Hurricane Irma

This hurricane has officially hit a category 5. To give you an idea of the strength of this storm:

Harvey was a category 4.

Katrina and Andrew were a category 5 and Irma is at the moment is stronger than both of them. This hurricane is going to cause absolute destruction when it hits. Puerto Rico (especially this beautiful isla)  Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic and Florida are all in it’s path. Here’s a checklist if you can afford these supplies.

Food

  • Bottled Water- a week’s supply minimum (One gallon daily per person)
  • Non perishable items that don’t require cooking ( Tuna, nuts, fruit cups, Cereal bars, peanut butter, crackers, dried fruits, canned vegetables, chili)
  • Dry pet food
  • Packaged juices
  • Powdered or canned milk

Supplies

  • Manual can opener
  • Toilet paper
  • Baby wipes ( this will make a great alternative for showers)
  • Batteries ( AAA, AA, 6V, C, and D)
  • Flash lights (if you have manual ones even better)
  • Battery powered radio
  • Utility knife
  • Waterproof matches
  • 5 gallons of gas
  • Tampons and pads
  • Portable phone charger fully charged)
  • Sand bags (redirects water and debris flow)
  • First aid kit
  • Blankets
  • Rain gear - Ponchos, boots. (avoid umbrellas)

  • Bring any ornaments from outside inside
  • Trim trees
  • Board your windows
  • Have a secure room that you an pile everyone ( has to have no windows)

Does smoking marijuana affect how well birth control works?

Someone asked us:

Hi, does smoking marijuana affect birth control?

There’s absolutely no evidence showing that smoking weed affects birth control, including side effects and how well it prevents pregnancy. The only marijuana-related birth control problem you might have is forgetting to use your birth control correctly because you’re high. So just make sure you stay on top of your birth control, no matter what.

Hey let's remember

Reproductive Justice (RJ) isn’t just abortions. And it’s not just just about cis white women.

• RJ is folx of color not having children bc they are afraid of them being killed due to racist injustice.

• RJ is transmasculine (transmen, non-binary afab people, bois/boys, etc) folx being denied medical care because of our trans status, that is if we can even afford it.

• RJ is predominantly folx of color not being to keep their children or give them up for adoption, even if they wanted to, bc they can’t afford the medical bills that come with having a baby.

• RJ is folx who don’t speak fluent English having limited access to medical care, no matter what their decision is.

• RJ is dark-skinned folx receiving less pain meds during pregnancy or the doctor will ignore them all together bc of racist stereotypes which puts their bodies under unnecessary stress which in turn effects the fetus.

• RJ is transmasculine folx being misgendered by hospital staff.

• RJ is transmasculine folx having to teach our health care providers about our bodies, HRT, detransitioning (bc you can’t be on T if you’re pregnant), basic do’s and dont’s, etc. all while being sensationalized as a “pregnant man”.

• RJ is medical staff assuming you want an abortion since you’re transmasc.

And that’s all I got so far. Please add more. And I like the word ‘folx’.

I'm not sure what the other mods are up to, but I'd just like to apologize for myself for being inactive for months. I was busy etc but I still posted on my main. That is to say, I'm going to try posting here on a regular basis again. :) -emma

North Dakota and Arkansas passed similar bills that were later struck down as incompatible with Roe v. Wade; the Supreme Court declined to hear any appeals, sending the signal that an Ohio law would meet the same fate. But Ohio’s conservative lawmakers see an opening after Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election last month.

fun fact there's actually no way to know for sure the percentage of trans people! considering the amount who are in the closet or simply don't know they're trans. and the numbers are estimated to be up to even 5% soemtimes - either way there are millions of trans people, definitely not as small as 100,000 in the US, there are Way more of us than that in the US

(anon about the percentage) I hope that didn't come across as aggressive!!

it didn’t don’t worry! and yeah definitely, especially with varying definitions of the word, people lying for their safety, etc. and even using the minimum 0.3% number comes out to 21 million globally...

reproductive rights doesn't mean only about pregnancy. forced sterilization is also an issue of reproductive rights and one that heavily affects trans women, so saying that reproductive rights wouldn't include trans women is wrong (the last paragraph sounded like you were saying that reproductive rights would only affect people who can be pregnant)

you’re definitely right! i misspoke and i apologize.

@houmouscat i’m not saying we shouldn’t care about reproductive rights. after all, i do co-run a blog devoted to pro-choice politics...

i’m simply asking people to replace the word “women” with “pregnant people” when discussing reproductive rights. this makes these discussions more inclusive and safer for trans people - who, by the way, compose an estimated 0.3% of the US population, which is about 100,000 people in the US alone.

however, if i can change my language slightly to make one person feel safer and more included, that’s worth it to me. if hundreds of thousands of people doesn’t make it worth it for you, so be it. i’m not going to force you to say one thing over another, but i would hope you won’t infringe on /my/ right to ask people to use more inclusive language.

