Summary:  Melody Danes gets the break of a lifetime when as a lowly intern, she’s assigned to write a profile piece on Captain America.  Steve Rogers is a hard man not to fall for and as she and Melody get closer and Melody’s career takes off, jealousy leads to sabotage, and the potential to bring her whole world crashing down.

Chapter 19

There were two months of what Melody could only describe as pure bliss.  Work was exciting and fulfilling.  She was loving her home life.  She was getting more time to have a life outside of paying bills and was making time for hanging out with friends and starting new hobbies.  She’d been going out on group dates with her, Steve, Bucky, Bobbi, Matthew, and Sam.  They were quickly becoming a new family group and she hoped they all worked out because she’d hate to lose those dinners.  Best of all, things between her and Steve were calm and it felt like they’d reached some new milestone in the relationship that she couldn’t quite name.  It was more domestic and yet felt deeper.  They had started to talk about their futures more.  It wasn’t intentional sit-down and talks about getting married and having kids and what religion they planned to raise them.  It was more that they casually dropped those things into other conversations like they were inevitable.  Steve had mentioned wanting to take her to Europe sometime.  She had said something about what they’d kids would look like.  They’d both casually mentioned parts of town they’d like to move to together.

This is a stupid conversation! and I'm not going to continue it! literally so fucking correct

What I’m really proud of is the fact that he made SURE the audience understood why the caller was being an idiot. He made a PERFECT comparison, gave the caller an honest chance to re-evaluate and change his mind. His point landed, everyone knew it, even the caller (note his pause and almost hesitancy after being asked).

But when the caller decided to bulldoze on anyway, because god forbid actually listen to the other person in the conversation, the expert cut him off and refused his time. And good for him.

Caller: --because we work very hard about staying fit, eating healthy, and our natural immune system.

Hartmann: So Nicholas if you're so healthy, would you have unprotected sex with somebody who has syphilis or gonorrhea?

Caller: You're missing the point.

Hartmann: No, I'm not missing the point. They're contagious diseases. Would you have unprotected sex with somebody who has syphilis and gonorrhea and not worry about it because you're so healthy?

Caller: [pause] No, I wouldn't do that.

Hartmann: Okay, then why would you expose yourself to covid without having some protection?

Caller: Because the protection is my natural immunity.

Hartmann: No, it's not. Tell that--

Caller: Yes, yes, my natural immune system--

Hartmann: Tell that to eight hundred thousand dead Americans. Nicholas, this is- this is a stupid conversation and I'm not going to continue it.

Chapter Twenty-Five: Heart Felt Truths

Chapter Twenty-Four / Masterlist

There was a soft patter of feet across the old creaky floor and a giggle at the end of the bed. Curtis knew it was coming, had warned you that Sophia would probably crawl in with you both first thing in the morning. He let his gaze slit open to see her at the foot of the bed, grabbing onto the blankets to pull herself up. 

The room was still gray, the hues of dawn barely coming, not quite arriving fully yet and of course, his niece was wide awake right now. He was going to need coffee, coffee would require more work than usual with the power out. 

Maybe if he waited long enough Ella or Lisa would make coffee, that sounded like a better plan. 

Next to him, you stirred, lifting your head enough to see what was moving at the end of the bed, before you burrowed back into your pillows, making Curtis snort softly in amusement. You weren’t a morning person, not unless you had to be. 

OMG THIS IS THE MOST PERFECT AND SWEETEST THING!! I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!!!!

Everyone knows Captain America.  He’s on the news regularly.  There are comic books and action figures based on the man.  Less is known about Steve Rogers.  The centurion who became the first-ever Super Soldier is often tight-lipped about his personal life.  He opened up to DB and what we found was not what we expected.

There you are. Bucky exhales deeply, a week’s worth of tension lifting from his shoulders at the sight of your hair peeking out over the top of the comforter. The bedroom is barely illuminated by the glow of the TV screen, silent reruns flickering light against the wall and across the you-shaped lump on the bed. He steps over the threshold quietly and kicks off his boots, his heart pounding as a different type of tension builds in him.

Bucky closes his eyes and takes another deep breath. He’d only been gone for a week, he tries to remind himself. Only a week, and considering exactly how many weeks he’s suffered through in his overextended life, the time away should feel like a drop in the bucket. He shouldn’t even notice it. But Bucky’s got it bad, and any hour spent away from you feels like years.

He swears it’s been centuries since he last felt your touch. 

Something about this line-

'It’s the first time he’s allowed himself to play with it all week'

...makes me chuckle every time. I miss these two!!

Melody was buzzing when she got home.  The preliminary interview with Captain Steve Rogers had gone so well, and she currently felt this swirling mixture of excitement, relief, pride, and euphoria inside her.  It left her feeling slightly high, and her hands trembled every time she tried to use them.  Now, she wanted nothing more than to metaphorically vomit out everything that had happened to her cousin.

You hummed, happy with your little quiet bubble in the schools library. The kids were headed home at the end of the day and you had planned on taking the last bit of afternoon to jump start your next science course for your students . 

Curtis already knew you would be late getting out having told him as he was headed out the door for work. So you were soaking in the sensation of being around all these books, getting lost in the endless shelves available to you. Endless book spines were calling your name with titles, some familiar, some not. Once in a while, you would pull one out, cracking it open to browse its contents. Like an old friend greeting you once again.
