What if the creator of your favorite yaoi ship waited 20 years to reveal that they are, in fact, cousins. It's possible, it's frightening, it happened to Kaishin.

Good morning, who wants to analyze the way Shinichi treats Conan like a completely separate entity than himself and how his refusal to accept that Conan is a part of him is holding back his character development and growth?

Shinichi absolutely views Conan as a curse (though I personally think of the relationship in more medical terms, like Conan's a condition or illness, or using the terms of a ghost story, where Conan is haunting Shinichi though perhaps parasitic terms would fit as well). I'm still early on in my rewatch but what on brought this line of thinking was Episode 49 "The Diplomat Murder Case (Part 2)", the first time we're introduced to Heiji and find out that "Conan" is a reversible condition. And we get this scene...

The wording here is so... He could have said something like "am I turning back into a kid again," but instead he chose to say "that kid" and "am I turning back into Conan again", as if Conan was his own person and not just another facet of Shinichi. He personifies Conan to such a degree and refuses to acknowledge that it's still him, with all his memories and experiences. And the framing of this scene too, with Conan over Shinichi's shoulder like a lingering specter.

There's also these frames from opening 4 I believe, that I haven't been able to get out of my head...

They're standing on opposite sides of a mirror, and I genuinely expected the reflection to show the other version of each but this is such a clear and distinctly drawn separation between the two "characters" that I never picked up on when I was watching before. They are completely separated and unable to meet, both literally (duh) and metaphorically.

Conan being framed as a "parasite" is SUCH a good perspective. He's literally sucking the life out of Shinichi and is slowly taking over his life.

The fact that Shinichi always says something along the lines of "I'm turning back into Conan" instead of "I'm shrinking back down again" is so fascinating. He says this again in the Shinigami case.

Also I never really thought about those frames from OP4 before, I'm so glad you pointed those out! Conan having his own reflection perfectly illustrates how Shinichi thinks of Conan as a completely different existence.

Only at certain points you can see both of them at the same time. They're clearly shown to be the same, standing back to back, but Shinichi has put up this barrier/mirror that deflects this fact. ED49 also has some interesting frames:

I believe someone else made a post about this but I can't find it for some reason

The imagery of the cracks is reminiscent of a broken mirror, as if Shinichi broke it, lost in his identity. It's really telling how most of the reflections are of Conan instead of Shinichi. Shinichi is left looking back, maybe wishing he could go back in the past. In the next pics, the gear is turning, but Shinichi is completely static, not even blinking. He's frozen, and life is continuing without him.

I'd also like to overanalyze look at the Shinichi and Conan illustration inside each manga volume:

These two in particular are ones that get me thinking about the differences between them. Conan is shown to have the upper hand on Shinichi. The earlier volumes simply have Conan and Shinichi doing the same pose/activity, but more recently they started to differentiate themselves (as Shinichi spends more time as Conan the more of an identity Conan gains)

So yeah, Conan is Shinichi, Shinichi is Conan, but Shinichi absolutely refuses to accept this fact.

hee hee i can share these now

1 of 2 for the DCMK FF Server Noir Zine! @magmatickobaian and I collaborated to create a series of film noir-style posters of the first few movies. <3

We opted to limit ourselves to the first six. Skyscraper has a special place in my heart for doing a lot of things right as the first movie of the franchise. My appreciation for it has only gone up over the years, particularly in how comparatively grounded and high-stakes it feels compared to the most recent installments ;.;

What can I say about the moonlight sonata murder case that hasn't been said already?

In place of saying something original, have this:

Have you ever stopped to think about what it would be like if Eisuke was still in their class? Cause I have.
