Yuri tries to write down as much as he possibly can about his dreams when he wakes up, he usually doesn't manage to get much down before he forgets, but a few lines here and there begin to craft..... something.... atleast....

He'll go over his notes sometimes before getting out of bed too, when the depression hits particularly heavily, but he can rarely make sense of any of it

What the hell was with people in this town!? First the mobster attacked him, now this… total stranger was attacking him…
Yuri slowly tilted his head back and stared at the bag of flour that had bore the brunt of the damage, the admittedly shoddy bag having split open upon falling to the ground, white powder spilled out all around him and… sadly… on him as well…
Sighing quietly in what could only be described as resigned dissappointment, he slowly sat up, rubbing the back of his neck
“It’s ok, I understand,” he replied, brushing himself off as he rose to his feet, one final glance to the flour, before he turned back to the stranger
“I’m sorry you’re on edge, I um… I have an anxiety disorder, so I understand… sometimes getting your blood sugar in a good place helps with that, I uh… I own a bakery… want a cookie on the house?”

White powder exploded in her face and for a second Hope took a step back in surprise. Once the dust settled, she recognized it as flour and not dust and realized just how much of an overreaction that she’d had.

Hope’s mouth hung open for a moment as she tried to think of an explanation for the pulverized flour bag, but the stranger spoke before she could. She’d expected yelling or anger, but instead all she got was… kindness. She couldn’t remember the last time someone had seen her rage and responded with something other than fear or a reprimand besides her family. What was left of it. This hatred… this vengeance… this is your father. Headmaster Saltzman’s words still echoed in her mind years later.

“I don’t – I don’t have an anxiety disorder!” she snapped and took a step forward before she realized her mistake and reeled backwards. “Shit…” She ran her hands through her hair. “Please, just… don’t call the cops okay. I’ll pay for the flour.” Hope opened up her wallet and saw money that she was sure Aunt Rebekah had snuck in there. She wadded up the 50 dollar bill and reached out to hand it to him. “Here. This should cover it and whatever else.”

Image

Yep, it was this town, it was this town full of jumpy, on-edge people who made Yuri’s constant near nervous break downs look like a garden of zen

It had to be something in the water...

“I wasn’t meaning to imply that you did,” he replied calmly, sighing as he stared down at the money, a little unsure of what to do, fifty dollars was... alot more than the price of flour....

“I just meant... I understand what it feels like to... feel like you have needles poking under your skin.... spiders crawling around in your head... like there’s little barbs of electricity in your blood, zapping you everytime you move... I get it,”

Staring down at the money, breifly, then back at the girl, an idea suddenly began to form, maybe he wasn’t too far off with comparing the stranger to Kaz...

“This is far, far too much,” he noted

“Please let me atleast treat you to something at the bakery in return for your generosity, I have to go back there anyway and check on my dog before I can get another bag of flour, since I don’t like leaving her there alone for very long, why don’t you come with me? I um... have coffee, if that’s more suited to you then sweets?”

“Do any of us really ever end up where we want to be?”
Yuri wasn’t the type to just blurt things out like that, but after taking a very rare day off of work- a necessity, due to a few repairs being needed at the bakery- he had decided to come to the museum, always having enjoyed quiet forms of entertainment the most, and found himself in front of the painting, somewhat captivated by it himself, just barely enough to not be paying attention to his surroundings
“Um… sorry, that…that was bleak,” he mumbled, rubbing his neck
“You probably weren’t actually asking either, I’m sorry,”

“No, it’s quite alright” she said smiling at him and took a breath as she thought about it, was she where she thought she would be? pretty much but was she where she wanted to be? That was a different question “I don’t know…I guess life is unexpected and it changed so much maybe you think you want something but when you get something else you see that you do like that too..does that make sense?” probably not “where would you like to be?”

Image
Image

“It does,” Yuri nodded in confirmation

“I never really thought about baking as a career choice when I was growing up, but... I do like it,”

Even though it felt off, even though it felt hollow, like there was something missing....

“I-... I used to skate, competitively I mean... I know it sounds childish but I.... wish that I still did, I used to dream of the Olympics and international gold medals... I never got far enough to justify the expense so I had to quit when I was a teenager, but... if I had my perfect world, I’d.. like to be there, living that dream, and you? Where would you like to be?”

