What do you have to say for yourself?

Within seconds of this video finishing she made a half-assed attempt to jump on the handle from my knee - simultaneously falling into and knocking over the basket - sending all the sweet woodruff into the air in a flailing effort to show-off perch for a camera that wasn’t even on.

Great art thou, O Lord, and marvellous are thy works: no words suffice to sing the praise of thy wonders. For thou by thine own will hast brought all things out of nothingness into being: by thy power thou dost hold together the creation and by thy providence thou dost govern the world. Of four elements hast thou compounded the creation: with four seasons hast thou crowned the circuit of the year. All the spiritual powers tremble before thee. The sun sings thy praises; The moon glorifies thee; The stars supplicate before thee; The light obeys thee; The deeps are afraid at thy presence; The fountains are thy servants. Thou hast stretched out the heavens like a curtain; Thou hast established the earth upon the waters; Thou hast walled about the sea with sand. Thou has poured forth the air that living things may breathe. The angelic powers minister to thee; the choirs of archangels worship thee; the many-eyed cherubim and the six-winged seraphim, standing round thee and flying about thee, hide their faces in fear of thine unapproachable glory... By the elements, by the angels and by men, by things visible and invisible, may thy most holy name be glorified, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. -- Prayer at the Great Blessing of the Waters (Feast of Epiphany)

St. George's Feasts

There are four major Sviatyj Yuri [Saint George] feasts in my devotional year: two official (observed by the Orthodox church), and two unofficial (observed by myself).

Sviatyj Yuri opens and closes the gates of summer. His official feasts are positioned at the start of significant seasons - summer (early May), and winter (early December) - making him, in my eyes, a solar-powered spirit. It’s with that understanding I also perform a St. George slava [veneration] on the summer and winter solstices.

May 6th is Yuriev Den Vesenniy [Saint George’s Day in the Spring] in the old calendar still utilized by Ukrainians and the Orthodox Church. December 9th is his winter feast - “Yuri’s day in the fall”.

By the time we reach early December in northeast Scotland the sun’s radiant face has turned away, and summer’s gate has been firmly shut. The days ahead are long, dark, and bitter. Candles - miniature reminders of the sun’s glorious strength - are lit, and are kept alive through various winter rites until summer’s gate begins opening again at spring’s great thaw.

Draw-and-Seek: Meadow Buttercup [2024]

Meadow Buttercup (Ranunculus acris), FOUND. [1 of 2]

At the beginning of my devotional year I pull two sets of cards.

One set focuses on native species of plants, trees, and animals that were sacred to my husband’s Scottish ancestors (my annual ‘year with…’ project), the second set comes from a pack of wild flower-themed playing cards - native, naturalized, and invasive species - that I’m meant to find during my various outdoor expeditions (my annual 'draw-and-seek' hunt).

It’s a game, really - definitely not as serious as my plant, tree, and animal for the year - but it pushes me to explore, and helps align familiar appearances with unfamiliar names (sometimes vice versa).
