ll get him back for that later.
After that… I’m not sure. All I know is I didn’t wake up so much as I was shaken awake. Like, physically.
Someone grabbed me by the shoulders and shook me hard enough to bring me out of the comatose state Chan put me in.
Suffice it to say, I was pretty fucking bewildered when I realised my immediate surroundings. Slumped against the wall of a cold, damp stone corridor, mildew covered rock beneath me, utterly naked and bare for all to see.
I was even more bewildered when I saw who my morning caller was.
“Finally, the princess awakes.”
I blink one more time, rubbing my eyes for good measure as I look up at myself… glaring down at me.
I mean… he looks like me. Red hair, abs to die for and a pout that simply begs to be sat on. He walks like me. Tall and confident, like every step he takes is a testament to the beauty of vampires and the strength of monsters. Even talks like me – with that tone of condescending sarcasm that suggests you’re privileged to even hear a single damn word from a mouth that pretty.
“Language,” he chides, crossing his arms over his chest.
I’m lost for words; I don’t mind admitting.
“I am you, yes,” he nods, inspecting his nails. “A taller, stronger, better-looking version of you, but still – we’re the same.”
“This is impossible,” I shake my head.
“Don’t you know where you are?” He scoffs. “Nothing is impossible down here.”
Fair point. Mors did say as such before they Condemned me.
