My trip to Sacramento to see #TheNewestAmericans was incredible. Surrounded by my family, my collaborator Michael Estrin, and his family, I felt overwhelmed. Seeing the people I've come to know so intimately surrounding us with their pride, determination, and resilience lifted me up. I've learned so much about our nation through their words, and I've learned to embrace what I'd taken somewhat for granted before. Right now I'm feeling deepest gratitude to those who sat for portraits and interviews, and massive love for my loved ones who've been at my side as we've worked to produce this exhibition. Here's a comprehensive look at the @thecamuseum show BUT if you're in the area, I hope you'll check it out in-person. The cherry on top is that we've been EXTENDED THROUGH JULY 29. Over one month more to see it! (at California Museum)

Last summer I was beyond thrilled to show my work projected 100’ tall on a downtown building — and now I get to do it again. This year’s “Big LA Portrait Gallery” brings together a strong group assembled by @marenation & @maggieepaeker and I couldn’t be happier to be among them. View the 100’ x 100’ projection from Thursday, June 7th until Grand Park’s big July 4th celebration. Join us this Thursday June 7 from 8 to 11 to celebrate the launch! With work by @alysonaliano @emilyshur @gizellehernandez @greggsegal @jfpetersphoto @mscottphoto @melodiemcdaniel @philipcheungphoto @ryanschude @spencer_lowell @mychivas (at Grand Park)

A beautiful short film by Shireen Alihaji about the 'Unsung Heroes of LA County' photographic project for the California Community Foundation. Lovely to have the chance to discuss my process alongside Noe Montes and Stella Kalinina.

Very pleased to share the news that one of my photographs was selected for the American Photography 32 contest and website. The image, below, is of Chicago-based gun violence interrupter @CobeWilliams and two of the community members he works with the stop senseless violence in the city.

It’s such a pleasure to be amongst so many of my favorite photographers and friends in this year’s selections. Thank you to the incredible AP jury, and to @FlorenceNash15 @catrionaniaolain @people for connecting me to this story. See all the winning photos at http://bit.ly/1Rxkx7p

VIOLENCE INTERRUPTERS

Photographed for People magazine in Nov 2015.

ABOUT THIS SERIES: From journalist Jeff Truesdell’s piece: “Cobe Williams (pictured at left, immediately above, and throughout) grew up on the streets of Englewood, Chicago’s violent South Side neighborhood…embraced its criminal ways [and] eventually redirected his ambitions. He joined the model Cure Violence program launched in the city in 2000 to “interrupt” what its founder sees as an epidemic of shootings and killings, using ex-offenders to build relationships with those at risk to stop violence before it happens.

Over the course of three days I photographed Williams, outreach worker Joshua Brooks, and violence interruptor Rue Hodge with the families and young people whom they mentor.

The last installment from my #‎MAKECREATE series -- urban farmer Faye Barry. See the whole project HERE.

And here’s a little bit about Faye: She’s built gardens throughout Los Angeles to help people connect with their food, and has developed educational farms to empower and inspire young people. She also worked a successful restaurant’s farm in the front yard of a home in Venice Beach, CA where I photographed her.

This is the last post of motorcycle designer Mark Dugally from my new series #MAKECREATE. For more, you can see the whole project HERE.

Mark is an artistic polyglot. Trained as a architectural designer, he worked for years as a sculptor and painter, and for the last decade has built one-of-a-kind custom motorcycles. Just as much art as they are transportation, Mark’s previous creations are now displayed in the finest automotive collections in the United States. I shot him in his studio outside of Los Angeles, at work on his Dugally Derelict scooters which incorporate found objects, bric-a-brac, and aeronautical surplus parts.

More from artist Michelle Jane Lee, part of my new project #‎MAKECREATE.

Michelle paints and draws the most intimate of details for all to see. Using a color-encoded alphabet she’s devised, her works are translations of her own expressions of longing to unrequited lovers. She’s been exhibited in solo shows throughout the US, and in small group shows internationally. Lee was raised in Seoul, attended the Art Institute of Chicago, and now lives and works in Downtown LA, where I photographed in her studio.
