Chapter Six

Damian

Damian hated how out of control he felt - not only had his father and Pannyworth had to talk some sense into him, Jason had gotten involved. He was acting less rationally than the most emotional member of his family. In any other circumstance, Damian would have felt completely ashamed. Instead, he was simply mindlessly worried.

To his great shame, it hadn’t been long ago that Damian had contemplated the power that Marinette seemed to have over him. He lost his head whenever she was involved, and it seemed to be getting worse lately. He couldn’t quite put his finger on why that might be. A small part of him (the part that sounded frighteningly like Mother) had wondered if it would be better if Damian cut ties with Marinette. He’d dismissed the thought quickly because even considering a life without Marinette felt too painful, even then. Now that it was a reality, he could confirm that it was, in fact, hell to be without her.

He gripped the handle of his katana so tightly that his knuckles turned white. Tim and Babs were hard at work gathering information about the current hideout his mother and grandfather were using - the landscape, the layout of the compound, how many people they likely had as backup… Damian knew it was a wise move, but he needed to act, to rip someone limb from limb.

I’d divorce him too lmao

It’s never JUST about the tomatoes.

Basically!

Throughout the day, partners would make requests for connection, what Gottman calls “bids.” For example, say that the husband is a bird enthusiast and notices a goldfinch fly across the yard. He might say to his wife, “Look at that beautiful bird outside!” He’s not just commenting on the bird here: He’s requesting a response from his wife—a sign of interest or support—hoping they’ll connect, however momentarily, over the bird.

The wife now has a choice. She can respond by either “turning toward” or “turning away” from her husband, as Gottman puts it. Though the bird-bid might seem minor and silly, it can actually reveal a lot about the health of the relationship. The husband thought the bird was important enough to bring it up in conversation and the question is whether his wife recognizes and respects that.

These bidding interactions had profound effects on marital well-being. Couples who had divorced after a six-year follow-up had “turn-toward bids” 33 percent of the time. Only three in 10 of their bids for emotional connection were met with intimacy. The couples who were still together after six years had “turn-toward bids” 87 percent of the time. Nine times out of 10, they were meeting their partner’s emotional needs.

Damn, this made me think of all the “shouting into the void” social media posts everyone makes. Just bids for connection. From ANYONE.

I think that is ABSOLUTELY what a lot of that is. Our culture is very isolated (even BEFORE covid!), and we’re desperate to connect with others. I read an article one time that suggested that childcare workers stop saying that a child is “Just wants attention” and start saying that the child is “looking for connection.” We’re starved for it even from childhood.

When they are speaking about a passion, respond to children as if you would a tenured professor at a prestigious university, and to an adult as if you would a child free of the burdens of adulthood.

Children are desperate to teach the wonders of the world that they know, that they have just learned, and share it with anyone interested.  Adults pour passion they didn’t know they had into voluntary obligations, and crave a simple acknowledgment of that passion as being worthy and valid.

“Dear third grader, tell me exactly why you chose <x> as you third favorite carnivorous dinosaur instead of second, as specifically as possible.”

“Hey neighbor, your vegetable garden is absolutely gorgeous this year…and no I’m not just saying that because the tomatoes you gave me last year were absolute perfection.”

i want people (writers) to stop describing jason as the angry sibling, and start using the description that damian gave him

But you? You’re the most… emotional.

because it is correct, jason is very emotional, and I want writers to start writing him like that in other comics that are not his solo ones, instead of just writing him like the angry “I hate my dad” one

Abled Person: Hey man, can you hold this wad of $2,000 and this one penny for me while I open my wallet?

Disabled Person: YOU COMPLETE AND UTTER FOOL!

The United States Government:

(Watch how many people don’t get this.)

In order for disabled people to receive any sort of financial assistant for their housing, food, bills, medical supplies, etc., they cannot ever have more than $2,000 of resources to their name. Ever.

It doesn’t matter what it’s for.

