Jack knowing last becomes A Thing, though nobody’s really sure where it started. It may have been Shitty who, when they finally told him, claimed he’d always known it was going to happen, that it was inevitable. It might have been Johnson, who tweeted Bitty congratulations and said something about the tropes of romance that made Bitty scratch his head and shrug. However it starts, Bitty likes to tease Jack that he was the last to clue in that 1) he had feelings and 2) those feelings were reciprocated.

Until he visits the Zimmermanns for the first time.

“You know,” Alicia says over dinner one night, “there was a while there where I thought the two of you would be like ships passing in the night.”

Bitty laughs and blushes and smiles at Jack next to him. “Good thing this one caught a clue,” he says, and Jack reaches for his hand under the table, squeezes it tight.

Alicia blinks at him. “Jack? But he was flirting with you since summer before his senior year! It’s right there on Twitter.”

Bitty stares at her, then Jack, then Bob just for good measure. “I–no, he was just chirping me,” he says. “He wasn’t flirting.”

“I was trying to.” Jack huffs a laugh and rubs the back of his neck with his free hand. “Had to get a little more direct, apparently.”

Bitty stares some more, mind blown.

Later that night, Jack asleep and curled beside him, Bitty scrolls through his Twitter, reads back through each documented chirp, each moment where Jack paid for coffee or frozen yogurt or specifically sought Bitty out. He lies there in the dark, listening to Jack breathing steadily beside him, his whole worldview rocked.

He nudges Jack with his arm. “Jack!” he whispers intently. “Jack! Are you saying we could’ve been doing this before you graduated? Is that what I am getting? That we wasted months because *I* was apparently the last to know?”

Jack blinks at him under mussed bangs, gaze slow and sleepy. He reaches for Bitty, pulling him close, tucking up behind him until they’re spooning and all Bitty knows is Jack’s arms around him and Jack’s chest against him and Jack’s mouth against his neck. “It wasn’t wasted,” he says, and Bitty melts against him.
