LOOOVE this question, thank you! Both of us took this on 50/50! c:
Ushijima: The obvious choice for him is volleyball; he’s probably been contacted by representatives from different colleges and he’ll likely attend one that offers the best in terms of his sport. When faced with the question of what he’ll be majoring in alongside this, he knows immediately that he wants to study Horticulture. He’d like to play volleyball professionally and for as long as his body will allow him beyond that, but he recognizes, with the help of advisors, the fact that he’ll need something to fall back on. Plants have always really interested him and for as long as he can remember, he’s had a vast knowledge of different types and what it takes to help them grow. The idea of (someday in the far future) owning a corner flower shop in the city makes him feel something akin to holding a volleyball in his hand, and that’s how he knows it’s what he wants to pursue.
Jin: Deciding to take his love for people further, Jin decides to be a teacher. He’s always loved kids and he loves the connections that he can make with them, especially in such a setting as a schoolroom where he can serve as a mentor to them. Jin is an obvious choice for a role like this because he is so kind and smart and really devoted to helping others shine. He quickly earns the status of the favorite teacher, being the one who loves his students unconditionally and is willing to put every ounce of himself into helping them all succeed in their own ways.
Semi: Even though Semi’s outfit choices have been the target of Tendou’s relentless teasing for a while now, he truly does have a passion for clothing. His taste has always been niche and alternative, and he often finds that instead of buying clothes from certain stores, he’ll patch together random things he finds at secondhand stores until he’s created something he really loves. Because of this and his desire to create what he wants to see in the world, he’s interested in pursuing fashion design. He knows that the career path is extremely cutthroat and competitive and he’s more than ready to handle that. He believes that his vision is unique, however, he also has a huge interest in makeup and hair styling and keeps those paths in his mind as backups in case things don’t work out.
Reon: Unable and unwilling to escape his love of volleyball but also knowing that he’s less interested in pursuing the professional side of the sport, Reon is presented with a difficult choice. He can either put everything he has into trying to go professional, or he can choose to move towards coaching. In the end, his love of mentoring and encouraging people helps him make this decision very quickly. His dream is to coach a junior high team full time, but he would settle with elementary if necessary (he loves kids, after all). As soon as he starts his college education, he returns to Shiratorizawa every so often to take place as assistant coach to both the junior high and high school teams, which only helps cement his love of the career path he’s chosen.
Tendou: He struggles a lot when it comes to deciding what he should pursue as a career, probably more than most of his teammates. In his perfect world, he’d be able to spend his life doing the things he finds the most fun: watching anime, reading manga, playing video games, exploring the city, etc. But Tendou isn’t blind to the fact that life doesn’t work that way, and he needs to find something he’s passionate enough about to turn into a career. After a lot of internal struggle and the classic debate of fun vs. practicality, he lands on art, the perfect mix of both. He’s always had fun creating things, and he knows that he can channel his love of anime and manga into this. He chooses a private art school, ends up bonding with like-minded individuals, and dreams of one day creating his very own manga series.
Goshiki: Still smitten with sports, Goshiki would love to continue to play volleyball after high school. He certainly has the talent and ability to be an all-star player. However, he finds new fascination in the world of sports medicine and physical therapy. Knowing how hard it is to be an athlete, he wants to do everything in his power to help others overcome challenges caused by injury. He still plays, of course, but more recreationally now because he loves the feeling of using his sports background to help other athletes and it’s something he finds easy to put all of his dedication into.
Shirabu: After high school, Shirabu pursues a career in journalism, landing a job with a current events magazine. He enjoys the way he can use language to construct very specific meanings with his words and likes the mental challenge of writing to inform a broader audience. Rhetorical strategy and different appeal techniques have always felt to him like a really complex puzzle of finding the right words to convey the meaning he wants to the target demographic so there are few activities that he finds so mentally stimulating and satisfying as journalism. He often tag teams with photojournalists and writes usually about world events, politics and other exigent, day-to-day life aspects.
Kawanishi: One of his biggest interests and hobbies outside of volleyball has always been discovering and listening to music. He owns a vast collection of records, indie music magazines, and one of the biggest itunes libraries any of his teammates have ever seen. When he can, he enjoys attending small concerts for artists he either isn’t familiar with or has a huge love for. Music is the one thing in his life that he feels he can make a real career out of. He chooses to pursue journalism, with a huge focus on music-related events. His dream is to one day write a music review column for any of his favorite indie music magazines.
Yamagata: Working a part time job after graduation revealed a lot to Yamagata about his future. He originally didn’t know what he wanted to pursue because he has so many ideas for what he could do, but none of them seem right. So until he decided, he got a job in a restaurant and fell in love with food culture. That opened the door for him to pursue a career as a chef and he strives to run the best restaurant possible with high quality, delicious food that he’s proud to serve to a growing number of frequent customers.
