TINY BLONDE FIGURE SITS  on a red vinyl seat , legs that don’t reach the ground swinging back and forth as she awaits the arrival of her long awaited ice cream cone.  jesse had been lucky enough to get to spend the day with her aunt mary , the person she looked up most to in the world alongside amanda.  from the moment jesse met mary , she’d been drawn to her warmth and kind heart , both of which had enveloped the tiny blonde in so much love that it lessened the sadness of having to leave behind her family and friends in new york.  brown , doe like eyes look up from the table at the sound of mary’s voice , before the eight-year-old’s eyebrows crease inwards.  ❝  what kind of place just … runs out of strawberry cheesecake?  ❞  jesse throws her hands up dramatically , before letting out an equally theatrical sigh.  ❝  what kind of person would i be if i passed up ice cream?  ❞  graciously taking the cone , jesse takes a lick before she opens up her hello kitty coin purse , takes out a quarter , and slides it across the table.  ❝  a quarter for your troubles!  ❞

THANK GOODNESS, HER LIFE HAS BEEN SAVED.    she had no idea what she would have done, had the young girl passed up the cone.   honestly, she probably would have eaten it herself, but her hips wouldn’t have thanked her for it in the long run.    a soft chuckle is released when she sees the girl’s reaction   &    can’t help but smirk at the hello kitty coin purse.    ❝   guess it’s my lucky day.    ❞    quickly, she slid into the booth with her own cone.   she’d chosen french vanilla.   it was basic, but it was still her favorite flavor after all these years.   brushing some hair back, she adjusted the strap on her overalls before she raised a brow at the little girl across from her.    ❝    so, how are you liking riverdale   ?    bet it’s different from big city life, huh   ?    ❞    granted, new york wasn’t that far away.   it was just a hop, skip    &   a jump, but that didn’t mean that the adjustment was any easier.    ❝    you miss your friends back in new york   ?    ❞

she didn’t have many friends.    but, it’d always been that way.   mary was a social butterfly, but not everyone appreciated her patterns.   she was a rare person, so much sun radiating off of her that people were often blinded.   but, amanda hadn’t been.   the two had become fast friends   &   she was more than thrilled to know that amanda also had children.   well, one.   jesse.   man oh man was that little girl a blast.   &   thankfully, today was one of the days in which she’d enlisted mary to babysit.    it didn’t bother her one bit, considering archie was practically grown up     out of the house.   besides, she’d never had a daughter.   who knew girl time could be so much fun when you borrowed someone else’s kid   ?     ❝    okay, don’t shoot the messenger, but they didn’t have strawberry cheesecake.   so i got rocky road instead.    ❞   eyeing her for a serious moment, she held out the cone.     ❝    quick.   life or death.   you wanna take the risk   ?    ❞

months ago, mary had been so close or, rather, that was what she told herself.   she was good at singing, but she didn’t deem herself the next dolly parton by any means.   besides, record labels wanted FRESH FACES.   not faces that could promote wrinkle cream.   she wasn’t that old, but in the eyes of the industry  ?   she was ancient.   still, she was content to live out her dreams through her son, as any good parent would.   she was more than thrilled when he’d started his own band of redheads.    of course, archie was the star.   her son always shined.    gladys’ comment had her mouth opening wide.   was she pulling her leg  ?   they weren’t teenagers anymore.   it was easy to get lost in a daydream   &   forget that you were halfway to death.   but, sunny dispositions aside, mary couldn’t help herself.   her best friend had intrigued her.     ❝    a gig, you say  ?    ❞    smirking, raising a brow, she nudged her shoulder.     ❝    how many milkshakes   &   fries do i have to buy you from pop’s in order to make this a    -----    thing  ?    ❞

maybe it was hard for her.    maybe it was hard to differentiate between the people who truly cared    &   the people who only saw dollar signs.   but, you’d think after over two decades of knowing one another, hermione would be able to know which category mary fell into.   their entire lives, all they’d done was try to help one another.   she’d even taken her side when her   &   alice had their falling out.    why on earth would she think she would pity her      ❝    then those people don’t really know you.    ❞    sitting down beside her, she stuffed her hands into her jacket before turning to face the woman.     ❝    where’s this coming from   ?   you know i don’t pity you.   c’mon, talk to me.   i’ve been told i’m a pretty good listener.    ❞    she nudged her shoulder, eyes attentive to anything she might share with her.

mary was thankful  not only for jughead, but for the fact that now that southside high had been shut down, he was back at riverdale.   no, she hadn’t seen him    &   archie together as much    -----------     &    to be honest, it had her worried.    still, she felt it her duty to check up on him.   knocking on the trailer door, she cleared her throat before putting on a bright smile.    poor woman.   her kindness would soon be the death of her.
