Mothra - the giant divine moth kaiju that made its first appearance in Toho's 1961 film, "Mothra". Although benevolent in nature, she laid waste to Tokyo in her quest to recover two priestesses called the Shobijin.

Minilla and Gabara - two kaiju that made their debut in the Showa era of Godzilla films (1960's). Minilla is an infant Godzilla kaiju born on Sollgel island. He is very timid by nature and was bullied by the larger monster, Gabara. Gabara is an ogre type of monster who has the ability to produce electricity from it's hands.

Alright...as characters, they are not my favorite, but they are still two of the most well known kaiju from the time period.

Jet Jaguar - a heroic robot made by Japanese inventor, Goro Ibuki. It made its first debut in the 1973 Toho film, "Godzilla vs. Megalon". It was able to grow and change its size in order to assist Godzilla in the battle with Megalon and Gigan.

The most iconic thing that I remember about this character was the cheesy theme song that went along with it...The 70's were an interesting time in kaiju film making.

Gorosaurus - a giant bipedal dinosaur kaiju that lives on Mondo Island. This man-eater made its first debut in Toho's 1967 film, "King Kong Escapes" which featured a mechanical version of King Kong.

Baragon - a subterranean reptile kaiju that comes to the surface to feed on livestock and people at night. It made its first debut in Toho's 1965 film, "Frankenstein vs. Baragon". I've never seen this film myself, so I'm curious how good it was.

Varan - a triphibian kaiju that hs the ability to move on land, water and through the air. It was a giant prehistoric reptile that lived beneath a lake nearby a Japanese mountain village. This guy made its first appearance in Toho's 1958 film, "Varan".

Ebirah - This giant shrimp is also known as the "Horror of the Deep". It is a giant crustacean kaiju that was mutated by nuclear waste produced by a terrorist organization called the Red Bamboo. It made it's first appearance in Toho's 1966 film, "Ebirah, Horror of the Deep".

Manda - a sea dragon kaiju that served as the guardian of the undersea empire of Mu. It made its first debut in Toho's 1963 film, Atragon.

WOOPS...I haven't shared much Showa era kaiju art in awhile....

Hedorah - also known as the “Smog Monster” is an alien pollution kaiju that arrived to earth on a comet. It grew from a large tadpole to a hulking beast by feeding on humanity’s pollution. It made it’s first debut in 1971′s “Godzilla vs. Hedorah”.

King Caesar - an ancient shisa kaiju who served as a guardian to the royal family of Okinawa. It was awakened by a mystical statue and assisted Godzilla in 1974′s Toho film, “Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla”.

King Ghidorah (Showa) - a three headed golden dragon that is known as “Monster Zero”. King Ghidorah is a malevolent space monster that has a long history of attacking other planets and eradicating the population.

It made its first debut in 1964′s, “Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster”.

Megalon - the “Insectoid Seatopian God”. A kaiju that is considered a guardian to an underground kingdom. It was unleashed upon the surface world in 1973′s Godzilla vs. Megalon.

Mechagodzilla - an alien mech that was constructed by the black hole planet 3 aliens. It made its debut in “Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla” in 1974 as a tool to conquer the earth!

Titanosaurus - a gigantic aquatic dinosaur kaiju that was originally featured in 1975′s “Terror of Mechagodzilla”.

Gigan (1972) - the alien cyborg.

Beluga Whale pup - a land cetacean species that inhabits the arctic along with its narwhal cousin. This snow white cetacean is known to be social and is sometimes called the “Sea Canary” because of its high pitched calls.
