key moments in your relationship with keiji.
A layoff, and his rent had to be paid earlier than usual? He didn’t want to deal with it. Not tonight, at least. “Just my luck,” he grumbled. Just when everything was supposed to fall into place.
He kicked a couple rocks as he walked; hands in his pockets, head dipped down to only stare at the wet sidewalk.
Walking through the subtle lights of the city, there was a vibrant color in a passing puddle. When he looked up, he saw a flashing sign.
Crow’s Foot
A new club? Fuck it, anywhere is better than home.
Keiji made his way down the steps, suddenly feeling engulfed in music. When the doors opened, he looked across the way and saw a live band on a small stage. The whole place was relatively small; a small bar on one side, a few round tables surrounding the stage. Despite the entire club being dimly lit, he could count the number of people inside on one hand. With a sigh, he made his way over to the bar and got a drink.
The musicians playing when he came in were making their way out, and someone walked to the microphone in the middle of the stage. Keiji kept his gaze down, messing with his nails as the announcer spoke.
“We have singers with voices from the heavens at Crow’s Foot. Enjoy.”
It wasn’t until you started singing when his head shot up.
Keiji was completely and utterly captivated by the smoothness your voice had, the expressions your face held, the pure emotion you conveyed within the lryics. It was enough to make Anyone feel something. Hell, he wasn’t even dating anyone and he still felt the heartache growing as you went on. No wonder you were a singer. You weren’t good, you were great.
Keiji didn’t realize it, but he was completely entranced. He wasn’t even blinking as he stared at you.
Before he knew it, the song ended and the audience lazily applauded. You made your way offstage after subtly bowing.
Keiji immediately checked his phone, writing down the time, date, and name of the club.
I have to see you again.
—
“I’m here!” you announced.
Your hair was a bit ruffled, and your bag slipped down to hang at your elbow. You were panting,“Keiji, I’m so sorry for getting here late,”you took a breath,“My stupid gig went really late because the next act wasn’t there like they said they’d be,” you sat down in your chair, slightly shaking the table as you took your bag off, the palms of your hands hitting the table,“And my goddamn boss made me perform until they came, and traffic was such a bitch, and—“
“Hey.”
You stopped talking. One of Keiji’s hands rested on yours; he gave you a gentle squeeze before saying,“It’s okay, okay? If anything, I was really early.” He scooted closer and leaned near your ear,“It looks like you’re running on pure adrenaline right now. Just relax, you can think about killing your boss later, yeah?”
The last comment made both of you laugh. Your hand opened to return the squeeze.
Despite his assurance, you still couldn’t help but feel terrible. You backed your head away to look him in the eyes. “I’m sorry Keiji. It’s our first nice outing in god knows how long...and I just messed it up.”
He reached to touch your cheek. “You didn’t mess it up. I promise. We still have the rest of the night, hell, the rest of our lives to have more dates like these, too. You could never make me upset.” He kissed you, stroking under your eye with his thumb. “I love you. So much.”
You placed your hand over his. “I love you too. So much.”
—
“Dance with me?”
You kept yourself facing away from him. Your hands rested on the counter, balling up into fists. “Keiji...I’m fucking tired, please just let me go to bed. My shift was especially excruciating tonight and I feel like shit.”
“Just for a little bit. Maybe it’ll make you feel better.” He paused.
Don’t say it, Keiji. Don’t...
“I miss you.”
I miss you.
Of course he’d pull that shit.
When you turned around, you saw the same glimmer of hope on his face that you had seen too many times in the past. His hand was held out for you.
You were too tired to argue. Maybe if I indulge him now, he’ll leave me alone later.
Reluctantly taking his hand, you felt yourself being pulled gently into his arms.
He held you tight, body against body. Careful hands made their way around your waist. You rested your head on the side of his chest; your face turned away to keep from looking at him. The weight of his head dipped to the space between your neck and shoulder, lips brushing against your skin as he spoke. “Every time I hear this song, I think about the first time we met.”
He didn’t say anything else.
There was an attempt to sway along with the music, but you couldn’t take it. His arms were suffocating. His voice was too loud. His breath was too hot.
It hurts too much.
You hurt too much.
The tears took over; you turned your head to hide your face in his shirt. You were sure he felt the fabric getting wet. Fingers curled into his back, almost as if they were gripping for life. Your body shook when you let out a sob.
“I can’t do it, Keiji.”
Can’t wait to see this continue!! keep it up kettle
