Summary of 2023 in the Ukagaka Dream Team

Hey folks! I wanted to write up a summary of all the things our community has gotten up to this year, and celebrate everything we've made and done. A lot happened in 2023!

I wrote the summary as an article for the 伺か Advent Calendar 2023, and you can read it here.

Do check it out, there's a lot to see! If you've been out of the loop for a while, this may be a good way to get caught up. Additionally, if you're not in our Discord server, then there are some things in that article that will probably be new to you.

I think the trajectory the community is on is very good right now, with more and more English resources coming out all the time, making ghost development more accessible and varied. The next few years will be an exciting time for English ukagaka!

If this article goes over well, I'd like to continue writing summaries each year. So, let us know what you think.

I look forward to seeing what 2024 brings for ghosts!

It looks like you're setting the default browser that SSP will open whenever a ghost uses a command related to the browser! This is usually things like opening specific links, running a web search for you, or sometimes just opening your browser in general.

Is there a specific ghost you're using that has browser related commands?

This menu in the preferences won't open your browser itself. You're just selecting the exe file of the browser that you want to act as your default.

Get ready to wish Ink a big 'ol happy birthday!

(because you can!!) Ink's got an update today! Not one.. Not two.. But three cool things for him! Some new dialogue, new interactions, a new accessory! and two! new! shells!

To update him, just click on the "Network Update" tab in his right click menu! Or, you can just drop this file to him, and he'll install it himself! Its okay to replace existing files, no worries!

if you want to see a little birthday surprise on other shells, after the update, switch to whichever shell you like and restart Ink!

Slugcat Ukagaka Re-Release

Ahoy, mates! Came to my attention that I completely neglected to re-release the original Slugcat Ukagaka when my old blog got completely muted.

Anyways, here's the file, fine to re-release to any directories you wish. Just make sure to link back here if possible (provided I don't also get this blog muted or worse).

Make sure to keep circulating the tapes!

You also have full permission to modify this, as I more or less consider it done and dusted. Just make sure to credit me for the original if you're modifying the files that are from the original.

(Also, funny thing, the original release ended up being a weird HTML file of sorts, somehow, which is why it didn't work. Then I had to make an incredibly quick hotfix to fix a shell issue involving the scug going eyeless.)

Hey! Unfortunately, I'm not quite sure what it is you're trying to accomplish! What do you mean when you say "access it through SSP"? What is your goal, and what other window did you "find" it in?

We'll be glad to help out if you can provide us with further context! Screenshots would help a lot.

Unfortunately, there is no working public download for Slugcat that we know of. All of the information we have about the ghost can be found on its page on our wiki, but as you can see it's currently marked as unavailable.

It's up to the developer of the ghost whether a new link is made or not. If a new link is posted to Tumblr we'll be sure to reblog it, so do keep an eye out!

🎀 Ukaghost Community Discord! 🎀

I've got a new Discord Server, this one for Ukagaka/Ghost developers.

This one is different from the Dream Team server. It doesn't have as many resources or people, it's a lot smaller, and it allows NSFW (provided you have the permissions to access those channels)!

This way, developers who are coding ghosts that might not fit in within the "child friendly" rules of the first server can still have a community to share with!

If you have an interest in Ukagakas, feel free to join!

Another Ukagaka Discord server! If you're looking for a smaller server to join, maybe this one will catch your fancy.

A quick clarification, though: The Ukagaka Dream Team Discord server does allow for ghosts with NSFW content to be shared.

Such ghosts must be properly tagged with content warnings, and the NSFW content itself cannot be shown in the server, per server rules. Otherwise, we try not to be restrictive about the kinds of ghosts that can be shared with us!

Help! Unable to close SSP! After downloading another ghost, my current ghosts did not load at all, just showing textbox speech. After deleting the new ghost, and executing SSP once more, (error showing "may lose data" as I was unable to quit without a ghost to right click on) everything works as normal. However, after dismissing them, SSP still remians open, and when I hover over the icon on my taskbar, there are 2 blacked out windows of WDG (The ghost I was trying to get working again).

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "showing textbox speech", but it sounds like you may have had a ghost stuck open that just wasn't loaded in properly. What ghost was this? Does WDG refer to Dr. W.D. Gaster, a ghost you're developing, or some other ghost?

Whatever the case, there are a couple of solutions for a problem like this:

  1. Find the icon of the ghost in your task tray (not the taskbar), and right click it. This gives you access to SSP's menu, and from there you can choose to quit.

Note that clicking "Close" closes the current ghost, and if you have multiple ghosts open, the others will stay open. Click on "Quit" if you want to close all open ghosts at the same time.

2. If SSP is locked up and unresponsive, you can try closing it through Windows Task Manager. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, click SSP in the list of processes, and then click End Task.

3. If you absolutely can't get any other method to work, then the final thing to do is fully restart your computer. This should force SSP to close, and then you can start fresh. I would generally recommend using the "restart" option for any kind of debugging issues like this, since it is a bit different from the "shut down" option in modern versions of Windows.

