Tbh? I don't like Paul. I don't want Paul. I understand that Paul serves an important narrative function and that Paul is the best possible ending for Camilla and Palamedes given their situation, personalities, and relationship. However what I really want is for Camilla and Palamedes to attend the ATN wedding as two individual humans and for Pal to be a lightweight who loses his tie in the garden fountain after three drinks and for Camilla to do exactly one shot with the group, keep Gideon from ripping the sleeves off her dress shirt, and absolutely kill it at lawn games during cocktail hour. Since this scenario is a wild tonal mismatch for the series and also Palamedes was already dead, this was unlikely to ever happen. However Paul is the final nail in the coffin for the theoretical existence of this scene and I can't help but resent them for that

ok actually i'm putting this back in my queue with my original tags:

#I don't think we as readers are supposed to welcome Paul. at least not without grieving Pal and Cam #Paul's existence is both a horror and a triumph #however my concerns are much more petty and involve Camilla winning at cornhole #I can't yet properly characterize Paul. would Paul lose their tie in the fountain??? would Paul win at cornhole?? #or does everything that made Pal and Cam individually delightful cancel out into a person who is mostly competent and boring. #they balanced each other out you see!!! so what happens now that they're combined into one person!!!! #the locked tomb #nonasbirthday #nona the ninth spoilers #the locked tomb spoilers

Fully agree that Paul is written as and meant to be read as a tragedy. I don't think it's a coincidence that the main opinions we get on what Pal and Cam were up to were from Pyrrha, who was already grieving them even before they did the deed because she saw the writing on the wall. It's meant to be another side of the coin of lyctorhood, the way they were both so sure was the correct lyctorhood, that is still as horrifying and sad in its own way.

That said I am also very confident in Tamsyn's ability to make any character she devotes time into interesting, so I don't think Paul will be simply boringly competent and flat. They will be a new and exciting brand of messed up and I can't wait to find out the flavor.

I feel like porn RPGs where there's an explicit in-character reason why making your NPCs fuck gives them bonuses in combat are being more honest about their game-mechanical premise than mainstream RPGs where making your NPCs fuck just happens to be a required step in a side quest which results in them receiving combat bonuses for ostensibly unrelated reasons.

#is this subtweeting fire emblem? #bc I feel this is subtweeting fire emblem

And Mass Effect, and BG3, etc...

Mainstream game devs aren't about to let their NPCs be DTF just from the get go. A major allied character? Like some kind of slut? So the fucking is part of a relationship quest, in which the NPC gets character development. But then we can't let such a quest end without a mechanical reward, so there's combat bonuses for the NPC.

I wonder if there's any games where the reward for the Quest To Fuck is alternate outfits.

Game where the reward for having sex is unlocking the other character's outfit for the main character and vice versa.

I'm gonna link to the animations in case y'all either don't remember or have never heard of some of these.

A quick note: these were made in the 2000s. Comedy is subjective, there's some strong examples of dark and/or "lolz teh random" humor in these. Maybe some cultural blindness, too. That said, enjoy a time capsule of stuff made before/during the birth of Youtube, now hosted on Youtube.

DNI if you have lain for aeons, deathless and half-sleeping, watching the stars churn and roil overhead as their short lives flicker against the canvas of night, or if you watch st*ven un*verse

That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even DNI

Zukka is a ship that I'm ultimately indifferent to but its existence gives me more glee than any other ship. As someone who obnoxiously spent the majority of my pre-teen years going to forum war for Kataang against Zutara, and watching as that war went on strong for years after I'd left my station, the rise of Zukka basically felt like this

"After ten long years the fight shows no sign of stopping. Kataang is once again bringing its ultimate attack of canon-compliance, while Zutara has released another essay on how it better suits the show's themes of balance- wait. What's this? Why it's-it's- IT'S ZUKKA WITH A STEEL CHAIR!!!!"

