the work book club i joined is reading dune this month. i feel like i need to read it & attend bc i already skipped the last two months for being a very breasts-forward graphic novel and then priory of the orange tree neither of which i could get past the tenth page of

but also like. so many people have read dune already. i don't think i need to be added to their number.

last night i had an incredibly vivid dream which was essentially, uh, an anti-rationalist-fiction spitefic of which i was acting as the protagonist? like it was extremely vividly and clearly laid out exactly which tendencies of rationalist fiction my dream was objecting to and i still remember the whole thing in enough detail that i could in fact write it out as an actual story therefore making it anti-rationalist-fiction fiction in real life

except that i can't figure out why the fuck i would possibly bother to do that

#like i do hate the four pieces of fiction it was in opposition to #it's just that.... like this is not a major tendency in fiction #it's one guy and his like two most adjacent friends who are maybe also him #even other rationalists mostly write things that are less stupid on the axis i was criticizing #why can't i remember my elaborate dream narratives that are about other things. that i think are important at all.#box opener #dreambox #''actually‚ it's BAD to have a couple of characters xanatos gambit everything offscreen in a way that makes it impossible for #any other character to have personal qualities or any external struggle to seem particularly meaningful'' < like. yeah. i think we know.

i wish regency era romance novels weren’t all about rich upper class people. less romancing a random duke and more romancing the hot rousseauist guy who holds seditious gatherings in his home in sheffield. there should be a romance novel about the london corresponding society

#technically this kind of almost exists in kj charles's work but all the ones doing it are just terrible #just no good whatsoever #kj charles has some fun books but the ''oh uh what about the rebellious lower classes???? maybe theyre sexy?'' ones are. not among them.

one of life's special consuming yet pointless games is encountering a tumblr user/substack youve never seen before and trying to figure out if it's secretly one of p3yton th0mxs's writing buddies from that knockoff of the toast they ran for a year, or if it's an unrelated person with the same habit of repeating danny lavery bits about 30 rock as broadly known fact who just also loves lists of kind of gayish 90s movies and what we might call "plausible deniability public-facing rpf"

#fortunately there would be no moral ramifications if anyone were in this social group regardless #because while i find these people annoying the majority of them haven't like. done anything wrong.#besides pt himself whose misdeeds are extensive and variegated but nowadays mostly seem to just involve writing broadly reviled #pitchfork reviews & poorly supported twitter threads about louisa may alcott #box opener #it's like studying convergent evolution.

Fun fact: You can fit a barn owl inside a Quaker oats container.

Some of their tail and wings will stick out a bit but the whole rest of the bird fits inside ao this is a sound method to use when banding youngsters who are near fledging (and thus adult sized).

#now admittedly i've spent effectively no time in rural illinois but i have in michigan and wisconsin #and i gotta tell you. those people are also regular to hostile. normal style behavior and interactions #cannot begin to figure out what collective hallucination everyone from outside the region has developed to convince themselves #of their intrinsic superiority due to uniquely hating greetings or whatever #box opener #if you're from the midwest and also sincerely think there's a politeness difference. uh. let me know.#if you're from fucking new york or whatever you're perfectly capable of having convinced yourself of this out of sheer perversity #and i am not interested in hearing from you at this time.

went to the arboretum with 🌸 yesterday because it’s Lilac Weekend and i have to say. lot of lilacs there

#also a lot of rhododendrons everywhere except their specialized rhododendron garden #which contained almost no blooming rhododendrons #perplexing onlookers.#my working theory is the rhododendron garden is purposefully timed to be at its peak after the lilacs are mostly done #but i don’t know anything about plants. so who’s to say #box opener #still a categorically worse arboretum than the umich one but it sucks much less in spring than like. late july.

received very emphatic positive feedback from my advisor about my most recent presentation to the lab, continue to find this bewildering, definitely will not extrapolate from this in a way that allows me to stop fantasizing about dismembering myself for the two weeks before every presentation

#also of course this prompted her to immediately have a very enthusiastic and emphatic new idea #which was for once just ''hey maybe [labmate] should work on some of this with you'' and not ''let's try this insane new fifth thing''#which would be fine and great except she proposed that to him about a *different* person's project already a month ago #and nobody's followed up yet #so i think she just keeps having great ideas for side projects for him based on whoever's research she heard about last.#oh well.#box opener #it would PROBABLY be worse if i expected things to go well and they didn't. at the beginning of my phd i kind of thought things might #go well! then everything went so badly in like two weeks that i spent the next five months in a shambling coma of horror #and now i like to. anticipate the horror.
