Storywise - the last Skywalker should have lived at the end of this trilogy because that is how you conclude a 40year old story of family tragedy. You don't end it in death. You end it in life. The story requires it. This is not about pleasing the fans. It's about ending a tale of constant sorrow and grief, manipulation and torment...it's about making things right this time. Ben made the ultimate sacrifice by laying his life for the woman he loved, thus saving her from death and that's beautiful... but it would be ok if this was a stand alone movie. It's not. It's Star Wars. It's the end of 9 movie saga. The story requires a happy end for a family that has been in constant pain. You end it in LIFE. Love, marriage, children. Not death.

@maxanney I kinda got the same vibe, until I remembered the last track of the BSO, that plays in the background in that same scene is called "A New Home".
Sarcastic how Luke didn’t go back to that home in the end of his Hero’s Journey, Anakin and Luke always wanted to go far away from Tatooine, Leia never lived there, and yet Rey goes back to live in that dead place.
