How about how Mai would benefit from Zutara?

Avatar

What Mαi would Gain from Zutara

Mαi would gain the opportunity to date aboy who makes her smile:

Who shares her disdain for politics:

And whom she really seems to likemore than Zuko.

She would be free of any ties to theroyal family

And could go off on her own adventure

Where she wouldn’t be stifled by thepalace and her parents.

Mαi:  I was a rich only child who got anything I wanted. As long as I behaved … and sat still…and didn’t speak unless spoken to. My mother said I had to keep out of trouble.  We had my Dad’s politicalcareer to think about.

The burden of providing the Firelordwith an heir would no longer fall on her

Which is probably for the best.

And she wouldn’t spend hour afterhour, befuddled

Mαi: Zuko, what is wrong with you?! Yourtemper’s out of control. You blow up over every little thing. You’re soimpatient and hot-headed and angry.

While her boyfriend is undergoing ametamorphosis that she doesn’t, and may never, understand.

Zuko: When I got to the meeting, everyone welcomedme.  My father had saved me a seat. He wanted me next to him. Iwas literally at his right hand. Mαi: Zuko, that’s wonderful.  You must be happy? Zuko: During the meeting, I was the perfect prince. The son my father wanted. But I wasn’t me.

She would get the opportunity to livefor herself

And not have her life decisionsrevolve around Zuko.

And most of all, she would be free toassociate with people who get her:

Zuko: I saw it and Ithought it was pretty. Don’t girls like stuff like this?

Instead of a boyfriend who is asconfused by her as she is by him …

Zuko: Well, at least I feel something…as opposed toyou. You have no passion for anything.  You’re just a big“blah”.

Will never trust or open up to herthe way she wants …

Mαi: All I get is a letter. You could have at least looked me in the eye when you ripped out my heart.

And just isn’t that into her.

Azula: The thing I don’t understand is why. Why would you doit? You know the consequences.

(Meanwhile … )

Zuko: My sister was on that island. Sokka: Yeah and she’s probably right behind us. So let’s not stop. Zuko: What I mean is she must have come here somehow. That’s our way outof here.

(On the other hand … )

Sorry, Mαi.

Zuko TOOK A LIGHTNING for KATARA

because he DOESN’T CARE about her

I am like, nothing short of absolutely disgusted at Bryke's portrayal of Katara in the comics and TLOK???

And apparently a majority of the audience is okay with this portrayal??

Just a recap:

This is Katara

A girl with severe abandonment issues because her mom was murdered by a Fire Nation soldier and soon after her dad left to fight in the war, leaving her alone to take care of her brother and the village.

This is Aang

A boy with chronic running away issues. This fault of his has led to a war extending up to 100 years causing death and destruction all around the world.

Katara does not acknowledge this fault of his because she idolises him as the Avatar but still his actions hurt her. A lot.

Katara: It's not brave, it's selfish and stupid! We could be helping him and I know the world needs him, but doesn't he know how much we need him, too? How can he just leave us behind?

Logically speaking, a person with abandonment issues should never be with a person who has a tendency to run away from their issues. But Aang and Katara get together anyway.

But then the comics happen.

Literally anyone who cared about Katara as a character of her own (and not just as Aang's love interest) was infuriated at how she was portrayed. She was stripped of all her autonomy and characterization and was made into "The Avatar's Girlfriend". Nothing of her own.

Some people actually call this relationship sweet. Yuck.

But the thing is, it has panels like this:

Katara, the girl with abandonment issues looks— that's right, abandoned and forgotten.

Even if the "abandonment issues" angle is thrown out of the window, the above panel from Katara's pov is a very unhealthy and shitty experience. (I can vouch with personal experience)

When you clearly don't have anyone else and the one person who you completely dedicate yourself to is completely avoiding you in favour of other people who don't really matter that much just because it makes them feel better/superior, how lonely and abandoned does that make you feel?

Also this sort of behaviour is undeniably selfish and self centred.

This problem of "Aang paying more attention to fangirls" exists in the show as well but atleast Aang corrects his behaviour or accepts that it was incorrect. The comics however:

Katara, who was abandoned, ignored and lonely in this entire comic is reasonably upset about this. But instead of the comic validating her feelings, it makes her feel guilty???

What the fuck??

If this isn't a fulfilment of the male fetish of gfs/wives putting their own mental issues and feelings on a back bench just for the sake of the man's hApPineSs, then what is this?

Not to mention this fetish is pretty disgusting.

This is what young kids are supposed to learn form the comics?

This is harmful for boys AND girls.

