We’ve got 12 days to go in our LAZARUS - BELIEVE HER campaign we’re running through Bonfire. We’ve sold 75 shirts as of this writing and now have raised over $800 for RAINN - so, yeah, you guys are amazeballs.

Shirts are available in a variety of styles and colors, all with Michael Lark’s art and the straightforward message “Believe Her.”

Any support for our campaign is appreciated, be it through purchase, reblog, or just emailing links to your friends.

Thank you from all of us on Team Lazarus!

CROWDED - Ongoing from Image Comics - 1st issue out August 15th

Ten minutes in the future, the world runs on an economy of job shares and apps, including Reapr: a crowdfunding platform to fund assassinations. Charlie Ellison leads a quiet, normal life until she’s suddenly targeted by a million-dollar Reapr campaign. Hunted by all of Los Angeles, Charlie hires Vita, the lowest-rated bodyguard on the Dfend app. As the campaign picks up speed, they’ll have to figure out who wants Charlie dead before the campaign’s 30 days—or their lives—are over.

From Eisner-nominated writer Christopher Sebela (Heartthrob, We(l)come Back, Harley Quinn), Ro Stein & Ted Brandt (Captain Marvel, Raven: The Pirate Princess), Triona Farrell (Runaways, Mech Cadet Yu), and CARDINAL RAE (Bingo Love, Rose).

It’s been a while since I’ve tumbled, but I have a comic to promote... or in this case SELF promote!

CROWDED is my first foray into the creator side of comics-ing. I’m editing this book and I couldn’t be more proud of the team or excited for everyone to see it!

Issue #1 is out Wednesday August 15th! Please give it a try!

Bay Area WicDiv Support Group - #29

Do you love The Wicked + The Divine? Do you need help processing your feelings when new issues come out? Do you want to find like-minded people to talk to? Are you in the San Francisco Bay Area?

Come hang out at a WicDiv Support Group!

Really this is a fan meetup by any other name. WicDiv is fun as a social experience and we share it by meeting the weekend after every new issue is released.

This week it's issue #29. The last arc left us with some pretty stressful revelations about the gods and three factions. Plus someone got a little upset and THINGS HAPPENED. So this issue is bound to answer the question of what these terrible magical teens do next...

Be prepared to talk about anything WicDiv through the newest release and to just generally hang out.

If you want to meet some enthusiastic WicDiv nerds and have a good time, possibly with crying, come hang out with us!

MY PULL LIST - 06/28

There are a lot of good books out this week, but for my money (literally) the week belongs to Greg Rucka, Nicola Scott, and Liam Sharp. The incredible WONDER WOMAN run they started together is wrapping up today and BLACK MAGICK, one of my top five favorite comics, is coming back with a Liam Sharp B cover. I love the timing here and I love their comics!

But it’s not actually all about them, so here’s my whole pull list.

BLACK MAGICK #6
UNDERWINTER #4
MOTHER PANIC #8
WONDER WOMAN #25
DEFENDERS #2
DOCTOR APHRA #8
SAGA #44

That’s the list. As always, ask if you have any questions about these titles. Happy New Comic Book Day!

Hold it...

I know that WicDiv B covers often have an alternate back cover quote, but 455′s A cover has multiple back covers? Has this been a thing before?

I am delighted that this passed for an actual legit back cover! Especially as I threw it together in photoshop over a lunch break at work and printed it on our store printer.

But no, as Kieron explained in the replies to the OP, this was a very silly present I made for my coworker as a joke. Definitely not officially sanctioned by any part of Team WicDiv.

This picture shows you some of the blemishes, how I forgot to include a bar code, etc. Still, for a rush job I don’t hate it. :)

HULK #7
STAR WARS #32
QUANTUM TEENS ARE GO #4

Have a happy New Comic Book Day.

We'll be meeting to discuss the 455 one-shot issue. It's WicDiv plus the fall of Rome... what could possibly go wrong?

MY PULL LIST - 05/10

Hey look, a pull list post! It’s almost like FCBD has passed and I’m suddenly not a sentient ball of stress anymore, so I have time to share (and read) the comics I’m picking up. I swear some day I’ll maintain these. Maybe. Possibly. Probably not.

Here’s my pull list for this week.

