If mulder felt so guilty about taking scully away from a normal life, why did he keep her around. That’s very selfish of him.

statements like this ignore scully’s desires and agency completely, and i find that distasteful at best and sexist outright at worst. she chose repeatedly to follow mulder when he literally ran, and when he tried to split away from her. and once she too had lost things to the conspiracy, she was, herself, personally invested. other than a few things she said, none of scully’s actions during the original run showed any interest in “a normal life” — just a desire to be safe from government experiments on her body and those of her family. she didn’t show any interest in a normal life until iwtb, and she literally enjoyed working on the x files again in the revival, so that seems to have been short lived.

and, conspiracy and aliens and trauma aside, scully chose to work for the fbi. she chose forensic pathology as her medical specialty. she chose curiosity. she went into science to learn everything she could, and then she stuck with the x files over and over — not just because of mulder, but because her work on these unexplained cases allowed her to learn more about things that science had not yet explained. and then, she got to use science to explain them, all the while saving lives and helping people. and she got to do it all alongside her best friend, who both supported her and challenged her intellectually, as she fell in love with him.

throughout the original run, mulder literally canonically has this guilt complex, this belief that he’s being selfish and harmful towards scully by “keeping her from a normal life”. it’s what causes him to run off without her repeatedly, and to attempt suicide by death penalty in the truth. but this belief of his isn’t true or based in reality. it assumes three things: that she has no agency, that she’s a normal person who wants a “normal life”, and that he is the center of the universe and the cause of all misfortune in the world. that belief that you’re talking about, anon, and his attempts to act on it, are his only expressions of egotistical selfishness.

Monica comes over to her house one morning with a sack full of tangerines and a lemon peel smile. 

“This house is so spooky, Dana,” she says, stopping in the doorway to let the facial recognition camera do its thing. “It’s like you’re living inside a robot.” 

“It seems to like you,” Scully says. There’s a soft metallic hum throughout the house; it calms down, the lights dim. 

“Maybe it’s reading my aura,” the other woman says brightly. She leans in, kisses the corner of Scully’s mouth, and thrusts the sack of oranges into her hands. 

There’s something so pleasant about having Monica come to her place. Perhaps her girlfriend wasn’t so far off the mark, and the house knew, just like she did, that Monica didn’t so much light up the room as she did stabilize it. A flickering bulb in the living room finds the courage to ease into its rightful end. 

The kettle turns on without any prompting. From the cupboards, Monica pulls out the tea. 

Five sentence prompt: You shouldn’t try so hard to make me like you.

“I’m not trying,” she says, voice light. She reaches over and squeezes Scully’s arm. “I think you just like me.” 

Scully pulls away. “I don’t need you to be Mulder.” 

“I’m not trying to be Mulder,” Reyes says, her voice soft. “I’m just trying to be here for you.” 

Reyes crouched in front of Scully and tilted her head, a curious smile crossing her lips.

“What, Reyes?” Scully said, but she didn’t get an answer as Reyes leaned in and kissed her. 

It’s quick, and Scully found herself wishing it wasn’t. It’s not that she didn’t love Mulder, she did, but Mulder wasn’t here. 

And Reyes was. And Reyes made her feel like Mulder felt, with her earnestness and wild ideas, with the intent way she stared at Scully, a way up until now Scully had just brushed off as curiosity. 

So she leaned in and kissed Reyes back.

The toddler hair is... not good. Early season 2 is a bad hair season for both Mulder and Scully. It gets MUCH better towards the end!

I quickly took screenshots of hair that I know annoys me - these might not be the worst, these are just the ones I remember.

Ascension Mulder might be the worst of them all. What is this? It’s what I call the “hedgehog haircut”. He gets it again (!) in later seasons...
