Why Feedback Matters

As of recent months, there’s been a disturbingly high trend of people not giving feedback to writers, especially within the context of fanfiction; writers are suddenly expected to put out multiple fics in a short time period, for little to no thanks, appreciation, or feedback. As a fanfic author myself, I have to admit, I haven’t been getting any - feedback is so scarce that I am always shocked when people leave a comment/reply/reblog saying anything from “hey, this was so good!” to “Holy shit I loved x, y, z about this”, or even a keyboard smash. Writers shouldn’t be shocked to get feedback.

Now, feedback matters for a lot of reasons, some of which also apply to artists, but this is about writers (artists, of course, deserve the exact same amount of feedback and recognition and appreciation).

The first and foremost reason is, well, because feedback keeps writers motivated; it lets them know that they’re loved and that they’re appreciated, which means, of course, they’ll keep writing.

Secondly, feedback matters because it tells writers what their readers enjoy and like, it gives them a chance to get to know their audience a little bit more.

Third reason, writers don’t get paid, for all their hard work, most writers don’t see a penny for what they put out and post; writers don’t have to post their work, they don’t have to share it, but they do, and they do it for FREE. So, surely, a “wow, this was really good!” Is deserving, right?

But people don’t seem to see it that way, anymore; people seem to see writers as machines that are expected to give and give and give, for nothing. Not a thank you, not an anon ask telling them that their writing is appreciated, not a reblog with an attached comment. Nothing. Writers are expected to act like machines. But, we’re not, we’re people, we have jobs and school/college/university, family, friends, responsibilities to see to, and yet, we still sit down for hours to write and share it with the world - for nothing. Is it any wonder that fandoms’ writers are dying out? Is it any wonder that writers are losing their love for their craft? When you feel so unappreciated and unwanted, it’s hard to find a reason to do something you love(d) - it’s hard to share something you put blood, sweat, tears, time, and soul into when you feel as if no one wants it. But why do writers feel that way?

Writers feel that way because no one reblogs their writing and leaves a little bit of feedback, all people do is ‘like’, and move on - this means that writers are stuck, not knowing if people actually want them to continue writing or to give up, as there’s no comment saying “keep up the good work!” or “Thank you for writing this!”. Writers feel that way because no one bothers to give them feedback.

So, with that in mind, what should you, the reader, do? There’s only one answer: give writers feedback!! Whether it’s a keyboard smash, a mess of emojis, an anon ask - TELL WRITERS HOW MUCH YOU ENJOY THEIR WORK!!!!