WONDER WOMAN #22 - Diana on a charity date. Veronica continues her planning. It’s funny and good and sad in context and guest artist Mirka Andolfo does a great job bringing a fun, different tone to the book without getting in the way of the emotional build that’s been building in the GODWATCH story. Also, A+ name cameo that made me smile. I adore this book!
SHADE THE CHANGING GIRL #8 - Loma skips out on her borrowed teenage life and explores Gotham. This is fun and sad and very, very odd. And beautiful! Kelly Fitzpatrick’s colors are so strong in this whole series!
ALL STAR BATMAN #10 - The first story focuses on Alfred and gave me so many unexpected feelings... and then the pirate stuff started happening. I love, LOVE historical pirates and Scott Snyder does a great job of bringing one in! Plus I just love Raphael Albuquerque with Jordie Bellaire! Such beautiful art.
AMERICA #3 - America is off to save her ex-girlfriend, Lisa, but she gets stuck with some X-Men from a different time. And gets stuck addressing her FEELINGS, which unfortunately she can’t just punch past.
MISFIT CITY #1 - A brand new series, this book follows four young women in a town mostly known as the location of the film Gloomies (definitely not Goonies) who wind up accidentally finding adventure. It’s fun, it’s funny, it’s super cute, and I already have a crush on one of the characters. It’s Macy. The one with the hat. Because of course. Lots of fun!
STAR WARS: SCREAMING CITADEL #1 - OH. MY. GOSH. I absolutely LOVE the first issue of this crossover! I knew I was going to like it, but I. Love. It. It hits every note I hoped for, it has fun surprises, and it just keeps getting better as the issue goes on. Plus it’s absolutely full of problematic fave potential. And, and, and, my space girlfriend, Aphra, plays young Luke like a fiddle to get him to come with her. I'm VERY HAPPY with this!

There you go. My pull list. I did it! As always, ask if you want to know more about any of these titles.

Happy New Comic Book Day!

MY PULL LIST - 04/12

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Is this... is this me posting my pull list? Is this me posting my pull list BEFORE Wednesday? How utterly unexpected! A few irl things have calmed down enough for me to attempt this again. Wish me luck.

Here’s my pull list for the week.

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #28 - We all know how well ends of WicDiv arcs go at this point, right? RIGHT? Hahaha, this is fine. Everything's fine. It's fine. Shut up, it's fine. (Any mental clarity I have here is being spent on how fucking amazing the Elsa Charretier and Matt Wilson cover is because I’m actually obsessed. The issue’s amazing as usual, but that cover... man oh man. It’s gorgeous from a nerdy craft perspective with all its curving lines and its geometric color shapes. And also it doesn’t make me want to cry or rage, unlike certain actual issues of this very upsetting comic, so that’s another plus I guess? Just go look at it!)
WE(L)COME BACK vol. 2 - I love this comic! I mean, I LOOOOVE. This. Comic. It’s been approximately a million years since volume 1 came out and I can’t wait to make everyone read the second half. It’s where the reincarnated queer lady assassins’ forbidden love adventure really kicks up the feelings and there’s so much action. Also, issue 6 is in here and it was my favorite single issue comic of last year, hands down. PLUS, this volume includes my creepy old murder lady alter ego. It’s great! I love it! I miss it! Time to reread it!
WONDER WOMAN #20 - The Godwatch arc of Wonder Woman’s story has really felt like a mythological horror story and I’m super here for that! Bilquis Evely continues to be an incredible artist. I’m such a fan of how she draws Diana and everyone around her. I always grab WONDER WOMAN to read first on my Tuesdays because I know, I KNOW, it’s going to make me feel strong and good and excited.
RAT QUEENS #2 - The Queens are once again in a tight spot, this time with the added presence of their super unnecessary dude counterparts. Man, I love seeing these girls again! RAT QUEENS is back and ridiculous and violent and foul and fun.
DOCTOR APHRA #6 - Last issue was just betrayal after betrayal and... I kinda loved it. As I love everything about Aphra! The stakes are high, but the book still manages to feel like she and her dad are on a fun space adventure. I’m always here for my super amoral space girlfriend! <3
MOTOR CRUSH #5 - Who is the dude in the helmet? What’s actually up with Domino and the Crush? I feel like issue 4 is when I got real into the scifi plot of this book and I honestly can’t wait to see what’s going on. Domino, man. I worry about her!
THE COMPLETE PHONOGRAM - Oh... oh PHONOGRAM. This damn comic makes me feel called out in public every time I read it, mostly because it’s full of such utterly unlikable characters whose stories and magic and metaphor still feel like they explain a core part of me. It’s so annoying! I love this series and I already wrote a whole big emotional thing when the final issue of IMMATERIAL GIRL came out, so I’ll spare everyone here. What’s extra exciting about this hardcover is that it includes ALL THE B-SIDES! If you didn’t read the book as it was coming out in single issues you didn’t get the short stories with guest artists in the back of every issue. I love the B-Sides as much as I love the main stories, so getting them all in one place is a special thing. The hardcover is also the first time we’re seeing RUE BRITANNIA (the first arc) in full Matt Wilson colors. I have incredibly mixed feelings about this and am also brimming with excitement to see the choices he made. The previews look like it’s a real combination of his current coloring and some stylistic stuff that was happening when the book was originally drawn. I’m chomping at the bit to dig into the color choices in particular. PHONOGRAM! I LOVE IT!

