Imagine my shock as a neurodivergent teen when I first realized that using large vocabulary and eloquent speech doesn't make you less likely to be misinterpreted, rather it adds an entirely new layer of misinterpretation I had never even realized existed in the form of people thinking you're being snobbish or condescending when you're just trying to be specific

Heya! Been a little silent from job hunting, and I just scored a new job last Friday. It's been a hectic learning curve, but things are starting to click in place!

At the moment though the shift to a new job takes up most of my viable dashing days, and I found myself in a bit of a corner with a bill coming up! As I'm down to two small commissions on my list, I'm opening up slots to add a few more to this next batch! Looking to aim for about 4-6 to include with this group that I can poke at over the weekends - as they've been fun and relatively swift to do when I'm able to sit down and chug through them.

I'm still currently only taking payments via Paypal, but leave a comment or send in a note/dm/mssg with the form below, and I can look into getting you on the list and send a note for additional details!

What these Include- -A fullbody refined pencil sketch with minimal basic shading, and colored (dark characters will receive a lineart-only version as well to show off the hidden details). - Full size and Web sized PNGs in a compressed ZIP file

Can Do-

-Just about any species real, extinct, fantasy, ARPG, etc

- Unusual body plans (centaur*, mermaid, etc)

*On occasion I'll take on one or two humanoid-faced characters to try working towards developing those as a skill and style, but it's very case-by-case and unpredictable

-Anthros

Maybe Can Do-

- Humanoid faces - this is still a big hurdle for me, and progress on them is going to be a lot slower for the moment. I will accept these on a case-by-case basis.

Heyos! I'm discovering some budget hijinks this month due to dental needs, and a car payment coming up that I am just shy of fully covering for the month. These are PWYW creature colored sketches I'll mix in with my current queue starting at $30 ea. Multiple orders welcome, can do most non-human creatures! Shoot me a message if you want one!

Ok, so something I've noticed that is utterly baffling to me is that all the Americans I know primarily dry their clothes using a machine called a dryer. I don't even own a dryer. So, I need to know:

well, in florida specifically, the air makes clothes wetter, not drier :') but in the wider US?

  • HOAs often put restrictions on clotheslines as 'eyesores'
  • that has given clotheslines a lower-class association
  • americans are generally WILDLY paranoid about theft
  • apartments don't always have space

but, imo, the least-discussed reason is:

  • there's so many fucking cars everywhere, always, at all hours of the day, often at high speeds, and car exhaust/tires kicking up dust/etc means that stuff left outside tends to get dirty really fast

We line-dry inside for things we don't want to get beat up like picture tee-shirts, but everything else goes in the dryer which does a cycle in the same time as the washer.

And when you're doing the washing once a week, meaning you have 3-4 loads in a day and line drying takes all day...

AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT.

In my case I do a hybrid systems - clothes that can benefit from the fluff-n-tumble that comes from the dryer get chucked in. Sometimes they're still a little damp, but that's fine. Now I'm a tiny apartment dweller with no balcony to utilize for the clothing I have that cannot be simply tossed and set loose in the turning bin lest they be gradually stripped of their inherent state - looking at you faux fur fluffy-soft fleeces. Anything acrylic thread-dominant like apparel made of faux fur, plushy fabric, etc etc that can get matted down over time from exposure to the high-temperature environment of the dryer drum I use a drape-and-dry system that involves one of those unfolding drying racks and my shower curtain rod with the assist of another expanding rod to brace it above my bathtub. This has proven excellent for drip-drying swimsuits, drain-drying hoses from cleaning fish tanks, drying papers from crafts, draping washed christmas garland over to dry before stowage, and of course drying aformentioned fleeces

Bend our ankles like that

Like what???

Avatar
oceanaromantic

At steep angles! Bones fuse and prevent that if you don’t do it regularly as a kid. It’s the same reason we don’t climb trees like monkeys, whose ankles don’t have the same restrictions we do

Human ankles don’t normally work like that!

