But one is a stranger, a woman she notices while she sits on a bench, gathering herself. It’s a type of woman she has never seen before, because there are no old women in Barbieland. When Barbie looks at her, she finds her beautiful and tells her so. The woman already knows. Suddenly Barbie, the fraught aspirational figure, has beheld someone she might aspire to be, and it is a radiantly content nonagenarian, reading a newspaper on a Los Angeles bench, who knows what she’s worth.

“The idea of a loving God who’s a mother, a grandmother — who looks at you and says, ‘Honey, you’re doing OK’ — is something I feel like I need and I wanted to give to other people,” Gerwig says. When it was suggested that this scene, which Gerwig calls a “transaction of grace,” might be cut for time, she remembers thinking: “If I cut that scene, I don’t know why I’m making this movie. If I don’t have that scene, I don’t know what it is or what I’ve done.

Trek introduced us to Pike as the guy who will throw himself on an overloading phaser to protect people who are keeping him prisoner, and it introduced us to Una as the girl who will threaten to overload a phaser and blow everyone up because someone's trying to keep Chris prisoner. And if that doesn't sum up everything about these two characters I don't know what does.

It's not quite breakfast time yet at ten past 0400, but his hands need something to do. Una likes omelets. He's got eggs to use up before they go bad. And bacon, he might have some bacon left over from his last breakfast meeting. Coffee, too, he should start a pot of coffee for them. He's plating two fluffy, yellow omelets when the light from his personal terminal finally goes dark. From the kitchen, he watches as she reaches for her uniform, then hesitates, drawing back as she makes eye contact with him. Chris holds up her plate in invitation, tries to smile. "Got time for a bite, Captain?" he asks. "Quick one." She doesn't pull the uniform on though, exiting his sleeping area still wrapped in her robe, distraction pulling the corners of her mouth down. "Classified?" he asks, pouring them each a cup of coffee and handing her the one without room for cream or sugar. Una hums in affirmation, taking a generous sip from her mug.

Series: Part 2 of Last Resort

(Hey, it was only an 8-month gap between chapters this time!)

Chapter 23! The penultimate instalment, in which Una and Gabriel somehow get away with it.

If you’ve been watching these posts appear sporadically over the last, er, four years and thought to yourself “hmm, that seems interesting/weird but I can’t put up with a publishing schedule that appears to have been designed by some kind of concussed time traveller” (valid), then might I humbly suggest that now is a great time to dive in and start reading the whole thing - because the final chapter, ‘lost and found’, is written and edited and will be published next Tuesday.

The final chapter lands in two days! You still have time to read it all before then! I believe in you!
