Text reads: “If you are going through a hard time, please know that there are people who love and support you. You may not have met them yet but they are out there and you will be glad to meet them when you do.”

The 519 is starting a new project for community support! We are asking that people can send in supportive and affirming messages for folks in the community who might be experiencing isolation or are in need of a reminder that they are loved.

Words have a lot of power and these ones are reminders of the resiliency of LGBTQ folks. They are from the queer community, for the queer community.

Messages can be for the community, to your past self, something that you need to hear now, or something that you want to say to someone else. Messages can be as long or short as you’d like. They will be posted on The 519’s tumblr account and may be sent out through twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. All messages will be kept anonymous.

Text reads: “Your identities are valid and you know them better than anyone else ever will. You can take some time to figure them out and if they change again that’s completely fine. It’s never too late to explore your identities and who you are as a person.”

Text reads: “1. When you feel free to be you is when you know you have found a community that loves and respects you for you. 2. Never wonder about a situation or a person when you can just ask. Sometimes I just want to be. Saying hello isn’t asking a lot of anyone. Greet somebody and make their day!”

The 519 is starting a new online project! The Queer Community Journal will be an online space where supportive messages from the community will be posted for LGBTQ people who are in need of some support.

Submit messages about resiliency, affirmation, love, and solidarity and we will post them online for folks in the community to read! Messages can be for the community, to your past self, something that you need to hear now, or something that you want to say to someone else.

Words and stories have power. Send in yours as a way of offering support to the community.

Text reads: “You don’t owe a disclosure of your identity to anyone. You are who you are with or without external validation. If it’s not safe for you to be out, you don’t have to be out. If you don’t want to be out, you don’t have to be out. Not being out doesn’t mean that you are not queer. You are yourself, with or without the validation of others, and that’s the best thing you can be.”

Trans+Sport is a documentary short that highlights many of the barriers trans and genderqueer youth face in accessing sport and physical activity.

Through interviews with youth and adult leaders, viewers will gain a better understanding of why it is important to challenge these barriers, how individuals can create change, and the impact creating safer spaces will have for everyone in your community. This video was created by The 519, with support from The Toronto Community Foundation.

The 519 Education Team Supporting 10,000+ People in 2016 to Create Authentic Spaces

We would like to thank the 10,000+ people who participated in our education and training sessions in 2016. Last year, hundreds of non-profit, public sector and corporate organizations worked with us to advance LGBTQ inclusive spaces where people can be their authentic selves.

The 519 Education and Training team provides organizations with the insight, tools and understanding to create environments that are LGBTQ-inclusive, respectful and welcoming. Our education team advances efforts that promote diversity and inclusion and creates inclusive environments for everyone. We have an amazing team of trainers who bring an incredible breadth of experience, passion and courage to their work.

We support the diversity and inclusion efforts of a wide range of organizations in Toronto, across Ontario and beyond; from retailers and banks; to hospitals and care environments; to shelters and housing organizations; to municipal, provincial and federal government departments and ministries. We share our advocacy work and resources, including our Creating Authentic Spaces / Créer des Milieux Authentiques toolkit and LGBTQ2S Youth Homelessness campaign with partners from across Canada and internationally.

Every day our education team works to ensure LGBTQ people of all ages feel safe to access services and community supports, where queer and trans families are free to define themselves, and where LGBTQ2S young people do not become homeless and have to experience poverty, despair and fear. We work to advance human rights and to ensure legislation is enacted in a way that creates real safety and inclusion for queer and trans people and where no one experiences isolation, violence or discrimination because of who they are.

We are inspired by the conversations that are taking place in the training room and by the growing number of people who are committed to creating spaces that are inclusive of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions.

We encounter so much joy and happiness at The 519 throughout the year. We are a space for change, where many different kinds of events and gatherings take place on a daily basis.

Our Family Resource Centre is filled each week with the inspiring energy, laughter and creativity of children. Our programs celebrate throughout the year with movie nights, craft parties, fashion shows, and karaoke.

The hallways quietly echo with music when Counterpoint Community Orchestra and Singing Out meet for practice and rehearsals. The floorboards spring to life with dance and movement from community groups Rainbow Ballroom Toronto, Triangle Squares, Swingin'OUT and ILL NANA/DiverseCity Dance Company.

There are colourful birthday parties, pubs, Bar and Bat Mitvahs, weddings, volunteer fairs, craft fairs, film screenings, retirement parties and staff get-togethers throughout the year under the sparkle of the chandeliers in our Grand Ballroom.

We learned to create and make so many crafty things with you this year - crochet, sewing, silk screening, button making, animation, and quilting - and we look forward to even more engaging craft opportunities in the months ahead.

Thank you for your smiles and your support, and the many ways you inspire us and each other.

From all of us at The 519, our best wishes for a happy, healthy and hopeful New Year.
