”Why are you pushing me away?”

            Humans were incredibly elaborate, utterly confounding creatures. They cried for an indiscernible variety of reasons ( even when they appeared to be happy ), they grew immeasurably sad over things they had no control over – immovable truths such as death, and most confusing of all …they strove for companionship over everything else. Most even seemed to require it to survive, or at least to believe that they did. 

            Demons were not social creatures – at least, not the strong ones. Often times the weak ones would band together in an effort to surmount their lack of strength by combining their efforts ; a feasible way for the unfit to persist in a “survival of the fittest” society. But demons such as himself, beings with immense power, enough to tear a hold clean through the dimensions with nothing more than his own strength – paramount creatures like Neuro did not require the strength of others. Therefore he’d had no need for companionship, for the simple reason that there was nothing another party could give him that he would benefit from. 

            Until he met her. …It should come as no great shock that the above world had been vastly different than how he had imagined it to be – but that was untrue. Perhaps, rather than the world itself …it was the humans themselves who were so much more than the demon had ever anticipated. Initially he had only seen them as livestock ; potential mysteries with nothing more to offer him than a meal. But the longer his time in this higher plain of existence drew on, the more he discovered in regard of humanity : their depth, their curiosity, their passion, their sheer and unlimited potential – and her. 

            She was no exception to the rule ; rather, she had become the pinnacle of it, a prime example of the epitome of her species. So great had her evolution been that she had risen from the level of a worthless fascade to his cause and come up to be a creature he held fairly highly in regard – he would have to, to place his life in her hands on the multiple occasions that he had. He depended on her knowledge of the human heart, and her talent at sympathizing with its plight in order to survive – she knew the facets of his personality and the true depth of his nature in ways that no other being on any dimensional plain did. She had secured a place at his side that no other creature, human or demon or otherwise, had ever been able to achieve in his eons of extant ; she had become a partner to a creature who had never required anything of another. 

            …In truth, she was the single most significant creature that had ever existed to him, outside of himself.

            And yet in spite of all this knowledge that was so incredibly obvious to him, here she was – with hurt in her gaze and a tremor of rejection in her voice that the demon found himself incapable of discerning the origin of. Malachite swirled with beryls and bright veridian greens in his gaze as it assessed her, balking at the indignity and senselessness of her query through a wise and subdued expression. His gloved hands folded neatly behind his back as he regarded her like one might a child who was simply too young and ignorant of the world’s ways to see an incredibly simple truth, his voice laced with an undertone of gentle reprimand that was reserved only for when she had a step to take forward in her ongoing evolution.
