someone’s back in town...

So a little over a year ago I joined the studyblr community here on tumblr! It’s been a rocky road but I want to reintroduce myself, especially because I’ve been on hiatus for a while, due to stress, personal reasons and a nerve-wracking application process. Oh boy, well here we go!

I am a high school senior who is very excited to be going to college next year! (Let’s hear it for the class of 2022!!!) I’m from New York City, but will be studying in Boston as of next fall. And while I’m undecided I have an indescribable love for literature and philosophy!

Here’s a few facts about me:

  • My zodiac is Saggitaius
  • I have two sphynx cats, one is old and a tuxedo cat the other is a 7 month old kitten and he’s a Harlequin cat.
  • My first language was Russian, but I am now fully trilingual in English, Russian and Spanish. And I’m now studying Korean!
  • Slytherin proud and true!!
  • I always wondered what @studyblr had to do to get their URL. I swear they probably sold their soul to the devil.
  • I absolutely love making new friends so please slide into my DMs and lmk what’s good in your life
  • I’m lowkey highkey a fan of dramas

I would do that classic spam a bunch of studyblrs who are more known than me thing, but those that matter know who they are.

Also if you’re one of the people who spammed me while I was on hiatus honestly I want to buy you pizza cause you knew me while I was dead!!! You guys are (at least the ones tumblr notified me about, if you’re not here the email was eaten by the void): @slytherintostudy @cosmos-studies @artjournalmv @georgiastudiesstuff @sarahlovesstudying

That’s about it. I’ll start posting as soon as I have good content again. CTStudies is back!!

some studyblr maths

aesthetics ≠ productivity content > handwriting cramming < revising studying - procrastination = hard work hard work + commitment = success success < happiness

*remember* don’t overwork yourself, it’s not worth sacrificing all of your happiness for grades and success

Maximize your sleeping time (aka how to be a lazy asshole and sleep in)

Would you prefer waking up at 7:50 than at 7? Or maybe you’re a Tired College Student™ like me who’s in their second semester just waiting for the sweet release of death? Either way, today I’m going to be v non-studyblr and show you how you too can be a lazy asshole and sleep in.

  • Lay out your clothes the night before. If you feel like trash sweater + leggins takes 2 mins to put on and feels like PJs
  • If you shower at night just sleep in your leggins tbh.
  • If you have bangs do them the night before and sleep on your back. If you can’t keep still wear headphones bc they’ll keep you from turning. It’s better for your back anyway.
  • Brush your hair before bed and tie it up so that it’s faster to brush in the morning.
  • Tbh smoothing the ends and the top layer works just as well.
  • Get a Tangle Teezer. It’ll save you so much time.
  • If you plan on using dry shampoo, do It the night before. It’ll absorb way more oil and you just have to brush it and go in the morning.
  • If you wear makeup, have all your basics in one easy to reach place.
  • If you take the bus or sth just do your makeup there.
  • If you need to wet your beauty blender, carry a mini spray bottle of water in your makeup bag.
  • Carry rollerballs of perfume in your backpack so that you don’t have to waste time putting it on.
  • Have your fucking backpack ready the night before.
  • Have a designated place near the door for the shit you need to carry (keys, glasses, USBs, idk). If you know what shoes you’re gonna wear, put them in front of the door and leave everything you need inside of them.
  • Putting on a coat is faster if it’s hung on a chair than if it’s hung on a hanger.
  • Breakfast is essential. Doesn’t mean you can’t just take it with you and eat it during break or on your way to school.
  • Make it the night before and put it in the fridge if it’’s temperature sensitive. Avocado toast can be turned into a mess free sandwich js. Also you can make overnight oats in a mason jar and take them with you.
  • Same with coffee. Honestly at this point just carry a bottle of it in your backpack. It lasts for like three days.

And that’s how to be a Slightly More Rested Mess. I realize this is not for everyone but hey, desperate times call for desperate meassures.

It’s that time of year again, August is wrapping up and we are all preparing to go  back to class. Whether you are a freshman or a senior it is a nerve-wracking experience. So here’s my advice (advice from a rising senior! Let’s see what I have to say...)