DUAL GHOST UPDATE COMING IN! Posting this early so you can pick them up before tomorrow, haha. Both Gaster and Temmie have an update! If you already have either of them, you can select "Update" from their right-click menu, hit Ctrl+U when they're the focus, or select "update" from either of their function menus in their left-click menu.

Temmie

  • EVIL TEM IS HERE!! She appears on April Fools and will do EVIL THINGS!! She should disappear when the day is over, if she doesn't plz let me know. @quonit helped a lot with this, haha.
  • Fixed her batting downwards pose.
  • Added back her random roaming dialogue so she'll go for walks more often.
  • Added dialogue for installing calendar skins, headlines, rss feeds, and general other things.

Gaster

  • Pastel Gaster can talk to EVIL Temmie on April Fools! He has a lot of new dialogue with her, hehe.
  • Cleaned up the coding in his surfaces.txt file so he should hopefully load faster.
  • Removed all his .pna files, so he should have a smaller file size. If you notice something looking weird let me know, I did a quick check but I could've missed something.
  • Added the undertale balloon so he should install it alongside him. I also updated the balloon to make a few minor changes! You can just get the balloon by itself to get those if you're not interested in Gaster.
  • Changed the poses for him having a panic attack on the negative route.
  • Added a small thing to make the brothers' fonts show up more reliably if they weren't before. Maybe.
  • Added responses for installing calendar skins, headlines, RSS feeds, and other general things.

Let me know if Gaster loads faster! I'm not sure if what I did will speed him up or not but hopefully it will.

ATM Machine v2.0.0

An update to a ghost that everyone here definitely knew about, because I definitely didn't just not post the original version to Tumblr!

Do you want to work for a bank and service their ATM? No? Well now with the power of ukagaka, you can! Work your boring day job and earn a small but steady flow of cash, while listening to annoying bank advertisements. Or maybe there's another way to earn funds more quickly...?

Changelog:

  • Added custom artwork for the shell. The original clipart is now available as a separate shell called Joypixels.
  • Added a custom balloon, called Unyu Bank Notes. If you already have ATM Machine installed, you will need to install the balloon separately from here.
  • The balloon's 6 color options can be changed between in ATM's menu.
  • Added 200 dialogues.
  • Added 2 minigames, which can be accessed after you "log in".
  • Migrated to the Simplicity Template. As such, the ghost now has responses to various SSP functions, the same as Simplicity.
  • Updated to YAYA Tc571-8.
  • Added crime.

SSP Angel v1.1.0

It's SSP Angel's release anniversary! 🥳 🎉

To celebrate, we've brought you an update with corrections to various information, additional glossary terms, a ton of new content, an optional floating animation for Angel, and more!

Some highlights from the changelog:

  • Added ~100 new non-tip dialogues, bringing the total to 200.
  • Updated some incorrect information and wording, in the tip dialogues and in the menus.
  • Corrected/updated glossary definitions: AYA, Dressup, Freeshell, Ghost/Ukagaka/Nanika, Interval, Kawari, MAKOTO, SHIORI, Sakura Script, Satori, Surface, Ukadoc.
  • New glossary definitions: Animation, Element, Middleware, Owner draw menu, and Supplement.
  • Added new questions to the "How do I" menu: Fast forwarding through text, Using the ghost explorer.
  • Added the ability to ask who they are in the question menu, to have them reintroduce themselves.
  • Added a new troubleshooting option related to installation trouble. This information was originally in the "How do I" menu and has been moved.
  • Added a dressup to Angel that allows her to float up and down.
  • Added a response for switching to the PH Gijinka shell, and responses to that shell's hat dressup.

When you say "English version", are you referring to a translation created for that ghost, or are you referring to SSP's language setting?

If it's a ghost with a translation created for it, then please tell us which ghost/translation it is so that we can assist you! We won't be able to help without knowing specifically what's giving you trouble.

If you're referring to SSP's language setting, then that's normal! SSP's language setting is for SSP's menu only, ghosts themselves are only able to speak in the language their developer wrote them in. There are ghosts out there that come in more than one language or have a translation available for download, but it is not many due to the difficulty that translating ghosts presents.

Not only do the words have to be translated, but most ghosts will include cultural references that don't make sense outside their culture, or they may have in-jokes that only make sense to a small group of people. Often there are concepts that just cannot be translated at all, not without a separate guide to explain what they mean. Localization like this can be very challenging!

If you want to try machine translation, it may help you be able to navigate a ghost's menus, and get some of the gist of what they're saying. The drawback is, machine translation is not able to do the localization, so a lot of ghosts will not make much sense or the full meaning will be lost. But if you want to try it, there are currently two ghosts that can help: Ukatranslator and simultaneous-interpreter.

Good luck to you! Again, if what you're having trouble with is a ghost that does have a translation created for it, then let us know which it is so that we can assist! Any details you can provide us would be helpful in resolving your issue.
