🔥 cersei

kinda annoying how people just try to dig and dig and dig for “the reason” she’s a bad person. like I see people try to break down everything that’s influenced her in her life to look for like... the “fixable” element (i.e. “if x hasn’t been a factor then she wouldn’t have been Like This”). like there is so much commentary on societal misogyny and believing-too-much-in-your-shitty-father in cersei’s story, and those things do influence cersei as a character, but guys. sometimes women are just evil. “her mom was killed by tyrion” feels like it goes hand-in-hand with “the dalmatians ran her mom off a cliff”

pretty bold of you to reduce a character into “she was just born a crazy bitch” in a series that is explicitly about how circumstance and choice both shape our characters

the book is really clear that she and Jaime were very very very similar in character, literally indistinguishable, until their upbringings diverged, which means that she was not born evil, which means that something influenced her to do it.

obviously the whole murder and sociopathy thing is bad, but Jaime didn’t end up that way and Cersei did, so it’s reasonable and appropriate to see what changed her.

i don’t know if you follow true crime, OP? i do. And there has never to my knowledge been a case of a child born evil. all of them were failed somehow: by their parents, by their environment, by unfulfilled medical needs. That isn’t to say that one’s innate character doesn’t play a role — obviously it does, or we would be overrun with sociopaths. It only means that every Cersei is a person who didn’t get what they needed to become a good person, and so they got their needs fulfilled in horrible ways.

Every single person has the capacity to be Cersei, and every person has the capacity to be someone selfless and kind. That is one of the major themes of ASOIAF (arguably THE major theme).

Dismissing Cersei as someone who is “just evil” is a major injustice to the character, the books, and to yourself.

my post was saying that cersei was born with the same capacity to make good or evil choices as everyone else was, not that she was “born evil”. I never used those words.

yall see “love” and immediately go to “romantic love” if you translate “love is the whole point” to “romantic love is the whole point” you need to rethink everything because love is found in everything. in community, in friendships, in family, in food, in nature so actually love is the whole point and u can die mad about it. hope this helps <3

it's so important for your health and well-being to get overly attached to a fictional man who is both deeply amoral and unbelievably, pathetically sad