But sure couple goals and soulmates or whatever.

Moving on,

The very existence of LOK!Katara is just—

Like what—?

This definitely isn't the Katara I know and love.

Katara, who was completely devastated by her mother's death but got her shit together immediately and seamlessly slipped into the role of her mother and was so damn good at it that her elder brother could conveniently use his coping mechanism to supress their mother's memories with Katara's instead.

You're telling me this same girl grew up to be a sad old lonely widow who spent her days and nights wallowing in the grief of the death of her husband—

Bullshit.

That's straight up romanticization of "life is nothing without you" trope where the wife just becomes a non-functional person after the death of her husband. That, and Bryke not giving a shit about Katara's character.

There's the evident drama of Aang ignoring his two other kids in favour of the Airbending one; leaving Katara with the other two kids. Just like how she was left alone in charge of things as a child.

And then there's this:

They actually take the time to show us that Katara is sad and lonely and abandoned??

What family does she have left at the South pole? None.

And yet, people manage to think Katara is perfectly fine and happy.

Katara, a person with severe abandonment issues spends her entire life being abandoned??

What the fuck Bryke?

Like, it's pretty clear that they didn't give two shits about Katara as a character; she was just supposed to be a pretty arm candy for the Hero™ with some handy dandy waterbending abilities.

But if other people have done a spectacular job of turning this cardboard character into a fully fleshed out, multi dimensional character, why would you throw it away??

Like, that's just dumb.

Why would they take an infinite number of steps back to turn Katara back into a cardboard character and fulfil romanticized misogynistic tropes?

Much wow, many thanks.

  1. Lois Lane - Earth-2 #1 Killed to drive Superman’s story, later revived as a robot, then bisected in Earth-2: Futures End #1, and killed again in Futures End #30 in the Cadmus Island story arc.
  2. Selina Kyle (Catwoman) - Worlds’ Finest #0 Brutally killed to progress the story of both her…

Dear god. How the hell is this “misogyny in comics”? There is quite literally just as many male characters if not more, who are killed or mutilated in the same fashion as these women. Not to mention the fact that some of DC’s best selling comics right now star women! Just look at Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Worlds’ Finest, and Wonder Woman. Not to mention the fact that DC is constantly compensating for the characters they off or remove temporarily, especially the women. I mean these last few months alone we’ve seem the debut of Donna Troy and Stephanie Brown as well as Harper Row’s inaugural stint as the hero BlueBird (oh look an original female superhero! DC apparently knows ho to do this but Marvel doesn’t).

Killing or maiming a character is a story telling technique used to further the plot, is it sometimes over used by DC? Yeah they’ve used it too much sometimes in the past but you can’t deny that in the last 3 years DC has been hammering out killer stories like Justice League Origins, Throne of Atlantis, Night of the Owls, Death of the Family, Gorilla Warfare, Trinity War and even the controversial Forever Evil.

And if you plan on using your cherry picked cases of women being hurt in comics (which would make them equal to male comic characters wouldn’t it?) to somehow justify how DC is shit then first of all, screw you for using bullshit minority cases to try and show why a hobby someone enjoys is wrong and “misogynistic”. Secondly, Marvel is worse then DC (if that’s the narrative you’re pushing) in comic sales right now, this probably has to do with the immense pandering Marvel is doing right now what with Lady Thor and black Captain America.

tl;dr: Comics are in no way misogynistic, and you trying to say they are is honestly pathetic as it’s clear you know very little about DC or the New 52.

Mansplaining For Dummies

Your step-by-step guide on how to use your privilege to talk over disadvantaged members of society having an important discussion on a real issue that directly affects them, but does little more than create internalised prejudice in the aforementioned privileged individual. This guide offers tips like how to use dyscalculia and derailment tactics to invalidate points made by disadvantaged individuals, and polish your rightness on the virtue of having privilege. This guide also offers examples on how to use each of these steps so that you can become a successful Class-A Mansplainer! Let’s begin!

Step 01: Begin every tone deaf counterargument with a logical fallacy of sorts—like ignoring the differences in the way male and female deaths are depicted in narratives—by suggesting that if Character A and Character B have ‘DEAD!’ in common that the circumstances surrounding that common factor are the same.

Example: ‘Dear god. How the hell is this “misogyny in comics”? There is quite literally just as many male characters if not more, who are killed or mutilated in the same fashion as these women.'