Iirc someone did an anatomical study and people of slavic descent have shallower hip sockets that allow that movement more easily as well.

Avatar
oceanaromantic

Yes! This was something we talked about in my physical anthropology class, that like, some people physically cannot slav squat just because of their bones and skeletal structure.

Look until this post started going around I had no idea some people couldn’t do this???

Reblog and tag with whether you can slav squat or not.

Kitchen appliances I would recommend purchasing when moving out on your own:

  • Air fryer
  • One of those panini press grill things (not only can you make sandwiches but you can grill chicken and steak if you have an expensive model)
  • Rice cooker (not only good for rice but quinoa and any other grain, alternatively you could buy an Instapot)
  • Electric kettle (depends on how much tea you drink but it’s good for boiling water for cleaning and preheating water for pasta etc)

Kitchen appliances I would not recommend buying when you move out on your own:

  • Counter top coffee maker (you should not be drinking an entire pot of coffee on your own and it will be stale by the time you get to the bottom, plus these bitches suck to clean, Keurigs, French presses and stove top percolators where you make one or two cups at a time are more practical for a single person)

Here are some things it’s okay to buy off brand/cheap:

  • Cleaning supplies. Most cut rate sponges, bleach sprays, Clorox wipe knock offs and cleaning chemicals get the job done just fine.
  • Food staples like pasta, canned vegetables, rice etc.

Here are some things you should never buy off brand/cheap:

  • Trash bags. I made the mistake of buying Dollar General brand ones and they ripped several times, sending garbage all over my yard while I tried to take the trash out. I had to double and sometimes triple bag which was not economical in the long run.
  • Toilet paper. The two and one ply stuff sucks. You you have to use much more than you would if you bought quality paper.

Good luck and God bless you to any college freshmen out there.

toaster ovens are also very useful, much more than a regular toaster. you can do many things you can do in an oven, just faster and with less hassle

.... An air fryer is just an upgraded toaster oven. Or at least, one worth its counterspace will be.

May I also add my two cents as someone who had to move into an apartment with almost no furniture or cookware/qol things - - A handheld blender - you can find these fairly cheaply at thrift stores, and if you're lucky like I was - still with their storage case. They're not as sturdy or fine tuned as a proper kitchen maid - but they're handy if you need a boost in blending things. - If you need a place to hang stuff in a kitchen for storage, such as mugs, or spatulas, or a light spice rack - make use of expanding curtain rods! I use one in my kitchen to hold my paper towel roll, hang my soap-water spritzer to fight off fruit flies in the summer, and hang wash towels from over the sink. Just be sure if you're gonna hang heavy things that the rod won't buckle or collapse on you! - In the bathroom, if you find that you don't have enough space for easy drying surfaces - grab yourself an expanding shower rod, one of those folding cheap $10 drying racks, and set yourself an overhead bathtub clothes rack - excellent for drying anything from delicates to swimsuits in the summer without the worry for puddles! If you're on the crafty side you can wrap the sides of the rack in garland for a more aesthetic feel in your shower. - A countertop ironing board and small iron - don't laugh, but you might find that you'll use that iron for more than straightening a pair of leggings - bonus is these often have a hook built-in to store away easily. - Bucket - a small bucket is a MUST - just a little dollar store bucket will do to start with, but it makes some house chores all the easier. -Tote bins are a valid form of clothes storage. The long ones slide under beds quite nicely, and keep the room looking tidy with the addition of a cheap bedskirt. -If strapped for budget, and you have a dollar store nearby - look for their modular cleaning tools - usually it's the handle with different brooms/swiffers/mops you can attach. They're not the sturdiest, but it'll see you through until you can get better stuff. - Don't be afraid to street-shop when you notice local houses are 'spring cleaning' - aka putting furniture out by the side of the road. Where I am it's a universal "Take Me!" indication if something, or group of somethings, is placed a little ways from the driveway, and sometimes accompanied with a 'FREE!' sign. Happens about twice a year in seasons, and I scored two decent condition couches in this manner, so if you have a friend with a good sized van or truck, ask them to help out! Again the idea is 'get me through from Point A to Point B in my life so I can continue to Point C and on'. May swing back around to add more stuff, but that's from my own little experiences.

