Cudjo Lewis, the last surviving captive of the last slave ship to bring Africans to the U.S.Ā
Itās so significant too that this narrative was collected by Zora Neale Hurston, one of the greatest authors and anthropologists of her time. She was shunned by theĀ āgatekeepersā of both of these professions, largely because of her Blackness, her womanhood, and her uncompromising commitment to honoring and showcasing both in her works. She died penniless and alone in a state-run institution in 1960. All of her works had gone out of publication by then. It took more than a decade before she was rediscovered. A young author by the name of Alice Walker had come across her work and was deeply inspired by it. āIn 1973, after an exhaustive search, Walker came across Hurstonās unmarked grave in Ft. Pierce, Fla. She purchased a headstone for Hurstonās tomb and had it inscribed āA Genius of the South.āā
It is through Zora Neale Hurstonās pioneering sacrifice, and the acceptance of that inheritance by Alice Walker that we have found this missing piece of our history. Without the courageous and unfailing work of Black women, we wouldnāt have Cudjo Lewisās story. We are slowly regaining a narrative thatās been hidden from us, one that continues to be lied about. Trust Black women to lead the way.
Honestly knowing how awful Lea Michele is it doesnt surprise me that Cory Monteith was on drugs (whether or not it was a real or pr relationship)
I know he had a drug problem ever since he was a teen, and that was because of a turbulent upbringing but...honestly, between being on Glee and having to put up with Lea Michele, it would not shock me if it stressed him the fuck out and that made things so much worse.
We know that the Glee set was NOT a healthy place to be for anyone, let alone someone struggling with a drug addiction. Naya talked about in her book how toxic being on the set was, especially since Lea was Ryan Murphyās special favourite, and Iāve seen people who were extras talking about how miserable it could be. There was even one person who wrote a piece about the sheer amount of extras and actors who were actively engaging in bulimic purging, and how it was a big problem because it was just accepted/encouraged, but I canāt find it now so...maybe take that with a grain of salt. Iām pretty sure Naya also mentioned having anorexia while on the show, so thereās that to unpack too. A LOT of people have spoken about how manipulative and horrible it was to work with Lea Michele - both on Glee and in general. Itās no surprise that a lot of her co-stars have either called her out publicly or have liked tweets doing so. Itās not just her old co-stars on Glee, itās extras and people who met her back when she did Spring Awakening etc.:
What I find very telling is the people whoāve said how horrible she is vs what an absolute angel Cory was:
The other cast must have been in HELL putting up with her and her bullshit - as I said, sheās always been Ryan Murphyās special darling, and as such speaking out against her would have resulted in them losing their jobs.
I mean:
Iām pretty sure Naya and Alex Newell have both said they were cut out of Glee because Lea told Ryan to or some shit. Like the feud between Naya and Lea, itās obvious Ryan cut Naya/Santana out because of Lea and wanting to keep her happy.
Obviously sheās not solely to blame for Cory and his drug problem, he was the one who continued to use drugs - and I say that in the kindest way possible because he was also really fighting that addiction and he even went to rehab a couple of months before his passing, but no one physically made him do them...he needed help, but I donāt think we can blame it all solely on her, if that makes sense.
But yeah...if this is the kind of diva bullshit the cast were putting up with for six years, and being too scared to say anything in fear of losing their jobs, I honestly feel so sorry for them, and it wouldnāt surprise me if that had a hand in driving Cory back to the drugs. I feel so sorry for him - he deserved so much better.

I want to add the full video here. Itās a great debate and a lot of the students bring up excellent points. Itās also a great example of respectful, thoughtful conversations.
Lil Matt Damonās name is actually Christopher Justice!
I have long said that in order for any comedy to truly succeed as a story, there has to be meat beneath the jokes. There has to be that moment when it is not funny any more.
This. This is that moment.
#honestly even though this is one of the best scripts there ever has beenĀ Ā #that is the greatest lineĀ Ā #itās /groundbreaking/ in terms of how it frames vengeance quests; temptation beats; inigo as a comedic figure throughout the movieĀ Ā #you know because this is a happy book (film) that inigo will get his revengeĀ Ā #but will he get JUSTICEĀ Ā #will he get ABSOLUTIONĀ Ā #will he get CATHARSISĀ Ā #those are the things we donāt knowĀ Ā #and that line sells it more than any of the previous sceneĀ (x)
