So. New York Comic-Con.

I have to say, watching a fully garbed Gandolf dancing alongside a live-action creature on a large screen in a dazzlingly designed booth wasn’t exactly what I’d consider a typical Saturday morning for me. Add in hundreds of Batmans, Pokemans, and a few well-done Princess Leias and I’m a bit out of my element. NYCC is certainly a sight to behold, especially when jeans and a t-shirt is as dressed up as I get even on Halloween. And yet, watching Gugor interact with kids and passersby in The Creature Department booth this weekend was pretty incredible. I’ve been working on The Creature Department book with Robert Paul Weston and Framestore from conception and seeing a character from that book literally come alive and talk to readers is a whole other level of engagement. Gugor joked about his hair and his love of dumplings—encouraging the costumed creatures at the Javits Center to find out more in his upcoming book for middle schoolers of all ages. I was thrilled to be a part of this event and would certainly vote this the best people-watching of the year.