Reposting this because I need to materialize it somewhere.

There are times I keep forgetting this combination is not an isolated event watching the people around me irl, and this reminder is a welcome one that my tendencies are not healthy ones.. It makes me appreciate my friends that drag me out of my little hermit hole to go swimming or candlepin bowling all the more. The people that instilled these in me were my parents and step parent, in some ways indirectly, and others absolutely directly. Build yourself that circle of those you care for that you know are gonna have the spontaneity to help you touch that grass at least once a week and start that healing path.

Something about hearing the footsteps involved in ballet makes it seem very real. But unlike when it’s audible over the music, hearing it when there’s no music doesn’t make it lose any of the magic.

Look at the body control these guys have.

I also love the uneven socks to help people see the footwork better.

The bonus part of this - that THUD is solid muscle hitting that ground. My stepmom was a professional wedding photographer - and one of her clients was a man marrying a ballet dancer. This lady pound for pound was solid muscle, and he struggled to carry her up stairs bridal-style for the photograph they wanted because of it. Gives those iconic lifts a new light donnit?

Yaaaaalllllll!!!

CHICKENS ARE FLUORESCENT!!

Look. I’m unnaturally excited about this. I learned that owls fluoresce so I had to know: Do chickens? Google wasn’t helpful. But I have all the things I need for this experiment.

Please please please if you get photos or video of your chickens under a black light tag me or this post! I WANNA SEE!!!

Pspspspss - Parakeets too! This lad looks like this in natural light -

A midge over a day almost exactly a week ago I was perusing the local pet store getting cat litter, and as part of my usual ritualistic circuit browsing from the bird section around back past cat, through dog, and ending at small critter, I detoured by the betta wall in the middle. Had been thinking about them for a while, as my office wants to see a tank set up again, and I happened to have a spare 20 gallon long tank floating around gathering dust. Last pass through I saw a gorgeous black and white betta, and wondered if there were other gems this round. Sure, some pretty ones, nothing that really stood out to me though (was kinda leaning to a platinum or opal betta to make a darkwater tank, bonus if they were a sturdy king plakat with no frilly fins to worry about being chewed on by tank mates). My eyes drifted over to spot a section of 'Glow Bettas', and felt my lip curl in disgust after seeing the ones that came through the doors at my prior pet-store job in a rival store - and now noticing there were yet new colors forced upon them. Leaning down to inspect them better, I happened to notice a sad little slip of silver in a dirty cup next to them. I didn't know what alien bettas were - and seeing the few active ones on another section I couldn't parse out what made them distinct from the rest with their muddy green shine. This one felt different for me, and when I held him up to the light I saw a blue and purple sheen over him, and he was a little disgruntled that I disturbed him from his curled up position. "Huh, that's different." I thought, and toyed with the idea of a silver betta instead of a white one in my communal tank. His condition wasn't the best, but neither was his water situation with it being fouled and yellowed by too much food - an easy fix, and his responsiveness despite it indicated he'd bounce back with some fresh water and proper feeding. Next day I was still thinking about him, and my co-workers urged me to scoop him up if I felt confident taking him in. So I scrambled out on my lunch break and found him still in the same spot quite ignored over the showier and healthier individuals. Lad wasn't too happy about it, but soon after I got him situated in his travel tank with some spring water he started turning the most vibrant blue and moving around considerably. He was still falling to the bottom of the tank though, and laying curled on his side when he tired out, which tipped me off to him having possible swim bladder issues (think like a tummy ache from too much food for non-fishkeepers that affects their ability to stay afloat - it either makes them sink like a stone, or float like a cork which is bad for a betta that needs air if left untreated) and a game plan to help him pull through it. First night home, I dug out a little 2.5 gal tank I had intended to use for craft displays for whenever I got around to doing craft shows, and got him more properly situated with a sandy bottom and modified silk plants (plus a little anubia and a couple moss balls to start off with for my first live aquarium plants). Little dude was happy exploring between periods of resting, and looked a lot livelier even with the tank half-full -

