Some more explorations from my time working on Wizards! When we got the script for episode 9, I was really wanted to explore/pitch the idea of Douxie being a kid (maybe 12?) when Merlin picked him up. So I did these beat moments of their meeting to explore that concept and his remembrance of that memory. I love drawing my baby boy as extra baby booyyyy, need to do some fan art of him soon. Enjoy <3

THANK YOU.

This is such an important moment between Merlin and Douxie. He walks up to his apprentice unexpectedly. He doesn’t say a thing, yet everything that needs to be said and more is conveyed through that single nod. His beautiful blue eyes are kind, and he smiles with pride and gratitude under his silver beard. His gesture is graceful and weighted, his hand heavy and affectionate on Douxie’s shoulder: Merlin means it. He bows his head in respect and acknowledgement towards Douxie’s quick, creative and successful reaction to the attack of the changeling. The music exalts Douxie’s deed as well, he’s done a really good job and for a moment, we see what this boy can be like when he lights up in his full potential. We see the great, honest Wizard he can become in this small moment where he gets to shine for a focussed deed with a selfless heart.

And Douxie soaks in the compliment like a sponge. He’s able to receive Merlin’s validation all the more because he wasn’t begging for it in that moment, or felt entitled to it. The love came unexpected as Douxie was simply acting as himself and doing the right thing. (This is a real, true life hack to follow actually.) He’s just glad the threat is over and happy he got to team up with his greatest idol.

Merlin recognizes for the first time that Douxie did something he couldn’t do. Douxie (and Claire, but you get the point) had been right about Morgana trying to infiltrate the castle. Douxie had put up defenses, Douxie protected King Arthur at the tournament when Merlin wasn’t there, Douxie was the one who warned Merlin and got them all out of the tower in time, and Douxie was the one to stun the changeling without hesitation, unafraid, while Merlin was still busy figuring out what had happened. Merlin doesn’t simply tell Douxie “well done”

He tells him “I was wrong. I wasn’t there, I didn’t foresee this. But you did. I have you to thank for getting us out of the tower, and I have you to thank for eliminating that changeling. I’m sorry that I wasn’t there, and I could not have done this without you. WELL DONE.”

There’s so much to unpack about this short moment, and I thank you for setting me up to write about this @lillpon!
