i loved you so much and i couldn’t save you. do you know what that’s like, when your hands aren’t stable enough to hold something so important. to watch your own reflection drop everything precious in this world into the fire. do you know what it’s like to burn alongside, whispering, please, i tried, i swear to god that i tried

❝ Well, it's no Mona Lisa. . . Or Starry Night. . . Actually, it's nothing. Your art is terrible. Pound the clay again and redo it, yeah. You're not going to surpass anyone if you can't even make something as simple as a bird. ❞

The King’s tail flicked in irritation at the blatant lack of respect toward his creation. No, it was nothing like the bird he’d been tasked to create by the artist, but first attempts often ended with less than satisfactory results. Meruem himself had lost to chess and checkers champions at the beginning, but they had been overcome quickly and with a force they could not withstand.

     This would be no different.

Art may have been the furthest he could travel from the games he had occupied himself with previously, but it was a challenge nonetheless. The clay that had been haphazardly shaped into a vaguely bird-like silhouette was taken and crushed within his palm, then pressed onto the surface and once more rounded into a ball.

               ❝ This time. ❞

Every muscle, every nerve– it sat within the ants form, bunched up and tense. The lingering expectation to meet an early demise still stood beside him, looming over with an expectant stare that helped send chills down the chimera’s spine. Cold and piercing, but fears grip was too strong to even allow him to shake from it.
Here he knelt, turned to stone by the King’s gaze.
What finally gifted life back within the winged ants being was the next question to leave Meruem’s mouth. the given permission to stand almost went without notice as Colt brought all his attention on what was asked of him… and the very fact the King seemed to relax upon it’s delivery. He was still allowed to stand before him; still allowed to live.
… it’s– A gulp; swallowing hard to push the lump from his throat.

  My name is Colt.
Upon his given answer the ant began to move. A slow, gradual process of pushing up from his spot and allowing his legs to stretch; to stand tall once more. Something about this–about simply standing before Meruem like he was, now, felt wrong. If need be he’d drop back down without question.

                ❝ Colt... ❞

Meruem repeated the name quietly, but still audibly as he committed it to memory. He truly expected nothing from the soldier in terms of loyalty or respect -- the King had learned that during his time with Komugi he had not earned anything his Guard nor his Chimeran subjects had given him -- but keeping the name in the archives of his thoughts would not harm either of them.

It was more than likely they would cross paths again after this, after all.

❝ Your anxieties about being here are unnecessary.                I am not the same as when we first met -- no harm                will come to you now. ❞

No doubt his choice of words would arouse suspicion in the avian insect. Meruem at the time of his birth was beyond words in comparison to himself now; life meant nothing, and only the powerful were allowed to survive.

He supposed he should thank Komugi for his change of mind (and he does at every opportunity; she was the only reason he, himself, had found the strength to continue on) -- and perhaps Colt should even more so. Much would be different had it not been for that woman.

❝ And you may leave if you wish; nothing is keeping                you here. ❞

so is it tough being the leader of so many ants?

❝ No. If they fail to concede to my rule,               they lose their life. What remains is a group               of Chimera Ants both loyal and aware of               my power. They are far too fearful to attempt               anything... unsavory. ❞

As far as Gon can tell, there’s no hostility in the ant before him, and he was always one to trust his instincts. Regardless of how overwhelmingly powerful Meruem is, regardless that Gon has no way to protect himself, he feels absolutely no fear staring into the eyes of a king. He doesn’t move from his position as Meruem steps forward, but rather, tilts his head to the side. His shoulders drop as he leaves the defensive stance, and offers his hand.. “Gon Freecs. Can I ask you a question?”

Something continued to nag at the back of the King’d mind, a sensation that could not be named specifically, but one that still caused his gaze to narrow at the boy before him. This boy stood vulnerable before a being that very well could have killed him just as easily as snapping a leaf from a vine, and yet Gon continued to exist as if there would be no harm in his future. Why..? When there appeared to be not a single drop of controlled Nen in his body?

Pitou would not allow themselves to be killed by such a basic human, not in a thousand lifetimes of service.

❝ ... Very well. -- But only if I may ask you one in                return, Gon. ❞

You look great and all, but do you know what really looks good on you? Me. uwu

Ah. There they were. That book no longer mattered, and it was set aside atop the pile.

A brow raises as Meruem snaps the novel in his hand shut. This certainly sounded like something someone would say...
