To all my amazing artist friends!

October is drawing closer, and this means one thing: WITCHTOBER!

I love this art challenge, it’s literally my favorite of the year.

For those who haven’t heard of it...basically you draw witches. There are a lot of prompt lists under the #witchtober2020 tag on IG. You pick one and follow it, drawing and posting a witch each day for 31 days.

This year I’ve come up with my own prompt list, and I’m hoping to be able to draw as many witches as possible! See the list below, or if you want check it out on my IG profile HERE

I would love for some of you to adopt my prompt list and participate to 2020 Witchtober too!

P.S. thanks to @eccentricallyfabulous for the graphic! She’s the MVP!!

Once Upon a Lifetime Fest

Drum roll, please…

We are so excited to introduce the:

Once Upon a Lifetime Fest

As much as we all love the sexier side of triad and multi ships, sometimes there’s something deliciously satisfying about the more normal aspects of their relationships.

Our previous fests have focused on earning that E rating, but with the Spring season upon us, the Kinky Crew here at TRS wants to give you all a chance to button up those high collars and show us what happens after the fics typically fade to black. Instead of showing us what happens between the sheets, we want to see everything else!

Do you want to write Harry, Hermione, and Ron buying their first house? Do you want to read Draco, Pansy, and Theo walking down the aisle? Maybe you’re interested in seeing Hermione, Lucius, and Snape take a vacation! If so, this is the fest for you!

We want to fulfill your (not so wild) T-rated dreams!

All prompts will center around various moments in your ship’s lifetime. (i.e. the birth of their first child, holidays, assembling furniture, etc.)

Now onto the nitty, gritty details.

Because this is such a busy time for the fandom, we’ve set a low word count but will allow multiple submissions (HA!) as long as the first one is posted when the next is claimed.

Important Dates:

  • March 1 - Claiming Opens
  • March 31 - Submissions Due
  • April 3 - Reveals Begin

Rules:

  • Must include 3+ characters. (Opening to any and all pairings.)
  • Stories must not be rated higher than T. (This means ZERO smut. Zip. Zilch. Nada.)
  • Stories must meet a 1k minimum word count. No maximum word count.
  • Stories must be considered complete by the end of the fest. No ongoing multichapters will be part of the collection unless they are posted in their entirety during the fest dates.
  • Each prompt may only be claimed ONCE.
  • You may only claim ONE prompt at a time.
  • To claim any additional prompts, your current prompt must be fulfilled and submitted to the collection on Ao3 and an admin must be notified prior to claiming another one.
  • Smut isn’t the only thing to earn the M or E rating. Because of the T rating, triggering topics should be limited. If you choose to include triggering topics, you MUST utilize Ao3’s standard tagging and warning system. Non-con, dub-con, or heavy themes that may require a higher rating than T will NOT be allowed. If you have any questions, please PM a member of the Kinky Crew.

All rules and deadlines can be found in this Google Document!

Stay tuned for more information before claiming begins!

Did not expect to fight this battle yet again but here we are.

“File-sharing” is not people peddling stolen stories in a dark alley as a very few loud voices would have us believe. It is literally sharing stories with others who want to read them. Back in the early fandom days, stories were hand-written and distributed. Then came fanzines. Early internet days, fans printed whole stories and kept them in binders, passing them to friends in the hallways at school. Sharing stories is literally what fandom is built on.

“But what about the authors?” you may ask. If I don’t ask an author’s permission before sending my friend a link to the story on FFN or AO3, I’m not going to ask for the permission to send my friend my PDF or ePub of the same story. Just like I don’t ask for an author’s permission before sharing my books with others. Also, think about this. Safe/everythursday had been gone from fandom and social media for a few years before Hawthorn & Vine went down. If it weren’t for those gosh awful file-sharing thieves, fans would never be able to read The Fallout again. Or Parade of the Sun. Or For Whom the Bell Tolls. You get my point.

Don’t buy into the hype. Being against file-sharing is a new (and incredibly minority) belief that only exists in small sunsets of this fandom, and it’s time that mindset died out.

Signed,

An author that knows names of people with PDFs of my stories and is tickled pink by it, and also knows that some of the loudest antis have their own PDFs saved and have shared them with me

The thing is though, this isn’t about file-sharing. Not really. in the 5 or so years I’ve been on tumblr in the HP fandom, I’ve noticed that on a semi-regular basis, a handful of popular fanfiction writers will find some little thing that they can blow up into enormous outrage. They argue with others, and then predictably claim they’ve been horrifically victimized, block the “offenders” and then sit back and wait for some of their fans to rush in to stroke their bruised egos with fawning attention.

