Major Sholto's Medals

To get a bit more insight into Major Sholto’s life and military service, I decided to try and identify the medals he wears to John’s wedding. I’m by no means an expert, so if you feel anything is inaccurate please let me know, but I believe most of them are correct.

There’s a lot you can surmise from knowing that little bit more about his background, and in doing this I’ve realised what an absolutely overwhelmingly important role military service must have played in his life, which makes his reclusive nature after leaving military service in a storm of media backlash much more understandable, and also much more tragic in a lot of ways.

From left to right:

Victoria Cross The highest military decoration awarded for valour. Personally I think Sholto having one of these is a bit over the top and unrealistic, the Military Cross is much more likely.

Northern Ireland General Service Medal Awarded to personnel involved in operations in Northern Ireland.

UN Medal for Operations in Yugoslavia (UNPROFOR) Awarded from 1992-1996 to service people involved in peacekeeping and the resolution of the Yugoslavia crisis. The ribbon is back to front on the medal Sholto is wearing. There’s a possibility the medal he’s wearing could be the one for service in Croatia, but as the other stripe isn’t visible, it’s difficult to tell.

NATO Former Republic of Yugoslavia Medal Similar to the UN medal, but for service linked to NATO.

Iraq Campaign Service Medal Authorised from 2004 onwards, and awarded for either 30 days consecutive service in Iraq (or Iraqi territorial waters), 45 days cumulative.

Operational Service Medal for Afghanistan This type of operational medal is awarded for either 5, 21, or 30 days continuous service between various dates in Afghanistan.

Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal Awarded to British Military personnel who had completed at least 5 years of qualifying service in 2002.

Accumulated Campaign Service Medal Awarded to service people for long service on campaign. Recognising repeat operational service of 1080 days of cumulative campaign service (up to 2011).

Long Service and Good Conduct Medal Awarded by the British Government to service members who have completed 15 years of reckonable service.

Feel free to add any more details, as obviously since these would likely be down to the costuming department in the show, there may be some inaccuracies.
