I headcanon the reason Gale is so prickly about people calling Tara a "cat" or his "pet" is mostly because she was his only friend growing up and kids teased/bullied him about it.

"She is not my cat or my pet! She is a tressym and her own person!" (Who chose him to be her friend. Not out of a need for shelter or food or because she wants something from him but because she likes him.)

Anyway, I diagnose Gale with outcast loner child and having no close (human) friends growing up or they probably just let him hang out with them just for his magic.

I'm sorry the contrast between those two scenes is sending me, the anime is very serious about this friendship thing, meanwhile the light novel is just "yeah"