You’re saving up for a new wheelchair?

For college?

To put a downpayment on a house?

Hell man, you just happen to budget for once in your life so that you can have some extra money in case something bad happens?

Your benefits immediately get cut off if you’re a cent over $2,000.

And, even worse, you usually end up having to pay back every dollar the government gave you that month.

So say you get $400. If they find out you’re twenty dollars over the resource limit, you have to give them all $400 back and you undergo an investigation of your funds to see if you will continue getting money.

“What if I spend the money that day?”

Doesn’t matter. In fact, from what I can tell, people who do this are actually put under investigation for fraud.

And yes, this system literally kills people.

Remember when “Guardians of the Galaxy” came out? one of Rocket Racoon’s creators, Bill Mantlo, suffered an accident in 1992 and has irreparable brain damage.

before the movie came out, Marvel gave him an exclusive preview screening. SOme people were upset because they felt if Marvel was really wanted to thank mantlo, they should have donated money to Mantlo’s family.

Bill Mantlo’s brother had to come out and explain: If Marvel gave them monetary aid, Bill Mantlo would lose his financial assistance.

That’s so utterly depressing.

My brother has been on California State SSI for autism for the last 10 years, and he absolutely has to (no joke, HAS TO) spend all 720 bucks of his SSI every month, because if he puts it in the bank he risks losing his SSI altogether.

Sometimes, at the end of the month, he has no idea what to do with his money because the whole month went by and he still has 400-ish bucks in his account, and he fucking panics because he doesn’t want to get anywhere near 2,000.

And here’s the funnest part of the story!

One day he did a huge commission on Second Life and wound up earning 1500 bucks off of it, and he told the guy to donate it 500 bucks at a time over 3 months. The guy didn’t want to, and just donated all 1500, which put my brother at 2,036 bucks.

The state IMMEDIATELY (I’m talking less than an hour) called him up to tell him over the phone that they were canceling his SSI, because they noticed he had gone over the 2,000 buck threshold. He had to tell them that someone had made a charitable donation to him and that this was not a common occurrence in any way shape or form, and upon not believing him, my mother had to call to talk to them as his legal caretaker and say basically the same thing until they called off the cancellation of his SSI money.

He also had to cancel his renter’s assistance because it put him to 1,062 a month, so if he went 30 days without spending any money they’d cancel his SSI altogether. Like, none of us in the family have any fucking clue why that regulation is in place and it’s the stupidest shit in human history.

Please, legal side of Tumblr, tell me what positive reasoning this law has?

Happy 4th of July everyone! This is what the “nation of opportunity” looks like.

There’s something called an ABLE account that can help. If you are on SSI and were diagnosed as disabled before the age of 26 you can apply for an ABLE account that will allow you to save up to $99,000. More people need to know about this!

thank you so much for this information. i’m applying for an abled account right now

THERES A WHAT

OH GOD BLESS THE SHIT OUTTA YOU YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW FREAKED OUT OVER THIS I WAS

I’ve been looking into SSI; I had no idea about this!

Reblog to literally save a disabled person’s life

This is so important.

Even if your state doesn’t have an ABLE account program, you can sign up for an account with any other state’s program! Eligibility is NOT restricted to the state you’re in, at all.

Finding You (Again) Chapter 5

Marinette

Marinette felt absolutely wretched. Everything ached from spending too much time in a single position, but there wasn’t much else to do. It was a pretty small cell with just enough space to stand and take two steps in any direction. She slept on a concrete floor and counted each meal as it came. She had no idea if they came at regular intervals or not, but she’d recently begun experiencing a new form of wretchedness. She had only been able to keep a bit of bread down out of the last four meals - a part of her wondered if she was slowly being poisoned. It wasn’t a great tactic for keeping a hostage, but if it was slow enough then Talia’s timeframe for her death would be enforced one way or another.

The time between meals was long enough that Marinette was ravenous by the time her next one came. Naturally her chronic puking hadn’t helped matters.