Step 02: Continue to demonstrate your cluelessness on a given issue through math. In this case, be sure to note that out of 20 of DC’s best selling titles, 3 titles starring women + 17 titles starring/co-starring men = EQUILIBRIUM! Be sure to ignore the lack of effort on DC’s part to salvage female-fronted titles (including ones fronted by queer women and queer women of colour), and in one case, even outright trading two female characters for the two most overexposed male characters at DC. By not acknowledging that latter fact, you help strengthen your tone deaf counterargument.

Example: 'Not to mention the fact that some of DC’s best selling comics right now star women! Just look at Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Worlds’ Finest (now starring the Batman and Superman of Earth-2 selling at 19K), and Wonder Woman.'

Step 03: Suggest that retconning fan-favourite diverse characters (like Cassandra Cain) out of existence for new white female characters is a good trade-off, because such an endeavour is symptomatic of DC’s commitment to diversity. Be sure to ignore that DC still managed to find places for all of Batman’s sons, Flashes, and Green Lanterns in a compressed continuity as doing so would force you to acknowledge sexism in a tone deaf argument looking to dispel the fact. Be sure to also ignore that two of the heroines that were originally retconned out of existence were only brought back after fans kept ASKING for DC to bring them back. Be sure to ignore that one of them was brought back in the worst way possible:  as a villain born out of another heroine’s mother’s remains. Be sure to especially not look at that new top-selling islamic female character Marvel’s been pimping because doing so would force you to acknowledge that Marvel does know how to create new original female superheroes. Be sure not to point out that DC’s new original female superhero has a costume that looks an awful lot like Nightwing’s!

Example: 'Not to mention the fact that DC is constantly compensating for the characters they off or remove temporarily, especially the women. I mean these last few months alone we’ve seem the debut of Donna Troy and Stephanie Brown as well as Harper Row’s inaugural stint as the hero BlueBird (oh look an original female superhero! DC apparently knows ho to do this but Marvel doesn’t)’

Step 04: Be sure to tell the disadvantaged individual that it’s okay for DC to be lazy and brutalise characters (especially diverse ones like women) as plot devices in narratives because their best selling comics fronted by (or largely fronted by) men are getting the kinds of stories that appeal to men.

Example: 'Killing or maiming a character is a story telling technique used to further the plot, is it sometimes over used by DC? Yeah they’ve used it too much sometimes in the past but you can’t deny that in the last 3 years DC has been hammering out killer stories like Justice League Origins, Throne of Atlantis, Night of the Owls, Death of the Family, Gorilla Warfare, Trinity War and even the controversial Forever Evil.’

Step 05: Don’t forget to climax your privileged rage with the classic 'feminists ruin every thing’ tactic. Because diverse people pointing out problems with the way diverse people are represented in a medium they enjoy kills the joy of the privileged individual who wants to enjoy that same medium without having to be made aware of the prejudiced culture influencing their direction. Also don’t forget the special formula: 20 fridged women + 1 fridged queer man = EQUALITY!

Example: 'And if you plan on using your cherry picked cases of women being hurt in comics (which would make them equal to male comic characters wouldn’t it?) to somehow justify how DC is shit then first of all, screw you for using bullshit minority cases to try and show why a hobby someone enjoys is wrong and “misogynistic”.'

Step 06: Always assume that a criticism for one side is always an argument in favour of the other side. Be sure to discredit the success of the other side by pointing out how their increasing number of sales is symptomatic of failure for welcoming…errr excuse me ’pandering to’ more diverse people (especially women) to the club, and how Lady Thor selling in the Top 10 for the past four months is evidence of that failure.

Example: ’Secondly, Marvel is worse then DC (if that’s the narrative you’re pushing) in comic sales right now, this probably has to do with the immense pandering Marvel is doing right now what with Lady Thor and black Captain America.

Step 07: Seal your overall cluelessness on issues that are not part of your everyday life experience by reiterating the disadvantaged individual must be ignorant for suggesting institutional prejudice exists in an industry with a history of it. After all, DC Comics being aware of sexism as a real thing wasn’t the reason characters like Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Power Girl, and the Huntress were created, especially in an effort to give girls superheroes to relate to, and to help diversify a largely male narrative. After all, the New 52 has been a far more progressive era of DC Comics for putting out books fronted by women and making sure they succeeded. This is why Voodoo, Birds of Prey, Katana, and Batwoman are still being published, and why World’s Finest is still a Huntress/Power Girl book, and not another boring Batman/Superman book.

Example: tl;dr: Comics are in no way misogynistic, and you trying to say they are is honestly pathetic as it’s clear you know very little about DC or the New 52.

Once you’ve completed all of the above steps, congratulations! You have successfully become a Class-A Mansplainer, certified with a PhD degree!

Here’s your reward.