Hm, maybe Yuri was wrong, maybe they could see eye to eye on something after all
Maybe
“Ok,” he said simply, completely unbothered by the threat as he finished the stitch, snipping away the extra thread and setting his tools neatly aside before standing up
“Ofcourse, I should have one more roll in the back room,”
He was going to have to make sure he kept up with the shop’s first aid supplies, especially if he could expect Kaz to be any kind of frequent visitor, maybe he’d upgrade to a higher level kit….
Stepping into the back again, he reached up to the high shelf to get the gauze and not noticing until it was too late that Veeya had used the opportunity to sprint past him and go see their new guest
“V-Veeya! Bad dog, don’t go bothering him!”
Though truth be told he couldn’t care less about Kaz being bothered so much as he cared that Veeya not get snapped at again, but he supposed as long as he kept her from getting too close…
Hurrying out after, he quickly tailed the little dog, following her back out to his pseudo-patient and settling on the floor beside him again, keeping a close eye on Veeya as she toddled closer, seemingly unbothered by the situation as she sat down by Kaz’s head, tail wagging and head tilting with curiosity, as if wondering what he was doing on the floor

It was the dog again, and Kaz didn’t quite have the energy to force back the slight smile that graced his features - the real one. When he was being at his most cruel, when he was playing games with people, generally being an asshole, he had a kind of cold smile that seemed almost eerie. His features only accented it - angled cheekbones causing him to look almost skeletal. It was worse when he was younger and had far less meals, smiles making him look increasingly gaunt and sunken eyes from too many sleepless nights and too much coffee. Those were the smiles that creeped people out, and were intended to.

Image

His genuine smiles were few and far between, and this one wasn’t the largest - it took a lot to pull a full smile out of his features. But the slight softening of his face wouldn’t quite go away as the dog plodded up to him, and let his hand drift to pet the dog’s fluffy fur. Immediately, she seemed to take this as an invitation to hop into his lap, turning a couple of times before snuggling up to his stomach - luckily, on the opposite side of his wound.

For a moment, he froze up. It was shockingly easy to forget how little contact he had with anyone - including dogs. That warmth came from a body rather than cold rot. It felt good in a way he hadn’t felt in a long time, and despite all other circumstances, he felt the need to cuddle it closer.

Cuddle? Kaz Brekker? He needed the strongest cup of coffee he could find, or maybe just to shove coffee grounds down his gullet until the softness was deemed bearable. “It’s fine. Small price to pay for medical care.”

Image

Ok, so it was actually kind of nice seeing the tough as nails gangster smiling and cuddling with Veeya, there is a small chance Yuri was actually warming up to him- hard not to, from one introverted dog person to another

“That’s true, I uh.. I don’t take insurance but I do take dog people for free,”

Was that a dumb thing to say? Probably, acting tough didn’t make Yuri less socially awkward, wich was.... not good for him but atleast he didn’t think he was in the sort of company who was especially keen on social constructs and manners so he supposed it could be worse

“You know, poodles are one of the most intellegent dogs out there, they’re also so highly emotional that they’re the only breed that can literally die of loneliness,” he mused, carefully unrolling the gauze and measuring out a good strip before snipping it with the scissors

“I think alot of people underestimate them as companions because they’re so widely known as show dogs, but I think they’re alot more emotionally intuitive than most people are... not that that’s saying much, I don’t really think highly of humans as a species,”

Yuri didn’t usually talk this much- not to mention this honestly, used to putting on fake pleasantries from years of working in the hospitality business, plus having been raised in a society that valued politeness above all else- but he still hadn’t quite figured out yet what to make of Kaz, certainly hadn’t become comfortable with him yet, and the idea of being totally silent around someone who could easily snap his neck just didn’t sit well with Yuri- even if said neck-snapper was currently being cuddled by a ten-pound ball of fluff

no one had ever accused loki of being too nice. quite the opposite, in fact. he was always a little too harsh, too brash, too honest. which made him wonder, as he zoned out of the conversation at hand, how he’d wound up locked in a one-sided conversation with a stranger. maybe said stranger had seen him working the bar before or maybe he just had bartender vibes even off the clock. which, if you asked him, was incredibly unfortunate. bartender seemed to be synonymous with therapist to some people and he sure as shit didn’t get paid enough for that.

so here he was, sat at the bar on his day off with a stranger pouring out their heart to him about… something. loki’d stopped really listening by now, eyes scanning the room for someone - anyone - that he could fake a friendship with to get some piece of mind. thankfully he didn’t have to wait long before someone new sat down on the other side of him. with an incredibly fake smile towards the first stranger, he offered a “sorry! my friend’s here. hope that shit works out for you, though, bud.” before he turned to the newcomer. “hey! i will literally pay for your drink if you chat with me long enough for that guy to fuck off. he’s been talking at me for a fucking hour and if i have to listen to him drone on any longer i might actually lose it.”

