The hour-long drive seemed to pass in the blink of an eye with conversation flowing easily between the attending and his intern. They had reached their destination, the Boston Medical Library, situated on the University of Massachusetts campus.
“Thanks again for coming and helping me with this research. I’m sure you had better things to do this weekend,” Ethan said, parking and turning off the engine.

Cassie Valentine learned the art of flirting from watching her parents. It seemed to come naturally to them, much to Cassie’s delight and Max’s dismay. Although, given her twin’s flirting game, Cassie knew the lessons from their youthful observation had stuck.
It wasn’t just the words (although she soon learned they were a powerful tool in the game of flirting). It was also about the body language — a coquettish look in one’s eyes, the subtle vocal intonation, a flick of the hair, and a half-tilt of the lips so the object of your desire knew the secret, sultry smile was just for them.
Cassie knew the love of her life was forever amused by her flirtatiousness, which made her even more determined to tease him. The fact that he often had to ask if she was doing it was endlessly amusing to her.

Growing up in New England meant ice skating. One of Ethan Ramsey’s earliest memories was holding his father’s hand as they stepped onto an outdoor ice rink. Light snow fell around them like stardust, and he tilted his head back to catch a snowflake on his tongue.
His father taught him how to skate that night, gripping Ethan’s hand lightly and encouraging him to lean forward and alternately stroke and glide on the ice, letting the blades do the work.
Ethan remembered his father’s deep laughter and his mother’s cheers from the sidelines as he let go of the hand keeping him tethered. The summer sun was high in the sky, its sharp rays shining through the treated glass ceiling. Where the city streets battled sweltering temperatures, the hospital atrium was a cool and bright hub of activity. Patients, visitors, nurses and doctors glided around each other like actors on a stage.
From his vantage point on the seventh-floor gallery, Ethan Ramsey watched the familiar scene unfold below. There was a time when he’d stand at the windows of his old office and gaze down at the emergency drop-off area. Sometimes, it was the only time he had to himself in the day to just think.
There was a simplicity to his life he missed now that he was chief of medicine. He missed working with patients most of all, solving the puzzle of what brought them to the hospital, that moment when a diagnosis just clicked.
Now, it was all over, he sighed morosely, tightly gripping the edge of the steel handrail. And he wished he could go back and do it all over again.