The underling that brought the food this time was heartbreakingly young with a disdainful scowl on her face. “If he was raised by the Mistress then your husband should have found you by now. He’s had more than enough time.

Marinette said nothing and stayed perfectly still. That seemed to irritate most of her visitors enough that they left more quickly and she could then eat in peace.

This affected the girl even more than most. The tray hit the ground with a sharp bang, just barely within Marinette’s reach. “I hope he doesn’t come for you. The Al Ghul blood can’t be tainted by someone as weak as you.”

Against her better judgement, Marinette raised her eyes to the girl’s face. “He’s also a Wayne, and I’m more than enough for them.”

The girl kicked at the bars of the cell, seemingly irked when Marinette didn’t flinch at all. “It just goes to show what poor taste the Waynes have.”

The exchange should have bothered Marinette, but the girl’s comment stuck with her in retrospect. If they were surprised that Damian hadn’t saved her yet, then she had probably been here for at least a week…

Marinette hadn’t thought much of it when she’d missed her period last month - she’d felt a little off and figured it was something hormonal. She’d told herself that she’d go see a doctor if she still seemed to be having issues.

But now… the nausea on top of missing her second period in a row made things glaringly obvious. Leaning against a nearby wall, Marinette tried to calm her turbulent mind.

Placing a trembling hand on her stomach, tears slipped down her cheeks. She couldn’t feel a difference - in the logical portion of her mind she knew her baby was too small to be felt yet.

Her baby. Allowing herself to think the words almost broke Marinette. Along with that, however, brought a number of questions to her mind, many of which were questions she’d been actively avoiding.

Was Damian worrying about her? Was he looking for her? What would he think when he found out she was pregnant? Did he want to be a dad? It was something they’d discussed, but it had always seemed to be a tense subject for him, so she’d never really pushed the matter.

Despite all of the anxieties that she had been plagued with, Marinette refused to believe that Damian would reject her child. He wouldn’t, right? But they had fought the last time she’d seen him, and there was still no sign of -

No. She couldn’t let this eat away at her. Taking a deep breath, she looked into Tikki’s eyes. “I need to escape from here.”

“Marinette, I’m sure Damian will come, we just need to give him time.”

“No, Tikki, I need to get out. Talia can’t know she’s going to be a grandmother.”

Finding You (Again)

Chapter Four

Damian

After the first three days, Damian didn’t go home again. Every time he walked in and she wasn’t there felt like he was being stabbed, so he just stopped going. He still had the security system synced with his phone, and he couldn’t stop himself from checking it immediately whenever it gave any sort of update.

Instead, Damian sulked around Wayne Manor, doing anything he could contrive to stop thinking about Marinette. He trained a lot - in fact, training took up the bulk of his time, leaving him to systematically rip various training dummies limb from limb. After a week of this, he felt…  feral. His family gave him a healthy amount of space, as evidenced by the fifteen foot radius they were giving him as they watched him dispatch yet another dummy, this time with his katana.

When the practice dummy had been sufficiently reduced to scraps, he breathed deeply. Irked by the feeling of being scrutinized, he growled, “I can tell you all have something to say. What is it?”

They all traded glances before Babs finally said, “We’re worried about you, Damian.”

“Shocking,” Damian said, punctuating the work with a sharp kick to the dismembered dummy laying on the ground.

“Little D, you’re not okay,” Dick said from where he was perched. “You haven’t been this moody and angry since you were a teenager.”

Before Damian could give an appropriately caustic reply, Jason spoke up. “Come on, Dick, let’s stop pussyfooting around the issue. You screwed up, Demon Spawn, and while you’re throwing a temper tantrum we haven’t heard from Marinette.”

