Amazing how just ONE episode of a show can ruin the whole thing forever, and even the great early episodes aren’t fun to watch afterwards. It really feels like losing something.

And the thing is, I’m talking about The Magicians and Quentin’s death, which caused me to lose a show I love. But if I hadn’t specified..is this post about Game of Thrones? Supernatural? The Magicians? The 100?

So many good shows have been blowing it in an instant, in just the past few years, that this post could apply to and it’s pretty dismal.

While being furious about the US government offering $600 stimulus, I’d like to remind people that currently SSI gives people about $800 a month to survive on and has a mountain of red tape around it, including demanding that the disabled go in for re-evaluation every few years even when their conditions are incurable or degenerative.

Nobody should have to live with a government dangling pitiful offerings before you demanding that you beg and congratulate them for their “generosity”

If anybody has any beautiful Shakespeare quotes they can tie to the election, please feel free to share them

This is such an intense, emotional climactic moment, and if anyone could describe it it would be Shakespeare!

But I am way too wired and terrified to think of anything tonight, so...feel free to come up with one if you have it!

To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow, creeps in this petty pace from day to day, to the last syllable of recorded time; And all our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death.

(Macbeth)

But also, regarding Trump:

The Lady doth protest too much, methinks.

what if public libraries were open late every night so that:

- children and teens who cant get home until a later time have a safe, warm, well lit, populated area to socialize, charge devices, rest, etc

- children and teens have a safe place to go to stay away from danger

- people who have jobs that take up most of the day would still have time ANY DAY OF THE WEEK to go use the libraries facilities (printing, computers, etc)

This is exactly what public libraries are trying to achieve - public libraries as a third place is a whole thing - it’s just that the funding isn’t there (yet).

Libraries need and deserve so much funding

I’m going to apologize if this post comes off as sounding very aggressive, but having just been through one of the most stressful experiences of my entire career in libraries:

if you want this, you need to be at your local community government meetings. you need to be talking to your representatives.  you need to be out there Lobbying.

Just a few weeks ago, my library, me, my coworkers, we had to write letters, send emails, make phone calls, speak at council meetings, just to beg our aldermen to give us our usual funding. Which they didn’t even give to us last year.  Losing last year’s funding forced us to cut staff, hours, and all of our databases.  If we’d lost this year’s funding? two positions would have been gone and we would have likely had to close on Saturdays.  On Saturdays.  The day of the week most of y’all working M-F jobs actually have time to go to the fucking library.

And do you want to know how much money we were asking? We were asking for an increase of approximately 13 cents a person.

13.

Fucking.

Cents.

ACROSS AN ENTIRE YEAR.

No one seems to understand how libraries are funded.  It’s not just Free Stuff.  It’s your tax dollars being paid back into your community.  It’s crowdfunding.  The highest cost anyone in my community pays for the library a year is approximately $250.  Divide that up.  That’s just $4 a week.  That’s less than a coffee.  It’s the equivalent of purchasing about 10 hardcover books a year.  For that price, you could have access to every book that has ever been written, a place to go that’s not a bar, programs for kids, teens, and adults, educated staff that can help you find the answers to your questions, and so much more.

You want these late-night libraries?  You want all this stuff?  Start fighting for it.  Start showing up.  Start making phone calls.  It’s not going to come out of thin air.  Start fighting to erase the idea that taxes = evil.  Start fighting to spread the understanding that taxes are what help us build a better society.

Make sure the people who represent you know that you want this.  That this is where you want your tax dollars to go.  That this is what you want them to support.  That you are willing to see your tax bill go up a few more dollars for this.

Because otherwise?  None of this is going to happen.  Libraries are going to keep cutting their opening hours.  Keep cutting staff.  Keep cutting programs and databases and collections.

We NEED your support, and we need more than just a post on Tumblr.  We need to see people show up and speak out.

I admire Cassius Stans because they stanned him ever since he was an unsufferable spoiled brat and they waited from Iron Gold to the end of Dark Age, constantly on edge about his fate.

That is dedication right there!

I was so irritated with myself for having loving Cassius in the first trilogy when he so clearly didn’t deserve it.

I must admit, validation is a good feeling!

(Fortunately I’ve read all 5 books during quarantine, so I didn’t have to wait for his fate.)

you know another reason i hate the magicians writers? because they don’t know their own characters. they do not know these people well enough to understand what SHOULD have happened.

when i first started watching the show, my initial impression of the first few episodes was that the plot was fun but flimsy, and yet i was invested right from the start because of the CHARACTERS. i loved the characters more than i loved the show itself right from day one.

and then they (john and sera, any of the writers really) forgot their own characters. somewhere along the line, they chose their self-indulgent angsty plotlines over their well-developed and lovable characters. and that’s where they went wrong—among all the other places they went wrong, of course.

i’m convinced someone on that team had some sort of resentment for their characters and just decided to fuck them all over in the most unsubtle subtly cruel way possible. WE, as fans, know their own characters better than they do. season 5 got them fucked over because they tried to write new, worse characters out of the characters they already had.

they failed to recognize their biggest draw was not their storyline, it was not ✨fillory✨ or “hey look we can do magic schools too” or gods or card tricks or cool costumes. their draw was their characters. their draw was shy, bisexual, introverted, awkward leading man quentin coldwater. it was fabulous, intelligent, trauma-riddled eliot waugh; it was badass, scared-to-be-vulnerable, high king of fillory margo hansen.

the appeal of the magicians was the magicians. and that’s what the writers forgot.

Yes.

If you haven’t read the books, people, go read the books. They’re so much better. It’s not even a tight race - it was, at the show’s peak, but now it’s not. They’re so much better.