Image
Image

Oh.... wow...... this was unexpected....

Yuri had just wanted to come in and kill twenty minutes before picking up Veeya from the groomer, just have a drink and do a little online shopping to get some pre-pride month ingredients....

He looked like a deer in the headlights of life, but he also could really sympathize with the problem, Yuri was something of a loner, so he understood how shitty it could feel to get stuck in a conversation you couldn’t easily escape from

“...Wanna see pictures of my dog?”

It was all he could think of, and without waiting for an answer, he pulled his phone out and immediately clicked on the photo album, shifting the phone so the stranger could see the photos

“You can um... just flip through if you want.... the most recent ones are from yesterday, she’s getting her hair cut right now though so um, she’s about to look like the pictures from early last month,”

God he felt awkward and he wanted to die

The museum was somewhere that although she loved she rarely could find time to go, she always told herself she would make time because frankly the museum here was certainly amazing it had art pieces that some would. think would be in bigger places. So now she had actually made time to go and enjoy some time just looking at art, she had never been particularly good at it so she’d live vicaursly through the ones that actually could create amazing things. She stopped in front of The Accolade by Edmund Leighton, she always felt drawn to it, almost as if she could relate -a silly thing  of course- “I wonder if the knight really wanted to be a knight” she said to herself.

Hope was jumpy these days. She couldn’t pinpoint why, but she was on her way back from her shift at the Lounge, the hair on the back of her neck stood up suddenly and she whirled around and tackled someone to the ground, fist pulled back to punch them in the face. She deflated as soon as she did it. “Shit, I’m sorry… I’m just… on edge,” she said with a sigh, before realizing her full body weight was still on top of the other person. Hope stood up and staggered a step back, hands up to show she didn’t mean any harm.

Yuri is excellent at dancing, he's a trained ballerina and was actually a dancer before he was a skater, dance was certainly his backup career for a long time!

He's also an excellent pole dancer

One of the few places in town that Imogen didn’t mind visiting was the small bakery run by a sweet man and his dog. The smells always reminded her of the sweet scents she used to enjoy from back home, before Echo Springs and before the migraines when she used to enjoy going to the market with her few friends to pick fresh fruit. Today was one of her better days, so she decided to take a detour to the bakery to pick something out for her landlady as a thank you. “Hi,” she said with a small wave when she entered the increasingly familiar setting. “It smells great in here. Bakin’ anything special today?”

Image
Image

Smiling happily at one of his regulars, Yuri turned away from the tray of cupcakes he was sliding into the glass case, shaking his head

“Not in particular, but I have some cinnamon apple turnovers in the oven right now, cinnamon is always pretty fragerant so you’re probably picking up on that,”

Yuri himself couldn’t quite tell when things smelled much different from usual, spending all of his time in the bakery, he got used to the delightfully sweet scents very quickly

“What about you? In for anything special today?”

…Ah…. well this was a little awkward
“Um, actually this is my first time here… the diner I usually go to just closed… but the bright side is, I don’t know what the menu is either, so I’ll be seeing it for the first time, if you want I could read it to you? Or um, atleast tell you the highlights?”
Was that weird to say? Probably, Yuri was definitely wincing a little at himself, but he had been raised by innkeepers, he was used to offering things like that and didn’t really question pulling up a chair and taking a look at the menu, adjusting his glasses
“Um, do you have any favorites? It seems like they have alot of variety,”

   * MATT STARTED laughing, a soft chuckle under his breath. “You know, that sounds like a wonderful idea. You read the menu out to me and we’ll order whatever sounds good and test it out between us.” Matt smiled easily at the man. “Does that sound good to you? I’ve heard that it’s important to test everything - see if this place is better than the other diner.” At mention of what he liked, Matt hummed. “Most of my diet is coffee, actually. I like meat?”

Image

“Sure, I like that idea,” Yuri agreed with an easy nod, it had been so long since he’d shared a meal with anyone anyway, it would be a nice change of pace to do so, even if they didn’t really know eachother

“I kind of hope it is,” he nodded, starting to skim the menu

“The other was pretty good, I’d hate to go a peg down,”

Adjusting his glasses, he nodded, glancing back up at him

“I understand that, I have to get up really early in the mornings so I drink alot of coffee too, they seem to have a pretty fair amount of burgers and sandwiches, but did you want to start with an appetizer or something or did you want to jump straight into the main dishes?”