Hurt and anger flared in Damian’s chest, and the bottled up emotions from every day Marinette didn’t return broke free in the form of a wild punch thrown at his older brother’s face. It was a crazed, desperate punch that Jason caught without difficulty. Using the grip on Damian’s hand, Jason hauled him forward. “Listen here, you little -”

“Let him go, Master Jason,” Alfred said, inserting himself between the two. “The situation will not be improved with violence, as Master Damian has demonstrated with these dummies.”

“Thank you, Alfred,” Damian said, sharply pulling his hand away from Jason. “Now you can all kindly stay out of my marriage.”

“With all due respect, Master Damian, we have been staying out of your marriage, but we have some serious concerns that you will listen to.”

“I don’t know where Marinette is, so you can all save your breath,” Damian spat.

“We don’t know where she is either,” Babs said seriously. “We didn’t want to overstep our bounds, but Marinette hasn’t picked up her phone since she left, we found it being sold in a back alley.”

Finding You (Again)

Chapter Three

Marinette

Marinette bounced in and out of consciousness, but nothing about consciousness made her want to lengthen her stay. Wherever she was it was dark, and everything around her rattled and shook, the constant drone of an engine too oppressive for Marinette to even form a thought. She was tied up, and her muscles screamed from the unnatural position she was in, but she couldn’t do anything but fall into yet another fit of dreamless sleep.

She was awake when the engine finally stopped, giving her hazy mind enough room to decide that it was probably safer to pretend she was still asleep. It sounded like there were only two men, and metal screeched on metal when they opened the door to whatever they were holding her in. They spoke in a language Marinette couldn’t even identify at the moment, and then rough, meaty hands yanked her away, slinging her over a shoulder.

Taking a risk, Marinette barely opened a single eye, taking in where she was. The angle was atrocious, Marinette couldn’t see anything. The ground was concrete, and with a sinking heart she could identify the landing gear of a plane - she knew nothing aside from the fact that she was probably incredibly far from home.

Reaching up slowly, Marinette gently touched her earrings. They were still there, which meant that even if Tikki weren’t there right then, she would find Marinette one way or another.

Finding You (Again)

Chapter Two

Damian

He hadn’t actually meant to say those things to Marinette. When Dick had burst in carrying her, his mind had gone to all of the worst case scenarios. How could he live with himself if Marinette was seriously hurt, or even worse, killed? She was too gentle, too precious to be sacrificed for Gotham’s sake.

Of course, he couldn’t bring himself to express any of that. Damian was angry, angry at what could have happened to his wife, and angry at his wife for putting herself into the situation in the first place. A part of him wanted to cave, to apologize for his poisonous words, but he was stubborn. (Luckily Marinette wasn’t an easy crier, or he would have buckled right then and there.)

So he watched her march out, his fact fixed into one of passive disapproval until she was far gone. Even then, it took a few minutes before anyone felt like they could talk.

“That was not handled well, Demon Spawn,” Todd said, finally breaking the silence.

“As you are the last person I would ever ask for marriage advice, remind me to never listen to anything you say, Todd.”

Finding Each Other (Again)

Chapter One

“Make way guys, out of the way!” Dick bellowed from the entrance of the batcave. “Alfred, we need you!”

Marinette, jostled in his arms with every step, tried to liberate herself from her brother-in-law’s iron grip. “Calm down, I’m fine.”

“No offense bug, but I just watched you get crushed by a steel beam. Alfred is checking you over.”

“Tikki, spots,” Marinette said, as he deposited her on a cot. “See, not a bruise on me. I only jumped in to save that kid because I knew I would be fine. I’ve been eaten by a t-rex before, I was perfectly safe.”

“You what?” Damian demanded darkly.

“Dames! How was your patrol?” Marinette asked, grinning at the sight of her husband.

“What just happened to you on patrol?” Damian demanded.

“Dick is overreacting. I know it can be kind of… unsettling to see things like that, but the Miraculous suits are nearly indestructible. Only another Miraculous or some type of magic could hurt me while I’m suited up.”

She leaned in to kiss Damian’s cheek, but his face was stone.
