For the first time since the 1948 Nakba, there was no Christmas tree lighting outside the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Palestine.

In its place, an installation depicting the nativity scene is placed as if it were taking place in Gaza today. This is done in support of the people of Gaza who have been facing a harrowing Israeli aggression for the past 80 days, an aggression so catastrophic that it lead to cancelling Christmas celebrations in Bethlehem this year.

With the nativity models placed amid rubble and barbed wire, the star of Bethlehem is represented by the aftermath of a bomb hitting their shelter. The scene replicates those following Israeli shelling of civilian homes in Gaza.

Does anyone want a cute Palestine fact? In 1929, there were several proposals for the flag of Palestine from different newspapers and individuals in Palestine. One of these proposals was in a letter from Munir Dakak, who suggested a flag with an orange on it.

Oranges were exported out of Palestine in the mid-19th century and are commonly associated with the port city of Yafa (Jaffa). They remain a symbol of Palestinian art and literature; Ghassan Kanafani even wrote a short story about Al Nakba called ‘the land of sad oranges’.

Just like the watermelon and olives, oranges are also symbolic of Palestinian resistance and our ties to the land.

If the proposal had been accepted, the flag of Palestine could’ve looked a bit like this:

Above is the link to an audio file with Palestinian music, read-aloud poetry, storytelling, and excerpts from speeches on history and liberation. It was gathered by Radio Al Hara, an internet radio station broadcast from Ramallah, Bethlehem, and Amman in Jordan, founded during the pandemic as a way to connect during isolation. “Al Hara” means ​“the neighbourhood” in Arabic. From the river to the sea! 🇵🇸