Genuinely 90% of historical fiction would be so much better if more writers could get more comfortable with the fact that to create a good story set in a different time period you do actually have to give the characters beliefs & values which reflect that time period

As a f/f I try to sit out of these talks bc the last thing i want is more awkwardly written f/f made solely out of guilt, but yeah I take issue with the rhetoric of "oh femsalsh fandom is sex negative and never has dead dove unlike m/m or m/f"

Like yes while f/f has its annoying anti groups, did we forget that most antis came from big m/f and m/m ship wars like the stars wars sequel trilogy and voltron? Drama and sex negativity is not something unique to femslash spaces.

Granted bc of the difference in scale I agree it can be harder to find those dead dove niches. Won't fault ppl for pointing out the obvious. But it is why I try and cherish the dead dove femslash writers I find bc they usually lack the safety of a major shipping fandom like the Reylos or Sheith's to help shield some potential backlash

If you don't mind my sharing my own, probably less spicy POC rep in audio drama take: the AD community's tendency toward celebration of "representation" within the medium as if this rep applies to anything substancially besides queer characters is exausting. Sure, queer rep is important but so often reading "there's rep for everything!" and the cast is like, 95% white? Or, bafflingly, people claiming diversity for something that is entirely fanon? Mmh.

Hi anon!

My take is just about as spicy, honestly.

There's a tendency to value "racially ambiguous" characters played entirely by White actors over actual BIPOC characters

(usually with BIPOC actors, though I'm not as strict about this since I don't mind White actors playing BIPOC characters so long as BIPOC voice actors can play White characters and no BIPOC actors lose voice acting opportunities. And as long as more attention is given to BIPOC creators than we're getting currently).

It sometimes feels as though BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People Of Colour) characters and creators are overlooked in favour of characters who are ostensibly White but drawn by fandom as BIPOC.

I've seen a lot of support in the community from fellow audio drama people; I've felt uplifted by my fellow creators who are White, and I always appreciate and value that. And obviously some shows are just well made and part of their success is based on other factors.

But as someone who's also aware of audio drama fandom, it's easy to see how much favour is given to White Characters drawn as BIPOC in comparison to characters who are BIPOC in text, and I'm not sure why.

That's my spicy opinion. I follow a few BIPOC creators but I can only name two that have an amount of success comparable to White audio drama creators (Gabriel Urbina of W359 fame and Octavia Bray of Atypical Artists), but my knowledge is limited.

And that's not even getting into female led audio drama, but I do love the success of creators such as Lauren Shippen in the space.

I'm not here to yuck anyone's yum or blame anyone for this phenomenon, but I do think it's worth thinking about. Why I see 50 brown Jonny Simses for every canonically brown Samama Khalid. Maybe it's all a coincidence based on other factors. Maybe White characters invite more imagination in their depiction or something.

I don't mind BIPOC depictions of ostensibly White or "racially ambiguous" characters, but I'm not a big fan of if they outnumber depictions of canon BIPOC characters. I just think the latter deserve more love.

I'm no expert. Also I'm mostly in the horror space, apart from my love of Life With Leoh (a sci fi romcom). My knowledge is very limited so if anyone would like to contradict me, I welcome it (especially if it means discovering more BIPOC led shows).

I don't want this to just be about complaining, so please feel free to shout out some fantastic BIPOC led audio drama (either created by or with a majority BIPOC cast) or even share some art you've done of characters from them and I'll happily share them.

My favorites are Wolf 359 (by Gabriel Urbina) and Life with Leoh (by Octavia Bray)!

Here's a few personal favourites:

  • Absolutely No Adventures: (Fantasy) Sig is an excellent baker, but unfortunately he's also the child of basically every prophecy. He's willing to help out, but he will be going on absolutely no adventures.
  • Desperado: (Urban Fantasy, Adventure, Supernatural, Horror Elements) Three young people under the patronage of death gods meet and set off on the same path for different reasons: for safety, for revenge, and to kill The Old Man In The Sky.
  • Hi Nay: (Supernatural Horror) Hi Nay follows Mari, a recent Toronto immigrant who's babaylan (shaman) family background draws her into helping people with various horrific supernatural problems around the city. Formatted as phone calls to her mother telling her what's happened.
  • InCo: (Sci-Fi) InCo follows a (seemingly cool, actually very stressed) interstellar information trader and her peppy AI as they find a strange boy floating in space, and become wrapped up in mystery and political intrigue.
  • Janus Descending: (Horror, Sci-Fi, Tragedy) A xenopalentologist and a xenoarcheologist investigate the abandoned ruins of an ancient alien civilisation and find more than they bargained for. Listen to the supercut for this one. Really clever use of a strange format: you hear her recordings first to last, and his last to first, and it's all the more heartbreaking for it.
  • Stories From Ylelmore: (Slice of Life, Urban Fantasy) Three kids: a witch, a werewolf, and a curse-bearer, solve some mysteries and go on everyday adventures.

