🧡Foraging as a Pagan Practice🧡

welcome to the start of citrus season! today i foraged some kumquats and made a syrup with the perfect consistency for an ice cream topper (cooked to about 220°F).

As well as environmental, health, and ethical reasons- foraging is a great spiritual practice. This is my guide on how i forage specifically through a pagan lens.

First I ask the plant i intend to harvest from for permission. I explain what it will be used for, promise not to take more than i'll eat, and thank it for providing for me. If at any point i feel myself fighting with the plant i move and harvest from a different spot.

In the Scottish magical tradition plants used in spellwork shouldn't be cut by iron. Iron is said to banish all spirits, so if you want the spirit of the plant present in your magic- iron would cast it away. I like to follow this tradition and only use tools made of other metals to harvest.

Once i'm home i wash what i've collected very thoroughly. Usually i already have an idea what i plan on making with them, and get started. For this kumquat syrup the prep was very tedious. I had to carefully remove every single seed one by one, chop the fruit to my liking, and get up every 10 minutes for about an hour to stir and check it's temperature. During the process i say blessings and think about what the plant represents to me. Citrus are always very bright, positive, and healing for me.

It wasn't until extremely recently that this level of work and preparation wasn't the norm for food. Foraging gives you a connection to the past, the land, the peoples of that land, nature spirits, and so much more. Especially if you are interested in kitchen witchcraft please try foraging!

Helpful Tips:

  • if im out in a city and see a plant id like to forage, i try to walk into the nearest coffee shop and ask for an empty paper cup or two that i then use as storage containers! they almost always say yes and its free.
  • if you aren't sure that a plant is edible or the specific one you're looking for, take a few detailed pictures of it. go home and google to positively identify it, then come back later! this is more helpful for plants you see often maybe on your college campus or at work.
  • cant find a recipe for a plant you harvested? think of a similar commercial ingredient and find recipes for that instead.