SUPPLIES

Unless your school is the type to give a universal list of supplies chances are you won’t need 300 notebooks on day one. This is what I usually bring on the first day:

  • Notebook
  • Few pens/pencils
  • Planner/BUJO (cause when am I ever without a bujo?)
  • Backpack

Recommendations

  1. For general supplies I use Muji. They have quality stuff at a decent price, plus they are beyond aesthetic. (Gotta have pleasing supplies….)
  2. Planner/Bujo: This is where I don’t really have a preference. Last school year I used a soft cover dotted Moleskine, for this year I just order a hardcover Leuchtturm 1917 journal. However if you are the type that doesn’t want/have the time to make your own spreads I highly recommend using Passion Planner. They have multiple types (the academic one is the best in my opinion.) PP is good quality with premade spread (WHAT A STEAL)
  3. Pens/Markers/Pencils: Let’s start with this: MUJI. They have wonderful supplies like I already said, good stuff good stuff. But hey, what about specific things? Mildliners, Stabilo Boss (Pastel) Highlighters, Staedtler Fine Point Pens, Gelly Roll Gel Pens, Artline Stix Markers, Tombow Brush Pens. But at the end of the day, everything works!
  4. I used to change my backpack every year, but ever since I discovered the Fjallraven Kanken bag I stuck with it. It’s a pretty durable bag with a bunch of space. The only negative is that there are not really that many pockets, so everything pretty much goes into the big compartment.

MUSIC

My school has a pretty liberal policy when it comes to phones. As long as the teacher allows it we can use our phones in class, and even occasionally have headphones on so here are some study music recommendations.

LoFi:

This is a good playlist/station. These guys are lifesavers, they broadcast LIVE 24/7. LITERALLY NONSTOP MUSIC. It’s nice and chill, very nice to study to.

I am currently self studying Korean so I’ve been listening to a lot of Korean music, and since I figured it’s a trend around here so I’m including it.

  • KWON JI YONG (G-Dragon): This EP is so dope, the first half gets you really pumped and then it gets more calm. The only thing is GD has weird pronunciation so don’t use this to learn or practice Korean. I learned the hard way!
  • THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MOMENT IN LIFE (BTS): This isn’t my favorite album, but I love the OUTRO song, especially the middle part!!!
  • EXO/EXO-CBX: Honestly everything with these guys is great, but highly recommend the newest album by EXO, THE WAR. I also like using this album for Korean studies, because their pronunciation (unlike GD’s, sorry GD stans) is quite good and it’s good for practice.

At the end of the day, any music is good music so listen to what you like!! But make sure you’re not distracted from your work (like I am during Ko Ko Bop…)

MISC ADVICE

  1. Do not put off work. It’s so much easier to handle school when you do you assignments the night they are assigned, and projects the first weekend you have them. Not only does this ensure little stress, if anything is wrong you will most likely have time to revise.
  2. Start thinking about college early. This is something I didn’t do and highly regret. Visit colleges as early as second half of freshmen year. This way you are prepared when you have to apply, but this will also keep college at the front of your mind. I disagree with people who say that you shouldn’t worry about college until junior year. Keeping college in your mind will allow you to stay motivated and work hard. Set a goal school and work towards it. I WISH so much that someone told freshman me to worry about college because I started worrying a little too late.
  3. SAT/ACT: Take the PSAT as early as you can. This will help you decide which test you are more suited for. Do a mock test of the ACT as well, time yourself and see which score is higher. I then recommend to take either of the tests your junior year. I took the ACT four times, most people take one of the exams about 2-3 times. Don’t forget that superscoring is a thing, some colleges will allow you to the highest mark of each section and combine them. Also don’t worry if you aren’t in the range colleges say their accepted students had. This is only the mid 50%, there are people who got lower scores and got in and people with higher scores who also got in.
  4. Go see your teachers whenever you can. You will need recommendation letters for applications at some point so work on your relationships with your teachers. If you have a class you particularly like, get close to the teacher. Go talk to them after school. High school is slightly different in this sense, you can have a friendly relationship with your teacher. (I even go to talk about Game of Thrones with my 10th grade English teacher.)
  5. Electives are also important! Of course everyone has to take the core classes, but showing interest in other areas is just as important. Colleges are looking for students who have interests and those who will make their communities diverse. So if you’re interested in art, take art classes and so on!
  6. Most importantly, have fun! School is stressful, and there is just so much anxiety involved with it. Take time to take care of yourself. Go out with friends, go to parties (but don’t do anything that will get you in trouble). If you need to take a break, take the day off. Your mental and social health are just as important as your studies. We studyblrs seem to have no lives outside of studying and I hate that. HAVE FUN, remember that this is the only time you will be in high school so enjoy it. Go do crazy stupid things, because why not?! (Great advice…) Just remember to be safe :)

