OFMD + disability

(note: I did not include injuries that could potentially cause disabilities such as Roach’s shoulder because it’s not shown that there’s any clear lasting issues. Also, I included Black Pete because even though it’s never acknowledged in the show, I think it’s important to note that his actor, Matthew Maher has talked about his cleft lip and palate and said about the scar and his speech impediment: “I always think of it as a challenge—an impediment/challenge to my acting career…If you have anything that sort of makes you aggressively different than everybody else, you have to sort of wrestle with it. I had speech therapy. Part of committing to being an actor was finding a good speech therapist to make me just a little bit more comprehensible. But even still, she didn’t eliminate the lisp and there’s still the scars. It’s been one of the biggest things that’s slowed me down, but it’s also been paradoxically the thing that distinguished me the most.” So even though it’s not addressed in canon, the fact that it isn’t and he’s able to just be as he is on screen is so nice to see.

Gotta admit that I was super excited to find out that Lucius and I both lost part of the exact same finger! 😂 Fortunately, I've got enough left not to need a wooden one.

Relationships: Mycroft Holmes & Greg Lestrade, Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade

Characters: Mycroft Holmes, Greg Lestrade, Mrs. Hudson, Mummy Holmes

Additional Tags: Kid Mycroft, kid Greg, World War II, Operation Pied Piper, Don’t copy to another site

Summary:

Schoolboy Greg is evacuated from London during Operation Pied Piper and goes to live in the country with the Holmes family who have a son very nearly Greg’s age, but completely unlike him in every other way imaginable. It’s a hard time for Britain but maybe one small portion of the countryside can host the birth of a beautiful friendship. Or, at least, a tolerably pleasant association that can be endured with a proper stiff upper lip…

Framing Parallels !!

While on my second rewatch, I noticed that the way that the rowing of dinghies is framed is the same in the first episode. Obviously this makes sense because it is the same torment done to Stede as a child onto the soldier as revenge/retribution.

It is a centered shot with the rope clearly visible in both. The characters are trapped in this situation and have nothing to do but row. The shot gives you little else to focus on because of the sweeping movement of the oars.

Now this framing is used later with Ed rowing away from the dock in Episode 9. The only difference is the lack of rope, but as this framing has been used before to show a trapped character, it shows that Ed is also trapped metaphorically.

He is brought back from his fantasy of running away with Stede and forced to become the mask of Blackbeard again.

What is even more poignant is that when this cinematic language is used to show being confined, in the final scene, Stede (on a dinghy) is framed differently. He is finally free. He is not being forced to row. He is choosing to follow his heart against the expectations of society at the time.

ETSY STRIKE INFO

I know it’s not my normal content but I’ve shared things about my Etsy shop on here before so I wanted to post about the Etsy strike going on from April 11-18.

We are striking because Etsy has continued to increase fees for shop owners and are increasing their transaction fee from 5% to 6.5%. Myself and many of my fellow shop owners are using Etsy as a primary source of income and this increase would mean we would make even less than we already do.

On top of transaction fees etsy takes .20 per listing posted, .20 to auto-renew a listing (which happens every three months or so), and a payment fee of 3% + .25 per sale.

We are making more demands of Etsy like ending the star seller program, cracking down on resellers, and removing roadblocks between shop owners and their earnings (including their infamously shitty shop support system). Please do more research on your own and educate yourself about the demands and issues in this matter.

I will be participating and putting my shop in vacation mode and we ask that you don’t purchase from Etsy during that time.

Obviously not everyone will be able to participate in the strike but we ask that you support those striking and not purchase on Etsy during those days. If you would like to buy from an Etsy seller during that time contact them directly.

Give your money to artists not corporations.

Capitalism is an illness we desperately need to cure.

Since I know a lot of dice buyers and sellers do so via Etsy, I felt this was important to share

the look on ed’s face though … like, he’s simultaneously thinking that *surely* something will happen to end this nonsense because this simply C A N N O T be happening, mixed with sheer panic at stede’s impending execution, and then the desperate, creeping realization of what he has to do to stop it … his forehead scrunches up and his eyes go wide as he understands that he’s got to give up his own life (as a pirate, as THE greatest pirate of them all) to save stede from certain death … and it takes only a split second after that realization dawns for ed to open his mouth and scream their plea for grace … and then place himself squarely between stede and the firing squad, arms spread protectively to shield his beloved from the english rifles … god i hate this show

ALL THE FEELS