I happened to fall sick right at the same time from a coworker coming in and sharing her bug with everyone, so the weekend gave me time to spend around his tank and keep him under observation. Watching him exploring and getting improving in his environment was a treat -

And then finally, after a tentative meal of thawed pea to make sure his system was thoroughly cleaned out, it was time to give him a proper meal of thawed bloodworms - just two, as he's a little fellow. Boy, I think I opened his eyes to what a betta should be eating. Dude couldn't get enough and started doing a very energetic Begging Dance and zoomies afterwards -

After that day any time he saw me move near his tank, or even turn my head to look his direction, he'd go into an excited fit of zooming around the front of the tank, look up to the surface, and zoom some more! I even tried to see if I could carefully walk up to the tank out of what I thought was his view, but when I peeked around the railing of the shelf he was on - little dude was staring right back at me from that corner of the tank! Today was the first day I did a water change in his tank - wasn't sure how he'd take it, but he was mostly baffled by the strange thing intruding his space, and curious about the stream of water coming into his tank. Later I found him contemplating the new water level in his home from when he started out (the blur line is where the old water level was, I just need to get in there and scrub it off) -

Sure he may always have his issue with staying afloat in the water, and may have to live out his life in this little tank because of it, but darned if I'm not gonna try to make sure he's well cared for. My eventual goal is to make his little tank fully planted like a mini world, maybe put a little cherry shrimp or two in there with him, and keep serving him food on a toothpick like the spoiled boy he is. I would have loved to try to put him in the 20 gal communal tank when it goes up, but I worry that may cause more issues for him if he can't maintain his buoyancy in any water deeper than this tank. It's clearly not dampening his style though! I'm not entirely sure what spurred me to take him in - likely a mixture of, "I can help this animal that would have otherwise been overlooked time and time again until he fell too ill to recover", disdain from having seen how this store handles their betta stock compared to the one I worked with, and.. maybe a little bit of spite... A point of principle so to speak.. A way to show that even if they're not the flashiest or most active in their little container, a little bit of careful love and awareness can make a difference for one little fish. Currently waiting on some lava rock to arrive that I ordered to start hardscaping the bigger tanks, so I'll try to post updates as his tank evolves! Any advice for setting up a planted tank would be great! I've not done much in the way of exploring that aspect of fishkeeping, so if I can hit the ground running with as much knowledge as possible the better I can make a successful setup! At the moment my plant plans are - Java Moss, duckweed, Anubia +/or hornwort + some kind of carpet plant for the bottom - not sure what though.

Aaand because I had burned my day fussing with a logo, why not make it a full personal art day and play with an idea that'd been knocking around in my brain for a while.

I'd been low-key following @jayrockin and their Runaway to the Stars project, and it got me thinking at one point what a centaur foodie might look like in that setting, especially when traveling abroad and having to get creative for making their limited food resources more interesting. I've no doubt she's a frequent visitor of the med bays as she's been too tempted by good smells to try adding into her growing list of recipes. She'll insist it's all for a good cause though! Not sure how I want her markings to be, or if she's a part of a roving clan, or one of those outlier exchange program kids. Then there's the whole name.. thing...

And many who didn't die now have to live with permanent disability that prevents them from holding any kind of job (especially because employers are so opposed to making the work accessible).

Those who are able-bodied and still remain have left to fill the higher-paying vacancies left behind by the newly deceased/disabled.

They died when you told them they were "essential" and couldn't not work. They died when you refused them paid sick leave during a pandemic. They died because they have to work two or three jobs to make ends meet, multiplying their chance of exposure. They died because you refused to do even the most basic things like wear a mask, not go out, and get vaccinated.