This time it was Tori pointing out that no one kicked Colubrina out of a group - she chose to leave herself (I was in the group when it happened, btw). Colubrina is the one who turned it into a huge drama fest over file-sharing. Sometimes it’s an author acting like a fan asking if she’s going to update a story = abuse. Sometimes it’s an author complaining about not getting enough reviews or not liking the wording of the reviews she gets. Usually the writer’s drama-fest is paired with her threatening to delete certain stories or to not update certain stories. The consistent element though is a writer creating drama for attention and validation. It happens often enough that more and more people are now seeing the pattern and recognizing it for the blatant attention grab it clearly is.  I used to get angry when I saw writers do this, and to some extent I still do. But mostly I just feel embarrassed for them because creating online drama for that kind of attention and validation from strangers on the internet is just sad. Arguing with them and pointing out when they’re wrong clearly does no good. So maybe the best thing we can do to curb this sort of nonsense is to stop giving them the attention and validation they want when they do this.

If you want to control your fanfiction and make sure no one ever has a copy, hand write it on paper. Only allow people to read it while seated at your kitchen table. After you've confiscated all their mobile devices. And make them tea to drink while they read, because it's the nice thing to do.

I’m so tired of being quiet. I’ve been quiet my entire life because I get anxious with confrontation, but this is all kinds of wrong.

There’s this famous author that LIES about being kicked out of groups, when she in truth rage-quit all the groups that apply a pro-fandom stance and allow file sharing.

File-sharing is how fandom WAS BORN, for those who don’t know or might not remember. File sharing is the rule, those holier-than-thou authors who want you to believe you’re guilty if you download and share fics aren’t. You aren’t guilty.

No other fandom has such issues with file sharing. YOU KNOW WHY? Because no fanfic writer holds rights on their stories. It’s all JKR’s, since we’re talking about the HP fandom. And if we REALLY were to always respect creator’s wishes and be “decent human beings” (apparently I’m not), we wouldn’t write non-canon pairings like Dramione, nor would we write smut. Do you see JKR making a fuss about it though?

Also, NO ONE IS STEALING ANYTHING, the author is always credited. Even AO3 has a download button that saves automatically all the author’s info!!

If this anon is saying *I* was the rude one, I suggest a reading comprehension crash course, since I simply 1) pointed out Colubrina was never kicked out from the groups 2) tried to point out that downloading fics is VITAL to preserve fandom history (and there are SO many authors who’ve been in the fandom well before Colubrina, like Bex-Can and Akashathekitty who agree with me).

Also, I am not the one who low-key compared file-sharers to rapists, accusing people who don’t agree with me of not caring about consent.

It’s bloody fanfiction, woman.

All in all, I don’t believe I was rude to point out the truth, but I did feel rudeness on the other side, and refused to engage further.

If this anon wasn’t for me...well I guess I got infected with the “world revolves around me” syndrome and I beg your pardon.

Nope.

For the sake of accuracy, you left Dramione Fanfiction Forum and Slytherin Cabal because you didn’t agree with our new rules. We didn’t kick you out 🤷🏼‍♀️😄

True. The groups I was in under my own name Ieft because they were for stealing fandom works and reposting them against the explicit wishes of the creators.

Again, for the sake of accuracy...DFF and Cabal don’t host files, we simply allow our members to talk about lost or pulled fics, and redirect them where they can find the stories they’re looking for. I think file-sharing does a great service to the fandom. All those fics on archives that went down would be lost forever otherwise.

Honestly, not long ago Bex-Chan was able to recover one of her fics she had accidentally lost THANKS to someone who had downloaded a copy.

But I’m not going to argue this further. You won’t change your mind...and I most certainly won’t change mine.

Super cool that someone else benefitted from a saved copy. Don’t care. You’re pointing people to theft.

File sharing is theft.

If you are doing it against the creators explicit wishes — as anyone is with mine — you are violating their consent.

But you’re one of those people for whom consent only matters until the person who isn’t consenting stops you from getting a thing you want. And you don’t respect creators. And you certainly don’t respect me.

As I said I’m not going to get into this, this conversation isn’t productive and I after this reply I am not going to engage further. But...I find comparing file-sharing to theft a little too overdramatic.

And I’m not “one of those people” because you have no bloody idea of the kind of person I am. I am a creator, I am pro-file sharing of my works as well, I practice what I preach. Also, if it helps you sleep at night, I don’t have any of your stories saved.