Good luck to everyone on the upcoming 2017/2018 school year. As for my fellow seniors, we are almost there guys, this is the final push, the sprint right before the end of the race. Congrats on making it this far. And my freshmen, welcome to high school!

Hey I'm also a high school junior. How'd your year go? Did you take SAT's yet if so were they good for you? Anyways have a good day!

Well my year was..... interesting?? Too many APs at once!😂 I took the PSAT my sophmore year and a second time beginning of senior. I did average, wasn’t good, wasn’t bad. So I decided to go with the ACT, I felt more comfortable with it. But honestly, they are pretty similar I think... Oh well! 😌✨

Advice for high school FRESHMAN

You’ve just transitioned from middle school to high school! There’s going to be a lot of terminology and schedule changes you’re not familiar with. Here’s a quick breakdown of terms and other things you need to know:

   1.  AP Exams (Advanced Placement exams). These are college-level tests that are administered after you complete an AP course. Depending on the college, you may be able to use these credits to skip classes in college!

   2. “Double mod” or “Double period lunch”. Chances are, you’re going to have a day in the week where your lunch is used as a lab period. These are usually for bio, chem, envi-sci, physics, and sometimes comp sci. Other classes may do this as well!

   3.  Digital Notes- You may be allowed to use your laptop/tablet to take notes!

   4.  SAT/ACT- Standardized tests  that you should start preparing for in freshman year! More on that later.

   5.  SAT Subject Tests-More specific standardized tests that will also be discussed later.

These are kind of the big ones that I didn’t know about when I was a freshman. Honestly, I’m compiling a list of things I WISH I KNEW when I was a freshman.

     1. Grades matter!!! People will tell you that grades don’t really matter in your first year, especially the first quarter. DON’T LISTEN TO THEM, THAT IS A LIE. Don’t completely disregard your social life and definitely don’t forget to take care of your mental health, but do put some effort into your freshman year grades.

     2. It’s okay to be thinking about college during your first year. Actually, I highly recommend it. Try to narrow down your potential college interest to a subject (science, math, arts) so you can slowly stack up classes in that area!

     3. Keep your notes! You don’t know when you’re going to need them down the line!

     4. Start making good relationships with your teachers 😊 Chances are, during senior year when you need hundreds of recommendations, your freshman teachers will have a nostalgic and fun time writing you one!

     5. Slowly start studying for the SAT and ACT exams! These are very important if you want to get into college/university. ACT has a science section (along with math and English/reading) while SAT does without science. Buy a practice book for both the SAT and ACT and fiddle around with both until you find which test you prefer. Then focus on that specific one and practice!

     6. Try to make your GPA great from the beginning 😊 If you’re aiming for competitive colleges, they want to see good grades (coupled with challenging courses!)

     7. Do LOTS of activities. Don’t let go of all the hobbies/sports you enjoy doing! Not only will you be happy, you will have a great application for colleges to see.

     8. Start volunteering to not only make your application beautiful, but also to become a better person!

     9. Don’t be afraid to aim high. It’s okay to be the different student and have goals while being a freshman. Don’t let other people make you think otherwise.

     10. Become great friends with the other staff people (office ladies, secretaries, etc.) You will feel so much more comfortable in a school surrounded by people who greet you in a familiar manner!

I hope this helps! I certainly wish I had something like this when I first started high school. I’ll be making sophomore, junior, and senior spinoffs, so get ready! I hope everyone is having a great April so far! Shoutout to my sister for making this header for me!!!
