Fantasy Wardrobe: Popular Gowns of History

Fashion is one of my favourite worldbuilding components and choosing which way I want characters to look, is one part of research that is more fun than work. The use of different styles give each culture a defined feel and could act as a symbol of all kinds of lands in your WIP. Since it is your WIP, you can play with different elements of the gowns and pay fast and loose with the styles.

(If you want a more in-depth look at the structure of gowns and the composition of gowns have a look here)

Kirtle

The kirtle was technically an under dress to be worn under a grander gown though some women wore it as a gown itself over their chemise. The kirtle could be made of any material and worn by any woman of any rank. It could be laced at the back, front and even, though rarely, the side.

Sarafan

The sarafan is a traditional Russian dress worn mainly by the peasants (since Peter the Great banned traditional Russian costumes from the nobility in order to drag them toward Westernization). It rather resembles a pinafore and often worm under a lighter gown like a slip. During the reign of Nicholas I, the sarafan was allowed to be worn by the women of the Royal court. They fancied up the sarafan, adding a popular boat-line neckline and long dragging sleeves. It is one of my favourite looks of all time.

Gamurra

This was the most popular gown in Renaissance Italy. The waist was high, usually pleated beneath the bust and had a square neckline. The gown would be worn over the lady's chemise and corset and perhaps another under dress. It was worn by both nobles and commoners.

Burgundian Gowns/Houppelande

These gowns were high-waisted, belted underneath the bust. The neckline was classically shaped in a V, often showing off another fabric underneath. These gowns were worn by highborn women.

The Farthingale

This gown is named after the structure that held it in place. The skirts would be stretched into a dome-like, bell-jar shape, often fitted about the waist over a bum-roll (stop sniggering) a piece of padded fabric hung about the waist to widen the skirt's distance from the bodice. You know what they say, the bigger the Farthingale the bigger the rank. Worn through the 15th & 16th centuries.

Robe à l'Anglaise

This gown is the classic silhouette of the 18th century. The sleeves usually stopped at the elbow. The neckline was usually cut square. The bodice could be done up in front by laces or buttons. The skirts usually were supported by panniers and often reached staggering girth.

Robe à la Française

ImageImage

This French gown was similar to the Robe à l'Anglaise only that the back featured a train made from pleated fabric that draped from the shoulders to the floor. The gown often opened at the front to show another material beneath.

Robe à la Polonaise

The Robe à la Polonaise was similar to the last two gowns excepting a skirt that featured an overskirt which was picked up and pleated to show the under skirt.

Chiton

This dress is often seen in Roman or Greek art. The Doric version was made by draping material over the body and fastened at the shoulder by clasps The Ionic chiton version was draped about the body and pinned at the waist.

Alright so this is more of a personal note than anything, but the order of when the men came to the mansion is:

1.) Obviously Comte goes first since in Leonardo’s “The Day that he Came to the Mansion”/TDTHCTTM, it’s said that Comte is the one who had it built in the first place

2.) Shakespeare is next, since in Leo’s TDTHCTTM, he’s there before Leo even arrives

3.) Leonardo is third, since as once again seen in his TDTHCTTM and also just in various other routes, him, Comte, and Will were there for some time before the others came along

4.) In Vincent’s TDTHCTTM, there’s only Leo and Comte present, and there’s no mention of anyone else living there, since Will would’ve already moved out by this time. Since there’s no one else here, I think Vincent goes here

5.) In Theo’s TDTHCTTM, there’s no one else there but Vincent and Comte (and presumably Leo as stated previously), and Comte only says “there’s SOMEONE I want you to meet”, not multiple people. So I think Theo and Vincent were actually some of the first residents to be chosen

6.) Now, there’s no TDTHCTTM for Dazai, but in Arthur’s TDTHCTTM, there are only Comte, Leo, Vincent, Theo, and Dazai in the mansion, so he must go here

7.) Theo says that Arthur came to the mansion a few years after him, so they’re actually more spaced out than I thought. Anyway, as stated previously, Arthur HAS to go here since he’s the next resident after everyone I previously listed as seen in his TDTHCTTM. Not much to say about this one, he just goes here

8.) In Isaac’s TDTHCTTM, both Arthur and Dazai are present. Other than that, his presumably has all the characters I previously stated, but Sebastian is not present. Mozart’s has some of the same characters present, but Sebastian IS ALSO present, meaning that Isaac must come before Mozart since Sebastian isn’t there yet