The Bookmarks - Even though Mark eats off silver spoons and Marquelle is more used to plastic, the two are best friends. This improvised comedy series explores the bond of two friends who start a book podcast on their way to their shared goal of writing TheNextGreatAmericanNovel(TM).

Small Victories - A recently recovered drug addict tries to start her new lease on life, too bad life has it out for her.  This dramatic comedy follows Marisol through the ups and downs of her life.

Vega - In a fantasy futuristic world, Vega Rex is employed by her government to kill off the world's worst criminals. She's never met a criminal she couldn't catch…until now. Join Vega as she journeys through a world of bumbling apprentices, powerful technogods, and her biggest challenge yet. Hosted by Ivuoma Hall.

Temujin - A Webby-nominated audio drama on the rise of Genghis Khan—and the fall of his closest friend.

Caravan - (I think) a weird–west audio adventure about going through hell with the people you love

Unwell - Lillian Harper moves to the small town of Mt. Absalom, Ohio, to care for her estranged mother Dorothy after an injury. Living in the town's boarding house which has been run by her family for generations, she discovers conspiracies, ghosts, and a new family in the house's strange assortment of residents.

I'm not entirely sure because the parameters for whiteness have shifted (gotten less stringent in order to keep the majority) since I was a kid (idk what's going on with latino/hispanic like... official classifications right now?? Now there are like 2 boxes?? I'm not sure how the writer self id's either).

Kalila Stormfire's Economical Magic Services - After a controversial fallout with her coven, Kalila Stormfire must juggle complex clients and an anonymous critic hellbent on besmirching her new business. The decaying urban block where Kal operates appreciates her affordable experience in a broad range of supernatural ailments and remedies. Still, Kal is not sure if her talent is enough to stop whoever has been posting bad reviews and persuading customers to cancel appointments.

The Ortiz Twins are coming home - After a face-to-face with an ancient pitáo (an ancient god) who has forgotten his name, the twins are sent on an adventure through the Underworld and face restless spirits, as well as their long lost parents. A new fantasy audio drama about twins on the border reconnecting with their indigenous roots and their family’s forgotten history.

monarchy has no real purpose and should be abolished irl but im a slut for royal families in fiction. the politics. the intrigue. families divided by the eyes of a nation. the pressure of children told from birth that they are born to rule, born for only one purpose. the stifling of empathy and real bonds and love. the loneliness when all eyes are on you. it’s so inherently tragic and yet everyone involved is terrible because that’s all they can be. gimme.

Other town building achievements in this week's Flood Campaign involve building a school! Which goes very slowly both because the town is actively losing money from all the trade disruption and because the town's children are actively sabotaging it so that they don't get stuck in classrooms all day.

In the meantime Cillian, our paladin, and Corric, our definitely-a-wizard-and-not-a-warlock, moonlight as teachers in the half-finished space. Cillian gathers the younger kids for storytelling that is very entertaining and engaging and has absolutely no educational value whatsoever! Corric meanwhile has acquired preschool materials about making friends and conflict resolution and is learning a lot! But unfortunately is also trying to teach these things to 6th graders.

The entire thing eventually devolves into a very large game of tag, which Corric is determined to win.

Meanwhile Korel the sahuagin completely normal sea elf sorcerer is giving the halfling militia completely normal and reasonable lectures on how normal, non-LE-shark-people military discipline is definitely supposed to work.

Sedge, the fighter/druid who actively hates the fact that she's a druid multiclass, has declared Korel her blood-brother and the only person who understands her. Every day, she agrees more wholeheartedly with his carefully unspoken opinion that sometimes the only solution to a bad soldier is to simply eat them.
