If your tummy itches when you wear jeans, you have a nickel allergy and should paint the back of the buttion with nail polish. Okay I am going into the woods forever now. I love you.

WHAT

Sensitivity to nickel is extremely common amd despite this, clothing manufacturers often use it because it is cheap. A coat or two of nail polish is an effective barrier between the allergen and your skin. Goodbye forever. Do not forget my wisdom

did you have a similar issue with goncharov that you had with the fourth person pronoun? if not, then what's the difference between the two kinds of misinformation?

Avatar

the fourth person pronoun thing is people being confidently wrong about my exact area of expertise. the goncharov thing was people joking about a fake movie

Avatar

you all need to understand like. the degree to which the "chat is a fourth person pronoun" thing is wrong is just, so embarrassing. and if it was something where it was clear everyone is joking like it was with goncharov (from the perspective of me only seeing posts about it that people I follow reblogged anyway. if you saw worse posts about it that were actively spreading misinformation idk follow better blogs) then maybe it could have been funny, but I saw it reblogged so many times in good faith without commentary. and people just saying "ooh neat", fully accepting this Extremely Wrong Post as fact without questioning it

it's less comparable to goncharov and moreso to like, those posts about how a bunch of idioms are actually the "short versions" of older "true" idioms and almost all of the full versions have no source and were made up in like the 2010s. (@indigosfindings has a really good video on the subject!) it's just kinda irresponsible to present misinformation as a Fun Fact no matter how inconsequential the misinformation is

okay for those who missed the post I made on main about this a while back here's just a quick summary of the main ways in which "chat is a fourth person pronoun (because it refers to a hypothetical but non-existent person beyond the fourth wall)" does not make sense as a thing to say:

  1. the way live streamers and kids imitating them use "chat" is, straightforwardly and unambiguously, as a noun. calling this use case a "pronoun" is a misunderstanding of what a pronoun is, how exactly the word "chat" is being used, or both.
  2. while the term "fourth person" is used for analyzing some languages, in english grammar the idea of a fourth grammatical person is absolute nonsense. there is no hypothetical meaning that "fourth person" could have for english that wouldn't be better described as something else.
  3. even if "chat" was being used as a pronoun, the people it's referring to aren't hypothetical. streamers using "chat" to talk to and about their audience are referring to real people. this only makes sense as a thing to say when talking about the very niche case of people in real life pretending to be talking to/about a chat that isn't actually there, which brings me to:
  4. even when "chat" is being used to refer to a hypothetical audience that doesn't actually exist, that doesn't make it a different grammatical concept from referring to a person that actually is there. grammar doesn't care if you're talking about real people or not.
  5. none of this has literally anything to do with "breaking the fourth wall". breaking the fourth wall is a more complicated concept than just "talking to the audience". it means drawing attention to the fictional nature of a performance, which doesn't make sense as a concept when something isn't a work of fiction.
  6. but like if you do think of "breaking the fourth wall" as just meaning "talking to the audience" (fine) then talking to the audience is a literal textbook example of what "second person" means.

What a wonderful, evocative, REAL sculpture. It really brings home how these were living thing, flesh and blood, not immortal. Fellow earthlings.

Another thing that helps, if you're lucky enough to live by a clean beach, is walking barefoot on sand. It's like a randomised combination of all the exercises in the video with how the sand shifts as you move.