God, this guy really wasn’t going to let it go, was he? Yuri wasn’t sure if he could blame or not, Kaz was right- Yuri didn’t know anything about him, maybe his anger was justified, even though it was coming out at the wrong person, or maybe not, Yuri didn’t really care anymore, he was developing something of an immunity to being screamed at
It kind of reminded him of…..
“Japan is one of the world’s most polite countries, children are taught from the time that we can speak to be well-mannered and respectfull, Shintoism is our dominating religion, and it teaches to always put the needs of others before ourselves, even our gangsters are like this, Yakuza do nefarious things, but when there’s been a disaster of some kind, they’re the first ones to offer community support, sometimes even before public officials, but… I don’t think I’d call any of that ‘kindness’…. Japanese people have a bad reputation for being cold-hearted, we have one of the largest suicide rates in the world and there’s so much pressure to overacheive and be productive that we had to invent a word for ‘death by overworking’- karoshi, alot of people still see that as a good way to die,”
Shifting into a more comfortable position, Yuri shrugged, unsure if anything he said was even making an impact
“I don’t think I’m being kind by helping you, but I’m acting on how I was raised and the culture I come from, western culture seems to be very self-minded and everything that involves helping others is seen as being nice, rather than social obligation, so… maybe because of your culture and how you were raised, you think of this as being kind and mushy, but that’s not how I see it, I don’t think we’ll ever see things the same way,”

In some ways, the criminals he’d grown up with were the opposite of what the young man described. There were rude, flippant, and definitely not well-mannered. A conversation came to his mind, then, one that he felt sure he’d had - it felt as if it was a core memory, in fact. One that defined a part of himself, one of the few parts of himself he liked.

Inej, sitting on a windowsill, facing weak sunlight, far brighter than the sun shone. The crows, feeding from her hands, and buildings in the distance. Sunlight on her face showing the slight bend to her nose, the inky blackness of her lashes against bronze skin. “You shouldn’t make friends with crows.” He’d said.

“Why not?”

He’d had an answer - definitely had one. Something intelligent, something that was not a joke but was, in fact, a good reason not to feed the crows and cause them to congregate at his windowsill. But, upon being faced with her - the sunlight glowing around her dark hair, looking up at him with those damn eyes that turned him to stone as if a man in a myth, he couldn’t find a proper response. “They don’t have any manners.”

“Neither do you, Kaz.”

No - he hadn’t grown up with manners, at all. His da had taught them to him, and they were hard-won to forget, but the people he’d grown up beside had even less. They weren’t polite in the slightest. He tried to be, at times, to appear polite to get on people’s good side. Haskell liked to be called Sir, the people who invested in the club liked when he shook their hand and looked them in the eye during a conversation. He could turn it on and off with ease, but it made him stand out, rather than blend in.

Kindness was an illusion. No one was truly kind. People did things for their own self-interest, even if it was a tradition of being polite, it was because of social standings and to look good. Even as he thought it, though, the voice of a child tried to fight that. Tried to show people being kind. But it hurt. It hurt so badly to imagine anyone trying to help. The last time they had, it hadn’t gone well for him.

Image

Pulling in a shaky breath, Kaz looked away. “You make a move that looks even a little like a threat, and I’ll slit your throat.” He said, swallowing as he moved to stitch the wound closed. “If you could get more gauze - please.” The word felt like tearing out his own tongue.

Image

Hm, maybe Yuri was wrong, maybe they could see eye to eye on something after all

Maybe

“Ok,” he said simply, completely unbothered by the threat as he finished the stitch, snipping away the extra thread and setting his tools neatly aside before standing up

    * “YEAH, I didn’t think you offered the menu in braille. That’s alright, thanks.” Matt sighed, wondering if this was his divine punishment for 1) not eating sooner and 2) thinking he might order something other than the usual coffee and bagel. Around him, the smell of various foods swirled in the air; he could pick out meat (beef?), and grains (dinner rolls, for sure) and wafting past him now was mashed potatoes. His stomach rumbled and the feeling compelled him to reach out, tapping the next person to walk by. “I know this is weird but, what do you normally order here? I’m trying to decide what I want and uh…” he trails off, smiling with a joke that remains funny only in his head. “…the menu’s a little hard to see.”