And that’s it. I did it! An actual proper pull list post. Hurrah!

As always, let me know if you have further questions about any of the books. Happy reading.

So About That Whole Thing

LONG COMIC BOOK RANT INCOMING:

Okay some things need to be said:

1. If you’re going to write a smug thunk-piece about the “failure” of “diversity” in comics, maybe don’t use the cover image of a book that’s had 4 collections on the NYT graphic books bestseller list, won a Hugo and cleaned up at Angouleme. Just because you HOPE it’s on the chopping block, oh Riders of the Brohirrim, doesn’t mean it is.

2. I will tell you exactly why Ms Marvel works: it didn’t set out to be Ms Marvel. We were originally going to pitch it as a 10 issue limited series. I had a 3 issue exit strategy because I assumed we were going to get canned. There was no “diversity initiative” anywhere–getting that thing made at all was a struggle. It was a given that any character without AT LEAST a 20-year history would tank. Everybody, myself included, assumed this series was going to work out the same way.

3. That freed us–by “us” I mean the whole creative team–to tell exactly the story we wanted to tell. We had nothing to lose, nothing to overcome but low expectations. That gave us room to break a lot of rules.

STUFF THAT IS DIFFICULT TO REPLICATE AND IMPOSSIBLE TO PLAN:

1. Unexpected audiences. We are at a point in history when the role of religion is at a tremendous inflection point. What I didn’t realize was that the anxieties felt by young Muslims are also felt by young Mormons, evangelicals, orthodox Jews, and others. A h-u-g-e reason Ms Marvel has struck the chord it has is because it deals with the role of traditionalist faith in the context of social justice, and there was–apparently–an untapped audience of people from a wide variety of faith backgrounds who were eager for a story like this. Nobody could have predicted or planned for that. That’s being in the right place at the right time with the right story burning a hole in your pocket. Plenty of other stuff I’ve written and liked has fallen with a huge thud. That’s the norm. Exceptions are great when they happen, but hard to plan.

2. The paradox of low expectations. The bar was set pretty low for Ms Marvel, but because of Ms Marvel’s success, that bar got set much higher for similar books that came later.

STUFF THAT IS ENTIRELY AVOIDABLE:

1. This is a personal opinion, but IMO launching a legacy character by killing off or humiliating the original character sets the legacy character up for failure. Who wants a legacy if the legacy is shitty?

2. Diversity as a form of performative guilt doesn’t work. Let’s scrap the word diversity entirely and replace it with authenticity and realism. This is not a new world. This is *the world.*

3. Never try to be the next whoever. Be the first and only you. People smell BS a mile away.

4. The direct market and the book market have diverged. Never the twain shall meet. We need to accept this and move on, and market accordingly.

5. Not for nothing, but there is a direct correlation between the quote unquote “diverse” Big 2 properties that have done well (Luke Cage, Black Panther, Ms Marvel, Batgirl) and properties that have A STRONG SENSE OF PLACE. It’s not “diversity” that draws those elusive untapped audiences, it’s *particularity.* This is a vital distinction nobody seems to make. This goes back to authenticity and realism.

AND FINALLY

On a practical level, this is not really a story about “diversity” at all. It’s a story about the rise of YA comics. If you look at it that way, the things that sell and don’t sell (AND THE MARKETS THEY SELL IN VS THE MARKETS THEY DON’T SELL IN) start to make a different kind of sense.
