Developing Local Cultus: A Companion Library

In preparation for the revamping of my Local Cultus series over on wordpress, I have begun to gather this small reference library for anyone who may be interested. Containing mostly works which inspired me to set out on the path of developing a localized religious practice, as well as some of my research materials. For those interested in the series, and the topic which it covers, I absolutely recommend giving these titles a flip through.

The first of this series, an introduction and mapping out of what is to come, will be up on the Barn Cultus website by the end of July.

Do others find it harder to spell-cast for themselves than it is to spell-cast for others? And if so, why do you think this is?

I'm curious to know what peoples' thoughts are on this—especially those of you who are so gifted when it comes to explaining/theorizing about magical matters.

I've always suspected it's because magic in my tradition is meant to be treated as a service, and so culturally I feel more inclined to 'cringe' at magic which I cast for personal gain. My heart is less in it.

I find my best work around has been cultivating spirit relationships which fulfill the roles of magic I could cast for my gain. Giving opari and communing with spirits willing to bring needed wealth and blessings is far more comfortable for me and is more fulfilling for me, personally.

Don't get me wrong, I still partake in some magic for myself now and again, but depending on the context it's by far my most unreliable results.

Where do you/did you study ?

Unfortunately, due to the nature of this website, this is the kind of personal information I will not be sharing.

However, if it's an area of study which interests you there are a few compelling programs here in the states. I recommend beginning your search amongst seminaries and humanities focused schools which offer "build your major" tracks. If you're a grad student there's a lot more opportunities for specialized research, with USC opening an Occult Sciences major just a few years ago, and several folklore focused anthropology tracks.

I hope this is somewhat helpful, dear, and I hope you understand why I am unable to answer your original question.

Today an Abenaki scholar in my field came to my college to speak. Beyond being a prolific anthropologist, this woman comes from a sister tribe of my father's ancestry. When I spoke to her she asked about this heritage, and upon my explanation touched my shoulder and told me in a gentle voice that I was a lost bird, beginning to find my way home.

I was so taken aback by this earnest showing of kinship, and with her immediately pointing out several quirks of mine I've always considered "Vermonter" things, as Abenaki customs. She was so patient with my questions and curiosity, and offered more resources than I currently know how to parse.

I went home and cried, and prayed to my faceless ancestors whose indigenous names I do not know. I am aglow in awe of the Dead and Living in the Dawn lands I call home.

Since reconnecting more with the Abenaki side of my father's family, my passion for tattooing has taken on a new lens. My own tattoos, pacts to the land and stars where my soul abides, become a further extension of previous traditions of tattooing as a way to denote ones place in their tribe. While my context has changed, it is a connection I hold very tenderly in my heart.

Below are a depiction of an Algonquin woman covered in tattoos, and an image containing some of my own.

The serpent headed rosary center of my upcoming project dedicated to the lunar dragon was crafted while the moon passed through the degree of Sualocin, and applied in positive relation to her sister-sphere of Venus.

This project has been so incredibly spirit led, and I have never made anything like it before. Each bead a talisman to the Sun-Devourer, Witch-Initiator, Flame of the New Moon.

Would my followers on this platform be interested in reading my academic work? As I've mentioned I study anthropology of religion, and while oftentimes the research of these projects get included into the barn Cultus articles I write, I also realize there's so much I'm forced to exclude for the sake of coherence.

Was playing The Long Dark and had a glitch where a flare shot embedded in the eye of a bear. I then had a hissing, flaming bear chasing me through the woods, which was spooky af.
