With a little luck, you can find that sometimes the last person on earth you want to be with is the the one person you can't be without.

May Dramione and Pride & Prejudice never die!

Happy Mother’s Day

Some of my favorite quotes from my mom... she’s a hoot.

My mom: I can't buy more [Noah's arc-themed baby nursery things for a nonexistent grandbaby]; I'm running out of hiding places. Your father will think I'm nuts if he finds them.

———————

My mom: If I had to choose a Big Bang character who was most like your sister, it would be Sheldon. Don't tell her that.

———————

My mom: She said her husband had an affair with her best friend. I don't think she should call that woman her "best friend" anymore.

———————

(While we were on vacation, touring a Buddist temple in Japan)

My mom: Here, buy this from the nice monk; it's a fertility charm.
Me: Mom, shouldn't I at least be in a relationship? I mean... I’m making good money now... I guess I could do the single mom thing. [The monk, who likely can’t speak English, is now smiling and nodding at us.] Okay, sure, why not... He thinks it’s a good idea, so who am I to judge?
My mom: Right... let’s buy the relationship charm first.

———————

My mom: Of course they have commercials in England; Dad and I watch shows on BBC all the time.
Me: Mom, that's BBC America.
My mom: It's the same thing.

———————

My mom: I didn’t forget. I misplaced the memory.

my future 9 year old child reading Harry Potter: I love this mommy me: great but stay open minded and critical and don’t take everything at face value. I have prepared discussion questions

if I ever have kids…

So... My cousin’s wife (I’ll call her Goose) asked if her daughter (Bunny) could call me to talk about Harry Potter. I had told Bunny about HP over Thanksgiving, and Goose said Bunny wanted to talk to someone after reading the first one.

This was my reaction:

Bunny is eight years old, and I absolutely KNEW this would be the year to introduce her to HP.

I had been planning for this conversation forever... and my time had come!

Or... So I thought...

Bunny calls, and she was so confused. It took a minute, but I quickly discovered the reason.

She had begun reading The Cursed Child.

Words cannot express the burning frustration growling around in my head. For the minority of the tumblr users out who don’t know, The Cursed Child is the script for the play set 19 years after the book series (Harry is an adult). Bunny picked it out at the bookstore because it had a yellow cover and that’s her favorite.

Ugh, no wonder she had questions!!!

I kept trying to keep this poor little girl positive and upbeat (because I know reading isn't her thing), but I just wanted to say hand the phone over to Goose so I can give her a piece of my mind.

Image

I even have half a mind to call my cousin and chew him out. His wife should no longer be in charge of his daughter's reading material. This is reckless. If reading isn't your kid's thing, don't give them a novel length script to read. They aren't like regular books. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Who buys an eight year old the script to a play, never even looking at it?

What’s next? Software manuals?

For those who do care, I am arranging for the correct books to be sent to Bunny.

This will be fixed. I cannot allow Goose to ruin Bunny's (hopefully) possible interest in reading.

The Look, a code that parent and child understand but outsiders do not (similar to the pleasant expression you or your husband direct at each other at parties, meaning “I want to go home! Now!”). It consists of a tight little smile, in which the mouth curves upward but the eyes are fixed on the child with a decidedly unhumorous intensity. You may need to practice, but Miss Manners assures you that it is worth the effort. Done properly, it freezes an errant child in his tracks and dampens his desire for defiance with the dread of what is to come.

Mediaeval-Muse’s Global Medieval Lit Starter Pack

So… I occasionally teach medieval lit, and in the past few years, my school’s program has made our medieval studies classes more global. As a result, I’ve gotten to teach some cool things from the middle ages that aren’t from England. I figured I’d put some good starters (mostly poetry) in a list if anyone is interested. I can recommend much more global lit (Chronicles, prose, religious tracts, etc), but these, I think, are the easiest to get a hold of - mostly thanks to Penguin Classics. Note: I limit “medieval” to the 6th-16th centuries, though I acknowledge that designation is problematic because what does “medieval” mean anyway?

My best friend is a prosecutor. A teenage defendant's mother wore a 'what time is it? 4:20!' t-shirt and pot earrings to her son's bail hearing... he got caught with drugs at school. Free legal tip: don't do that.

y’all make my brain hurt... but I’m still working this into a fanfic somehow.

  • Last year, PBteen unveiled their first Harry Potter collection and we fell head over broomstick for the decor inspired by one of our favorite literary and cinematic universes.
  • Now, they’re adding to the collection with some seriously magical new items that you’ll want for your room ASAP.
  • Our favorite pieces in the collection? For starters, we’re not traveling anywhere without the hard-sided luggage made to look like the trunks every Hogwarts students lugs onto the train each year.

I just finished buying all the stuff I wanted from their first line... now I need more HP decor... and a pajama set to match my sheets and a second one that will match my comforter...

edit: what do you mean the items in my cart won’t ship for over a month??? noooooo...

You would be shocked to hear how several of my coworkers (myself notably not included) have bachelor’s degrees in English (prior to their law degrees).

IDK... maybe this is all me. Way back, once upon a time, in a world without smart phones, I took Latin in high school. I remember how Mrs. Miller actually needed to teach us English... first... as in Before-Any-Latin... because we didn’t know our native language well enough to begin learning anything in her class... even by the time she got her hands on us.

So... before I rant like a lunatic in my office regarding commas and/or Restrictive and Nonrestrictive Clauses, resulting in inevitable glassy-eyed blank stares should anyone accidentally overhear me... please feel free to use this handy mnemonic I made.

You’re welcome.
