My cartoon for this week’s Guardian Books.
I graduated high school in 99.
There was a student at our school named Wayne.
Wayne was gay. It was obvious. He was unable to stay in the closet even if he wanted to. To make matters worse, he was also Black. From a bullying standpoint, that was not a great combo. Both Black and white students made fun of him relentlessly. He was ostracized from the only community that may have given him protection. Only us theater kids stuck up for him, but not to significant effect.
Wayne was bullied so much that at one point he finally snapped and attacked his bullies with a lunch tray. I was actually seated in perfect line of sight and just sat there chewing my soggy fries in stunned silence. It didn't even seem real as I was witnessing it. The image of him wailing on his main bully as the food on his tray flew off is permanently logged into my long term memory.
The bully he attacked had blood all over his face and went straight to the nurse. Other than superficial cuts, he was not injured.
Before the attack, Wayne went to teachers for help. He went to guidance counselors for help. He went to the principals for help.
He did all of the things you were supposed to do. No one helped him. They wagged a finger at the bullies and warned them to stop.
Wayne's lunch tray melee was the only thing that worked. His bullies stayed far away from him. But a week later Wayne was expelled and the bullies were given no punishment.
So... no.
No one in my school talked about being trans.
Because the only way to survive being openly queer was to bash people with a lunch tray.
Well, I'm sold.
I keep watching all of these things that are supposed to turn me gay and so far the only tingle was when Captain America bicep-curled a helicopter.
I'll keep trying I guess.
I think one of the most frustrating things about modern conservatives is when they hate something for the wrong reason. And then you have to defend something you also hate.
"I hate Disney!" "Yes, their view on labor has been..." "Because of their woke garbage movies!" "Oh."
"I am sick of these Disney remakes!" "Yeah, it would be nice if they focused on creating original IPs instead of copy/paste remakes of animated classics." "They cast a black mermaid!" "Oh."
"Facebook is evil!" "Yeah, selling user data without consent was..." "They deleted my post about whites being replaced!" "Oh."
We live in a dystopia....
If the background actors don't come in for work because they exist virtually then the background costume and background hair and make up and their catering and transport and all the other departments that look after them get cut too. These things have knock on effects...

Just remember something: When I say "the fascists almost get to the government today" is not an hyperbole. I know it's fancy to call "nazi" or "fascist" to any right winger all around the world. But this is spain. The literal fascist party was in charge of the country until the 70s. The person who was president when I was born had been a literal card-carrying fascist just two years before. There's A LOT of people who either had been part or is still part of the literal fascist party, the one who changed the timezone of Spain to be the same than Adolf Hitler's Germany just because they were fangirling too much.
When Vox, the fascist party, won 52 seats in congress in 2019, they literally tweeted "hoy hemos pasado" ("today we have passed", in contrast with the antifascist "no pasaran"/ "they shall not pass"). The leader of the party said, in a televised candidate debate, he was proud of his grandfather fighting for the fascist side in the spanish civil war. Their embrace of the fascist heritage and symbols is not even subtle. They are the fascists, the same ones that kickstarted the spanish civil war. the same ones that ordered my great-grandpa to be executed by a firing squad for being an union guy. The same ones that came into my grandparents house by night when my mother was a child and took my maternal grandpa away for almost a week because my town priest snitched him as a commie.
This is not hyperbole. These are the fascists.
And today we have kicked their fucking asses.
