Here’s what’s happening in Australia at the moment.

For some context:  Mallacoota is a tourist town, usual population is a little over 1000, but at peak tourist times, it can be as high as 8000. There was an estimated 4000 there today, when the extreme heat, peaking at 49C/120F, combined with high winds, to spark a large, intense fire in the bushland around the area. This pretty much blocked off all ways out of the town, leading to all 4000 people being evacuated to the beach, with the emergency plan basically being “If the fire comes this way, get in the water” Thankfully, the wind did change direction, and as far as I’ve heard, most of the town was spared, but this is how bad the drought, heat, and fire situations have become in australia. And our government still refuses to make solid policies on climate change.

Languages are inherently political, it’s reality.

Think of how peoples speaking “creoles” refer to what is in almost all cases distinct, separate languages as “broken [insert colonial language of origin]”—that’s political. That’s a residual belief of colonialism. The idea of the existence of “creoles” as an exceptional category itself is political and again, a vestigial belief originating in the politics of colonial social and linguistic hierarchies.

Think of when speakers have a negative attitude toward their own language because of social hierarchies that traverse past ethnic boundaries and enter into the realm of language. That’s political.

Referring to distinct languages as dialects of a national language because of their relatedness is political.

To assume languages are devoid of politics is to assume that all languages are just there for dubbing Disney songs and dramas. You can have fun with languages, but you cannot ignore sociolinguistic realities. It’s ignorant to do so.

Grow the fuck up. Existing, for many of us, is a political statement.

Disney in fact banned certain languages from dubbing their films. For example my language, Catalan.

In the 1980s, when the fascist dictatorship that banned our language and forced Spanish on us ended with the death of the dictator Franco, Catalonia was given a (very) reduced regional self-government which tried to give vitality back to our language after so many decades (since 1939) of illegalization and persecution.

One of the proposals was to dub Disney films to Catalan, so that children could grow up hearing their language. Even though the Catalan government promised to pay for all the dubbing and distributing expenses, Disney still said no. Disney would literally not lose any money, and they would take all the benefits. And yet the bosses of Disney Spain still refused.

Disney only accepted after the campaign known as “Pocasoltes”. When Pocahontas was about to be released and Disney once again refused to translate it, Catalan people felt this was the ultimate insult. Being a film about Native American people, we as an occupied territory felt connected to that story. It seemed ironic that they would make a film about a Native American princess and then refuse to translate it to indigenous languages around the world. So people protested a lot, boycotted Disney, even literally squatted to occupy the Disney store in Barcelona, among other actions.

Disney then accepted to let us dub their films to our language, but even then they refused to distribute them. To the point that I didn’t even know that most of them had been translated at all! Growing up I could only watch them in Spanish.

And I won’t even go into explaining how damaging it is for children to grow up in a world were princesses and heroes only speak the invader’s language. When I was a child and played with my friends, we switched the language to Spanish because the thought of someone important or someone we admired speaking our language was ridiculous. I have many friends who, even now being adults, don’t want to listen to any music or watch any film in Catalan because they say that “those things are supposed to be in Spanish or English”, and being in Catalan makes them “tacky”.

So yeah, not even dubbing Disney is apolitical.