9.) Personally, I think Jean goes here. His TDTHCTTM doesn’t have anyone else but Comte in it, and there’s no mention of anyone else, so it’s unclear just when he came to the mansion, other than the fact that there’s no mention of Sebastian which is why he could honestly go anywhere before that. Although, if Mozart came a year before the current events of the story, then that would leave a pretty narrow time frame for both Jean AND Napoleon to join within that year. And with how full of despair Jean is, I feel like he’s been here longer than at least a year. Other than that, I’m not really sure where he goes. Comte doesn’t mention any other guest when introducing Leo, Dazai, Theo, and Vincent to Arthur, so perhaps at least somewhere after Arthur. Still, I think at least him and Isaac’s placements are interchangeable

10.) For previously stated reasons, Sebastian has to appear after Isaac and before Mozart, but he’s not present in Jean’s TDTHCTTM (and you think the history fanatic would be or at least helping out) so I’m gonna say he goes after Jean

11.) Again, as previously stated, some characters before this are present, and since Sebastian is also there, Mozart must go here. Also it was said in his route (I think when they’re taking shelter from the rain but I could be wrong) that he’s only been at the mansion for a year, so it makes sense that he’d be one of the last residents

12.) And as stated many times, Napoleon is the last person (before MC) to come to the mansion, so he goes here

☆ ikevamp boys and their signature:👀

| Part 1|🍃🌼

☆Note:

It's from their new year update so enjoy.❤

Comte de. Saint Germain

I love his signature it's really classic and delicate.

Leonardo Da Vinci

I think it's really spontaneous and kinda messy.

Napoleon Bonaparte

Napoleon what is this exactly it's really messy and random.

Arthur Conan Doyle

I love this too he didn't add his first name just shorten his name with a letter.

Dazai Osamu

Sharp and thin he also signate his name in Japanese.

Sebastian

Okay... I have nothing to say about his signature it's simple yet readable.

The Original Scholars

bloodborne au and all that

ok so I might as well try to explain my concept on it.. in a vague way similar to how bloodborne’s lore itself is told, bc I think that’s the charm of it and overexplaining wouldn’t give it justice. The game likes to give its lore through item descriptions, so I try to imitate that.

Might update and add to this in the future, look out.

Original scholars

The scholars of the Old College were the first to find advancement in the Higher learning. Their teachings started from their delving of the deep catacomb labyrinths below Paris. It gave them path to the Cosmic knowledge, the insight to realise the existence of the Great Ones.

Old Blood

Deep beneath the labyrinths are the tomb of gods where the old knowledge is found and the blood alongside it. It was the main foundation of the Healing Church, whose conception the result of the breaking up between College scholars, some favouring further use of it while the other complete abstinence.

“The blood has great potent healing properties and also the capability of evolving mankind.”

Vlad

Former scholar and the founder of the Healing Church. Forbidden knowledge led him to see the inevitable catastrophe that one day will befall civilization. Thus he believed the Old Blood as a way to transcend humanity, through transfusing it into human bodies. The Church promised a cure of any disease, and citizens flock to them for healing.

Comte of St Germain

Provost of the Old College. Held a great distrust towards the blood that led to the falling out between him and Vlad, and the breaking up of the scholars. Believed further pursuit of the Cosmic knowledge and establishing contact with the Great Ones should be the way of ascension instead.

Leonardo

Close friend of the provost. A dedicated scholar that prefers the field-work side of things. Involved in the discovery of the Fishing Hamlet, folks that worships a stranded Great One who came from the deep ocean. It is rumoured that both the college and the church’s pursuits contributed to its desecration, and Leonardo possibly took part in it, being a proficient hunter himself.

The Scrouge of Beasts

The all-healing Old Blood brought a side-effect. Bloodthirsty beasts born out of men started to plague the city, terrorising folks at night. Hunters are deployed by the church to get rid of these beasts, but they soon too become addicted to the blood and hunt itself, continuing the cycle of beasts.

They burned part of the city down and locked the beasts in one place. The church closed their doors after, but its likely they continued their work of ascending humanity in secret, perhaps even more ambitiously.

Meanwhile, the abandoned hunters still looks for preys.

The Dream

A plane of reality materialised by the Moon Presence (a Great One) upon the Comte’s eventual successful contact with them. He became tied to the Dream and the Moon through their “contract”, with conditions that he never quite understood. This led him to seek more great scholars and men to be binded into the dream too, and figure out the Cosmic will.

Anyone bound to the Dream are unable to truly die, waking up inside it every time they did and can go back to the waking world if they so choose. A mansion stood lonely upon single piece of land. One cannot venture further than this.

One day a strange man showed up inside the mansion, not knowing to agree to any sort of contract. The Comte has long since fell into a mysterious slumber, so he couldn’t have invited him here….