Is it okay to call myself pro choice although I'm strongly against abortion myself (mostly for religious/moral reasons - I am Catholic haha) I would never try to force my beliefs on others and when the time comes that my country holds a referendum, I like to think I'll be voting yes to legalise abortion because I think all women should have a choice.

Avatar

you’ll probably get different answers if you ask different people, but i would say that yes it’s ok.

being pro choice isn’t about your personal decision to have an abortion or not. after all, not everyone will even get the chance to make this decision in their lifetime. i’ve never been in that position, but i don’t hesitate to call myself pro-choice.

being pro-choice is about the right to choose, which it seems like you support. so there you go!

also, this isn’t exactly relevant but please don’t use the word women when talking about reproductive rights. it’s not inclusive of all the people who may have abortions or otherwise directly be affected be reproductive rights, as most trans men and some non-binary and agender people can be pregnant, while some women - like trans women, some intersex women, and some cis women with certain medical conditions - can’t be pregnant.

- emma

edit: an anon pointed out to me that it sounds like i'm saying trans women aren't affected by reproductive rights issues, which isn't true! reproductive rights covers more than just abortion, it's also things like forced sterilization, which affects trans women far too much. i apolgize and i'm going to be more careful about my language in the future.

I am a 13-year-old lower middle class Mexican girl, and I'm pro-life. I'm pro-life because my mom almost had an abortion. I would never have had a chance at life.Tell me, why is a baby magically a "real baby" once they're born? What's the difference between their location and size at one point vs another? The child CAN feel pain at 20 weeks, so think about that when you pay someone to rip off their limbs, inject them with poison, or shred them. Why do you want to murder babies? Please, explain.

A fetus is not, as you called it, a “real baby” once they’re born because before that they aren’t a “real baby” nor a “fake baby” nor any kind of baby. It’s a fetus. Don’t ignore that, don’t ignore basic science that has been reiterated by the pro-choice community time and time again.

Why do you want to force people to give up one of their organs?

It’s bodily autonomy, it’s so simple. Google it, search our blog, search any pro-choice/abortion blog. I am not obligated to do anything with my body.

How to deal with protesters as you walk to the clinic....

As an escort, these are things I WISH we had time to tell clients as they walk to the clinic.

  • Protesters don’t have any concept of personal space or the word “NO”.  However, that doesn’t mean it is pointless to say it.  The protesters need to hear “GO AWAY” and “LEAVE ME ALONE, STOP FOLLOWING ME” repeatedly and LOUDLY (I’ll talk about why this is important later).  As clinic escorts, we don’t have the ability to block or run into protesters, that would be assault.  Protesters will try to make you stop walking, slow you down, get in your way.  ANYTHING to impede your progress.  My advice is to KEEP WALKING at YOUR OWN PACE. YOU set the pace.
  • Don’t hesitate to film protesters.  Film yourself saying go away, leave me alone, stop following me.  Film the protesters stepping in front of you and trying to slow you down.  If a protester touches you, film that too.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask an escort (if available) questions.  You can grab my arm or get behind me and hold onto my shoulders.  It is WHATEVER you want to do.
  • YOU DON’T HAVE TO WALK WITH A CLINIC ESCORT.  We are there ONLY IF YOU WANT US! :)  Your consent and wishes are what we want to strive for.  If an escort approaches you (typically we will have an orange or pink vest that says CLINIC ESCORT on it), we will ask “Would you like us to walk with you?“  You DO NOT have to say yes.  Unlike the protesters, if you say “No Thanks!” we will let you be ;)
  • If you feel harassed or violated once you get inside the clinic, you have EVERY RIGHT to file a non-emergency report.  I would start with your local police department.  Also call the FBI and the Department of Justice.  The fact that a report of harassment is on record is what is important.  The more reports of harassment the police have on file from clients, the more likely police will come out and watch and reprimand protesters. If you would like to report a specific protesters, just ask an escort.  We typically know their names, just as they know ours.
  • Protesters can make you feel powerless and angry.  This is a way to take your power back and report harassment.

If you have any questions, I would call your local clinic.  Also you can ask me!

Hugging 101!

This is so important! Children need to learn that if they are uncomfortable touching/being touched by certain ppl (adults) they do not have to. It helps the child to understand that they are under no obligation to have physical contact with ppl just because they are adults. This could keep a child from being abused, or incentive them to speak up if they have already been.