They died because you killed them, America.

I wanna drop my two cents in, as one of those who were caught in the wave of, "You are an essential worker! We'll take steps to protect you!" when the pandemic hit in America.

Very quickly my life went from having to call out sick maybe two to three times a year where a day of sleep cleared me up again to return to work, to almost falling deathly ill Once A Week from exposure not to Covid, but the cleaning chemicals to a degree that I was in the ER more times than I cared for grasping onto consciousness while my lungs screamed for air and the doctors waved my condition off as 'Bronchitis' every time. One point I didn't know if I'd see the dawn as I couldn't even stand or see clearly fighting for air. It was that bad. Ten years of retail has made it easy to hide the suffering, as I imagine many others in the industry has also learned.

But...

Being in contact with caustic chemicals sprayed from a bottle every five minutes that is floating in the air and being breathed in around the masks did an absolute number on my lungs in my effort to protect the customers as we were taught to do by management through corporate mandates.

Wanna know what my job did when the illnesses started stacking up? Slashed my hours to almost nonexistent. Can't cover even Food with that income. And it was wrapped in a pretty bow of, "Well you were getting sick so much we wanted to make sure you're getting better!" I'm a patient person, but that snapped my resolve stiff as a lightning rod to leave a place that was slowly killing me while playing clueless. I cannot hold my breath anymore the way I used to - and I LOVE to swim - that was a devastating thing for me to discover, along with a reduced capacity to manage stairs while carrying loads for things such as moving or groceries after I recovered and avoided crippling illnesses with my current job that's helped keep me afloat while hunting for better fields on which to graze in this confusing world.

It does not surprise me at all how many people are saying "Enough is Enough."

Hey guys!

Yesterday I had to go into the doctors for some pain at the base of my spine, and long-story short I've been down two days, and may need a third before I can hit the road again and keep working for my monthly budget needs - which unfortunately is putting me way behind on my bill needs.

So! I'm opening some emergency sketch commissions that are Pay-What-You-Want to help towards the time lost in recovery from the minor operation that is currently making sitting a unique form of discomfort.

Ideally I'm aiming for about $200 to cover today and yesterday, or today and tomorrow if I need to stay down with pain meds again and still dealing with nausea from antibiotics.

I currently only take payments through Paypal as that's all I have set up for the time being.

Leave a comment or send a note with the form below, and I'll get with you while I'm working on clearing out my few remaining pieces in my list!

What these Include-

- A fullbody refined pencil sketch with minimal basic shading and colored (dark characters will receive a lineart-only version as well for details) - Full size and Web sized PNGs in a compressed ZIP file.

Can Do-

- Just about any species real, extinct, fantasy, etc

- Strange body conformations (think taur, mer, etc) - Anthros

Can't Do-

- Humanoid Faces - I can fudge most details, but outright human faces are still a major hurdle for me to work with.

Woo! Two pieces down on my list! I'll be posting them as I go so I don't accidentally inundate people's inboxes with a bunch of arts.

This one is for Peentz, who wanted their two allosaur characters acting mischievous (or at least one of them is!) for their PWYW sketch from the emergency batch I held due to needing to recoup from my operation. Still healing from that, but at least able to get up and about, hence the sudden silence after my marathon getting older pieces finished.

Onwards to the others!

If you still want to snag one of your own, I'm open to taking on additional slots here (though no longer on emergency status!) as I'm in the process of transitioning to a new job that pretty much hired me on the spot after my resume landed in their laps, but I don't know when that's gonna be official yet. It's gonna at least mean a big shift in my schedule into something hopefully more regular!

I'll keep adding more to this reblog chain as well so folks can have a viewable chain of images for what this would cover!

Piece for Monarobot of their little spiny Goblin Blin!

One more down! This one for Thunderlord_Toriel of their beastie Obaet!
